Romero captured it again.
Trying to hold onto the wrist this time so he can't get it out.
Ten seconds left.
Oh, this would be a huge win for this freshman.
Randolph, three seconds.
Wow.
like they said, cool, calm and collected, true freshman.
Very impressive win against a very high level.
okay.
Watch that reversal here, how he jumps his hips back over.
Didn't happen that time.
Watch what happens here.
He back arched into him, high-level arch and gets a reversal.
Wow.
>> Somebody wants to see defending the legs.
Wow.
What an example there.
Big win by the freshman.
>> That wasn't the first time he's done that.
>> Matt Randolph with the win.
The score Augsburg 12-0 after four matches.
We're ready for 157 pounds Karsen Otis for Augsburg going up against Blain Christie.
The last time these two met, Karsen Otis beat Christie by major decision in the national duel, 12-1.
>> Christie did not have a good showing.
He's way better than that.
He's got a chance to win this match.
Really Wartburg needs him to win this match, because we go into break 5-0.
Dude, no one in the country would have predicted that.
So I think this is a really big chance for Christie to step up.
Coach Keller loves this kid, says he does everything right, trains hard.
But Karsen Otis, dude, he looked great a couple weeks ago.
But it was 0-0 in the first.
So if someone can get a first-period takedown -- >> Blain Christie, 17- 4, out of Kankakee, Illinois, bishop McNamara high school.
Was a qualifier, got third in the Illinois states.
He's a senior.
>> You get third in Illinois states, you can wrestling.
>> Karsen Otis, 17-4, ranked number four.
He's a sophomore out of Wisconsin.
>> And one note on Karsen Otis, he beat out two all Americans to be here tonight, to be in the line-up.
>> Yep.
>> Crazy.
>> He is opposite of Matt Randolph, although Matt Randolph just showed us what he can do.
But he is 4-2 in his last six matches, five of them against ranked wrestlers.
>> Wow.
>> It's a breakout year for Karsen Otis.
>> Really has been, very impressive.
Nice snap by Otis.
He is kind of the Iowa-style wrestler, in there banging, snapping.
Kind of interesting that Augsburg coach calls it Iowa style.
>> Yeah.
>> But he's a straightforward bang fight, just try to out-fight somebody, straightforward.
Christie is good on his feet, has good shots.
>> interesting weekend.
Tonight we've got one versus two in division III.
Tomorrow, it's one versus two, division II and then number one Penn State hosts Iowa.
Wow.
24 hours, divisions one, two and three.
>> There's a stall call on Christie on the edge of the mat.
No score, 40 seconds left, first period.
Otis digging in some underhooks.
15 seconds.
see if someone can sneak something in here.
Christie needs to circle in.
Good job.
0- 0, first period.
Otis goes down.
>> Karsen Otis with the choice.
caution on the bottom man.
There you get the free caution.
I always think, hey, why not?
Take the caution.
>> As long as you don't get three of them.
>> Yeah.
Get the first one.
Go get that first one.
>> Otis up to his feet.
Christie trying to knock him back down.
Otis looks like he squares out, gets the point escape.
>> Otis goes out 1-0 now.
as I said last time they met, three weeks ago, it was a 12-1 decision.
>> It was.
It was the second period where Otis got a takedown and got some near fall.
You know they've worked on that in the Wartburg room.
>> again, underhooks going to the side, you know, keeping Wartburg's backside to the edge there, not a good look.
>> For sure.
Christie does circle in, but he's back against the edge again.
If Otis would take a shot -- good scrap here.
Here's a shot by Otis.
>> Good job of working back in by Christie.
>> yeah.
Wartburg coaches want him to lower his level and take a shot.
nice snap again by Otis.
two on one.
Christie gets in a front headlock.
Got to bring him to the mat, do something with it.
nothing going.
20 seconds left, second period.
clock winding down, second period, three seconds.
>> We're going to go to the third period 1-0.
Christie will have the opportunity.
I think he's going to choose neutral.
>> Going to choose neutral.
>> Three-point takedown.
You got to get out.
You get a takedown anyway, give yourself more time.
>> He felt his best opportunity is on his feet.
>> going to have to clear those head and arms there, lower the level a little bit.
>> two-on-one by Otis.
>> this is when you got to start mixing it up.
>> Chris tie hasn't got to the legs, hasn't really taken many shots.
>> Get into the wrestling position and figure it out.
>> Otis, that underhook is really bothering Christie, really takes a lot away from him.
There's a chance.
Took a shot.
He has to.
>> Keep pushing.
>> Yeah, he has to.
He's doing what he needs to do here.
Christie digging in that underhook.
Clock's on Christie's side, really, getting down to one minute left.
>> Christie's got to, you know, tap, go, whatever.
You just got to get yourself --there you go!
This is it.
>> Otis trying to go around, picks up his ankle.
Christie does get his leg underneath.
Otis brings him back.
Christie has a chance here.
>> That's what the doctor ordered there, Jimbo.
Come out and scramble, got the crowd behind him.
21 seconds.
big, big takedown for Christie.
>> Huge.
21 seconds.
>> this is what you do, one, not two.
>> Here you go.
He's got the leg in.
That's a good spot for Christie.
Trying to somersault off.
No way.
>> What a big, big win!
From 12-1 loss to a 3-1 win for Blain Christie.
Wartburg on the board.
>> that was big.
>> big turnaround at 157.
>> Here's where Otis tried to step over, but Christie caught the leg, scores.
here's another look at it.
Christie catches both legs, ends up in a takedown.
That's the winning points.
Wednesday Went from behind 1-0 to win 3-1. okay.
Coach, how are we doing?
Just like anything, at this meet, you never know what's going to happen.
How did you feel about the first half?
>> I think we controlled the pace really well.
This crowd is an impact on this match.
I thought we did a great job of taking it out of them early with our pace.
They got into that last one.
But really excited about the first half.
>> What's the message at halftime?
>> Stick to our plan.
The first minute of the match is the most important.
We've got to wrestle the way we've wrestled all year long.
>> Thank you, coach.
>> Thank you.
>> Okay.
Our score after five matches, 12-3.
We'll be right back with highlights.
You're watching college wrestling on Iowa PBS.
>>> We're back at intermission.
Augsburg leads Wartburg 12-0.
I'm here with Brady KYNER.
Now the head coach of the women's team.
Great to have you with us.
First of all, this rivalry.
You've nope it.
It's incredible, isn't it?
>> It's amazing, man.
This is one of the duels I look forward to every year.
>> Well, you just had your women's team out here.
Everybody is appreciative of that.
What a growth right now in America, fastest growing sport in the world right now, college women's wrestling.
>> It's so amazing.
Now the 91st sport in NCAA wrestling.
We're excited to have the opportunity for our women to have that spotlight as well.
>> There's a national championship, like you said, but next year 2026 there will be an NCAA official championship for women's wrestling.
That's so cool.
>> So cool.
>> So you guys use the same facilities.
You have different practice times.
This facility here must be a great way to recruit your women wrestlers.
>> It makes it easy.
We have the best facility in the series.
We're lucky to have the facilities and the support.
>> Well, you've got them off to a great start, ranked number ten in the country right now.
That's great.
We really appreciate you being with us.
It's a great atmosphere to have a former all American here.
Brady, thanks for the conversation.
>> Thank you.
Appreciate it.
>> We'll be back for highlights of the first half before the second half begins.
You're watching college wrestling on Iowa PBS.
G G. >>> Let's look at some highlights.
>> Okay.
We are we go.
Reshot by Suddeth.
Really nice job.
Two takedowns ends up turning that match around.
Nice takedown.
A comeback by Gabbert.
Just came back three takedowns in a row.
Here's the reversal.
Randolph --this might be the back arch.
>> Yeah.
>> It's the back arch for a reversal.
This was high-level stuff.
>> Here are the results from the first half.
We start out at 125, Kaczrowski defeats Birchman, same as last time.
But then Suddeth defeated Gervey.
Then Gabbert defeated Thongseng and Randolph beat the freshman Romero.
Big win for Christie defeating Otis 3-1.
Makes it 12-3 as Augsburg come back to the mat.
We're getting ready for the second half.
Man, I tell you some of the stuff I saw, the talent, some high-level skill.
>> Now we're in a situation where Augsburg, they know they can't let up here.
They're favored in the last three matches.
They got to steal one.
Here we go.
>> who's this other guy?
>> Look at that dude.
Look at that bad dude right there.
Looking sweet.
>> Still have red hair.
That's back about 30 years.
>> Augsburg got the same warmups almost.
>> I get so excited.
Goosebumps are back.
Here's coach Keller.
Here's the team.
Coach eller knows he's got a big hill to climb.
>> He's planning on doing it, not hoping to do it.
This first match, if you're Augsburg, you got the guy you want, Willis, your veteran.
>> You're watching college wrestling on Iowa PBS.
>>> Aidan en Brosinski!
>> Cooper Willis from Kansasville, Wisconsin.
He gets right into that underhook.
Aiden Brosinski, 10-4, sophomore.
>> Underhook by Brosinski.
Oh, man, he's really trying to force a stall call.
Maybe good idea.
>> Nice job keeping square.
>> Willis really has to work hard to circle in.
Big match coming out of the break.
Well, they're all big matches from here on out.
Every one has been, actually.
>> Cooper Willis has had three straight Battle of the 'Burgs with bonus point wins.
>> Oh wow.
>> So going back two years, plus the national duels.
>> I think last year in the dual meet at Augsburg, he had a fall.
There's nice shot by Brosinski.
Willis trying to step over and lock up.
He does lock over.
Willis does have his hands locked.
He had a cradle.
Nice job by Willis, kind of turning the tables right there.
No score yet.
There's maybe three there.
>> good scramble, good effort.
And the AUGGIE comes out on top.
>> He's really tough on top.
>> ying to get Brosinski on his belly.
>> You've got to keep yourself in the game.
>> Brosinski doing a good job keeping his base.
close to the edge of the mat.
Willis coming up on a one minute riding time.
13 seconds left.
Willis 1:03 riding time buildup.
>> 1:15 riding time.
Here's the takedown.
Does behind after a big scramble by both guys.
>> Cooper Willis has a choice.
Took down.
Brosinski goes on top, trailing 3-0.
>> Willis up to the tripod, gets to his feet.
Nice switch action there.
You don't see a standing switch too much anymore.
Now he's trying to pull his hips over top, kind of like Randolph did.
Nothing yet.
Randolph trying to lock up.
There Willis lifts up.
Nothing yet.
Looking for reversal.
It's close.
There it is.
>> Gets the two- point reversal.
>> He's got a bottom leg hooked up.
He's working to try to get under the chin.
he turned him.
The last time they wrestled here in this scenario, but this time Brosinski has his arm -- oh, there he breaks it off.
He gets out of it.
>> Good effort by Brosinski there to fend off what could have been disastrous for him.
>> 5- 0.
Willis building up riding time.
Has Brosinski broke all the way down, has an arm bar dug in.
Back points would be huge here.
He knows it.
there's the stall call, stalling on the bottom man.
Good call.
>> About as long as you could wait right there.
>> Brosinski has to build up.
Willis, really a lot of pressure.
>> So much weight at the front.
He's got the body to do it.
You're out there on your toes.
>> Brosinski does kind of get up, gives himself a chance.
Time running down.
Five seconds left.
There it is.
>> they're going to choose neutral, I would think.
Yeah.
>> Brosinski chooses neutral.
5-0 is the score.
Willis does have riding time.
>> Boy, you know, you were talking about when you and coach SWINson --this is where Brosinski needs to know I got to fight with everything I've got.
>> You cannot give up the major.
Every point counts.
You know, this meet so far is played out just like --I remember so many Wartburg/Augsburg meets.
One thing you know is you don't know what's going to happen.
>> The one thing I knew for sure is I knew for sure I won't know for sure.
That's one of your great quotes.
>> You look at that, already in the first half we had two matches turn around.
Here we go.
Brosinski doing a good job fighting off Willis.
Willis needs a takedown.
>> This is the match within the match, Jim.
>> Yeah.
shot by Willis gets him upside down.
Brosinski goes for the leg.
Willis is good here.
He's dangerous here.
If he can break that leg -- there it is.
He's got a leg Turk.
There's the points.
He wants to try to turn him there.
Wants to get his hand under the chin.
There, Brosinski did a good job getting back to his base.
But it's 8- 0, plus riding time.
>> It's 9-0.
A reversal is what needs to happen here.
An escape won't be enough to keep from getting the major.
This would be the first bonus point victory of the night.
It's a big one.
>> You know Augsburg felt good FBT about Willis going out.
He's one of their leaders.
Momentum is a big deal.
9-0.
>> Four points more on the board for Augsburg.
16-3 after six matches.
cooler Cooper Willis, a two-time all American gets the first bonus point victory for the UGGIES.
They travel well from Augsburg.
>> Always do.
You just want to see great wrestling.
There's nothing like being here.
>> we're ready for 174.
Seth Goetzinger is 15-3.
>> Wartburg rolling the dice here.
Nathan Fuller is moving up to 174 from 165.
He's very capable.
Seth Goetzinger, he's 15-3, actually a two-time all American.
>> Nathan Fuller, 10-1 out of river falls, Wisconsin.
>> Good job by Fuller fighting that off.
>> Fuller started at the university of Minnesota.
>> Oh wow, nice shot, straight double by Goetzinger.
Man, that just exploded.
>> Goetzinger gets a quick three points.
>> 3-1, Goetzinger.
another shot by Goetzinger.
He's pulling the trigger early here.
>> Nice low shot there.
>> Fuller trying to capture his wrist, but Goetzinger trying to get to his feet with the leg.
He does.
Almost gets a takedown.
Not yet.
no.
Oh wow.
Fuller, great job fending that off on the edge.
>> Goetzinger out of chatfield, Minnesota, was a three-time placer, second in his senior year, won the state championship.
He gets in on that leg.
He has kind of an unorthodox -- >> Yeah, you can't relax.
Fuller doing a good job here, front headlock.
Goetzinger holding onto that arm pretty tight, hoping for a stalemate.
Fuller wants to score here, has an ankle.
Goetzinger back to his feet.
Fuller with a headlock.
1:30 left in the first.
>> Tim Johnson along with legendary coach Jim miller bringing you number one Augsburg versus Wartburg.
Great action all night long.
>> Good scramble there.
Both guys, good scramble.
>> One minute left in the first period.
>> Two-on-one by Fuller.
nice job by Goetzinger.
Good try.
Fuller squares up.
Here we are 40 seconds left in the first.
3- 1 Goetzinger.
Had a real quick shot early in the match.
Besides that, it's been dead even.
>> And he had a couple other close ones.
Talk about someone weathering the storm, maybe that's the place Fuller is in right now.
>> Good scramble.
Had double underhooks, tried to push him off the mat, maybe get a stall call there.
Goetzinger took a shot.
>> Right now you're in a position, you're just one takedown away from taking the lead.
You don't want to do anything crazy here.
>> Nice shot by Goetzinger.
13 seconds left.
>> You can't give this up.
>> Nice job.
There is the takedown.
Good strategy here.
>> We've seen Augsburg wrestlers do takedowns at the end of the period.
>> Very savvy.
single.
Picks it up.
Nice trip.
Has to put him down.
There he does.
Nice takedown, second takedown of the period by Goetzinger.
Goetzinger goes down, ahead 6-1. looking to tripod up.
Fuller throws a leg in.
>> Fuller up from 165.
He weighed in at 165, wrestling at 174.
>> Now 7-1.
Oh wow.
Goetzinger gets him in trouble.
Takedown here.
No back points yet.
No back points yet.
Oh, he does step over.
There's some back points.
Fuller's in trouble here.
Goetzinger stepped over.
Now count him on his back.
Has a four- point near fall waiting.
Looking for a fall.
>> And the arm is trapped.
He's not going to get it out.
>> Fuller trying to get off the mat.
>> A huge fall.
>> wow.
Seth Goetzinger shows out, gets a fall second period, puts his team up 22-3.
>> what a way to come back.
two wins in the second half.
The coach was a three-time division III all American at Augsburg as well, just happened to wrestler at 149 in 2012, the last year Iowa Public Television, now Iowa PBS aired college wrestling before returning this year.
>> Tony walked off the mat like no big deal.
You don't see him get too excited either way.
Here we go.
Kasey Ross against Brandt Bombard, 15-3 junior.
And Ross won the match a couple weeks ago, but it was only 2-0.
>> Augsburg coming out here and stunning Wartburg with six out of the first seven matches going their way.
>> what a way to start the week.
Jason Bryant, great P.A.
announcer and all-around outlet for wrestling information.
He let me know earlier today that we have one versus two tonight.
And then tomorrow we have one versus two in division II, university of Wisconsin parkside versus number one St.
Cloud state.
And then, of course, Iowa traveling to state college to take on the number- one ranked Nittany lions from Penn State.
>> What three great matches.
I'm glad we're kicking it off for everybody.
>> Yeah.
It certainly hasn't disappointed from a standpoint of the action, the atmosphere.
>> Energy.
You got a full house.
Got the blackout.
and we're not done yet.
1:20 left in the first, not much happening.
No one's got to the legs or anything.
Ross kind of two-on-one.
Bombard stands square right in front of him, looking for an underhook.
I mean, as the match played out last time, Bombard really needs a takedown, because Ross rode him out the whole second period.
And he really didn't get close to getting out.
Ross is good in every position, but on top he's really good.
And Bombard really has made some improvements this year, doing a great job.
15-3. he was behind the national champion last year.
Funny how that works.
>> Yeah.
>> You know, you get behind somebody really good, and the next year you're really and here we go, dead even, 15 seconds left in the first.
>> that's how it'll end, the first period.
Don't miss a minute of today's college wrestling match.
Catch the livestream on IowaPBS.
org, the Facebook page or our YouTube channel.
If you're joining via Facebook or YouTube, tell us where you're watching from in the comments.
And thank you to all of our viewers for tuning in.
>> And here we go.
Brandt Bombard had the choice, deferred.
Ross took down.
He explodes on the whistle.
Bombard wants to try to hold him down.
He wants to get some riding time here.
Now Ross -- oh wow, Ross gets out.
All-out effort to get out, and he did in 14 seconds, almost had a reversal.
These guys are so evenly matched on their feet.
>> Brandt Bombard out of north branch, Minnesota, a four-time state qualifier, second one year.
He's only a junior, ranked number four, 15-3.
Kasey Ross, also a junior, ranked number two, national qualifier out of urbandale, Iowa.
20-1 for the knights.
>> 45 seconds in the second.
1-0 Ross from Wartburg.
Team score, 22-3, Augsburg.
>> You were talking about the national champion that Brandt wrestled behind.
He bonused his way through the entire national tournament.
>> He did.
Very impressive.
Augsburg won the national title.
His bonus points were huge.
>> Bonus points make all the difference at nationals, no matter what level.
>> Here's the choice for Bombard.
It's 1-0, his choice.
Is he going to go neutral?
Yes, he is.
He wants to go neutral.
But there's been no stall calls.
I mean, he's going to have to score a takedown to win the match.
But we've seen that a couple matches ago, 157, Wartburg took neutral and did score with about 15 seconds left in the third.
Ross really tying you up in tight.
Makes it hard to get to his legs.
And Bombard is just kind of tying up both hands.
I'm not sure what he's looking for.
There's his first good attempt.
Wasn't a bad attempt.
>> Don't you think that's exactly right?
Now the real shot that you want.
It's a really good call on your point, Jim, there.
>> Yep, there it is.
That's the follow-up.
Same shot.
Nice job by Ross squaring up.
That was the shot.
>> Yeah.
It wasn't the shot he took first.
It was that second one.
>> He went all out on that second shot and gave himself the best chance.
Ross did a nice job squaring up.
Now he's in front headlock.
Nice shot.
Man, good wrestling.
>> Really good effort there.
>> They're three foot off the mat, and they're still wrestling.
Good stuff, good wrestling, man.
It's 34 seconds left.
>> skirmish on the end.
>> there you go.
Bombard tries to go around.
Just kept scrapping until the whistle blew.
20 seconds left.
Oh, nice.
Oh man, Ross did a nice job coming back to reattack.
Bombard really has an all- out effort here, but just cannot get to Ross.
It's going to end up 1- 0, Kasey Ross for Wartburg.
>> Great fight.
Won't be the last time these guys meet probably.
Kasey Ross gets a much-needed win for the knights.
Gives appreciation to the crowd.
>> Really what that does is wrapped up the dual meet for Augsburg.
>> Yep.
So now it's just, you know, you're wrestling to appreciate the crowd and pride.
It's a disappointing team outcome for Wartburg right now, but now they got the number one versus number two.
Talk about opportunity to see the best in the land.
We got the number one ranked Augsburg against Wartburg.
They've got number-one ranked Massoma Endene.
And number two ranked Parker Venz.
>> Endene the two-time national champion.
The only real close matches he's had has been Parker Venz, and he's had to two of them.
Endene is so explosive on his feet.
Venz has found a way to stay in the match early and try to pull it out at the end.
He did that in the dual meet last year at Augsburg and also at the national duals.
Endene looking to score.
There it is.
Endene makes it look easy.
>> Last time these guys met at the national uals, Venz was ahead.
A big double leg by big MO won the match.
>> MO also made the world team.
That's pretty crazy.
And he made it pretty easy as well.
Made the U-23 world team, wrestled in the all star meet against a division II returning national champ and had a major decision over the D2 national champion.
Obviously he can wrestle high level.
Venz doing a good job.
He knows he can't give up that arm two on one.
MO Endene already has riding time.
1:07 and ticking.
>> Parker Venz's brother Taylor was a committed athlete.
Coach Valek says Parker Venz is really the more athletic.
The Venz out of Farmington, Minnesota.
He was a football star, didn't decide to wrestle until his senior year.
>> He needs to get to his feet.
Mo Endene doing a great job on his feet.
Here he goes.
He's got a good tilt here.
Got a good tilt.
He's getting back got four.
>> Huge, huge back points there.
The Dallas, Texas, native big Mo Endene out of James Bowie high school.
>> Went to Iowa lakes community college.
There's ten seconds left in the first.
>> All right got 2 1/2 minutes of riding time.
>> Here we go.
End of the period.
Great period for Mo Endene.
he's going to defer.
so it goes to Parker Venz, who takes neutral.
There's no getting away here.
Mo Endene obviously good on his feet, lightning quick on his feet.
>> Mo Endene part of the NWCA all star meet earlier this year.
>> Parker Venz takes a shot, goes to his belly, out of position here.
Needs to get back to his base.
I think he's just trying to slow down Mo Endene here on his feet, which is not an easy task.
It's an underhook.
Good spot for him to be in.
Endene out of the underhook.
When Endene starts to lower his level in his fakes, a shot's coming.
there's a go behind.
Parker Venz doing a better job squaring up.
A minute left.
>> number one, Mo Endene versus number two Parker Venz.
Two seniors going at it.
August 22, Wartburg 6.
Augsburg's wrapped up this dual meet, going to take the belt home.
someone son Swinson.
>> Augsburg's going to win this meet.
>> Coach Valek, he's got to feel a little relief here.
This is not easy as a head coach, as you know, Jim.
>> Yeah.
>> Talking to both coaches, they were going to try to enjoy it.
[ Laughter ] >> shot by Parker Venz.
Endene just goes around.
Easy takedown.
Makes it 10- 0, plus riding time.
He's going to have riding time.
He can't erase it.
Parker Venz needs to try to build to his feet.
There he goes.
Nice trip by Endene.
Stall call.
it was a legit stall call.
Parker Venz on his belly.
Here he gets back to his base.
You got to stay on your base and try to work-up.
>> Mo Endene having his way this time.
>> Having his way.
Escape.
Venz 10-1.
There you go.
When you see Mo Endene start to do his fakes there, you know something might be Parker still hanging in there.
Takes a shot.
Endene has him on the edge, but no stall call or.
nice shot by Endene, a single.
Venz does a nice sprawl.
18 seconds left.
Looking like it will probably be a major decision.
>> I was looking at the first all American ever for Wartburg back in 1977.
Steve GEIKE from plainfield.
Became Wartburg's first ever NCAA division III all American.
One of his highlights was coaching in high school, and one of his state champions was this official Jason WedgeBURY.
Dominant performance by Mo Endene, his last Battle of the 'Burgs.
Nice job by that young man.
>> Dominant performance.
Mo Endene single, picks it up, steps over, gets a takedown.
and we're into the last match.
>> Tyler Raway versus Mitchell Williamson.
Right around 220 pounds, from Wyoming, Minnesota, forest lake high school.
He's a three-time placer for Wartburg.
Mitchell women Williamson, undefeated from River Falls, Wisconsin.
>> Last year Raway was 197.
He built his way up into heavyweight, got up to about 220.
