Now, ladies and gentlemen, the introduction for our officials for today's game.
Our referees.
Emily Phillips.
Our second assistant referee, Kimberly Watkins and Rich Voght.
>>> All right, Justin.
Here we go.
Of course, this year a little bit different because of the weather.
It is pleasant outside.
The wind slightly out of the south, partly cloudy, 70 degrees.
Beautiful day for soccer.
>> Yeah, it absolutely is.
It's fantastic.
The whole week has been rather cool and hopefully today no water breaks and nice flow to the game.
It should be really energizing.
>> Here we go, Des Moines Christian and Davenport Assumption.
How these two teams got here, Assumption beat center point Urbana 1-0 in the quarterfinals and then defeated Nevada 2-1 and for Des Moines Christian, a 3-1 win over Van Meter and in the semifinals took care of Underwood.
You know what's at stake, Assumption, perennial champions here.
And Des Moines Christian trying to get their first title.
Against Davenport Assumption, this is going to be quite the battle today.
Assumption wearing black uniforms with red numbers and right away, Assumption on the attacks.
The Lions are going to try to peel it out of there.
And that's something that Assumption will do.
As you saw Gracen Ruggles, throughout the season, they've been so dynamic with one another.
>> You can see from the start, Assumption came off the blocks pressed very, very high.
So you know what this game is going to be about.
But Jade Jackson pressing from the tenth position, attacking midfield with Dorsey and Bella Jennings.
Already you can see, Helgens had to put in a critical tackle.
>> Last year, they lost in the championship to Davenport Assumption.
Their head Coach Dan Webster said, hey, we'll see you again next year and they knew they were going to be very talented.
One of the players they've added is Isabel Garcia.
As you see Davenport Assumption wants to get a breather here.
>> Isabel Garcia, a transfer in.
Great player.
Left and right foot.
She's playing wide on the left-hand side today.
Sami Webster was injured last year with an ACL injury.
Garcia looks to play wide, as the ball goes across the box.
>> They tried to center it.
Webster will put a shot on goal and it's sucked up by Dawsen Dorsey.
>> Dorsey has made 91 saves so far this season with this particular shot.
It was easy for her, rather tame.
>> So the wind we know is not a factor.
We've seen that before in state championships where the wind has been a factor.
Davenport Assumption will put it ahead with Langan.
And this is going to stay with Assumption.
Here's Langan again.
Trying to center it to Jackson.
And the Lions quickly turn it around.
Boy, just the pure power of Kotula, trying to drive that ball on Des Moines Christian.
Who is going to get that first opportunity?
We saw the Lions a moment ago just pepper the net.
This one will be a goal kick here coming up for Des Moines Christian as that one sails wide.
>> Just going back to that previous play before the ball went out for a throw-in on the near side, Annika Kotula was breaking.
Pothoven had an overload.
Maguire is on the left-hand side has got to cover the space to take care of the overload.
>> Boy, such a talented team for Des Moines Christian.
They picked up two transfers.
We mentioned Garcia, but also Olivia Lombardi who came over from Valley.
The midfielders are doing their job for Des Moines Christian.
Going to stretch it out here to Lombardi.
And right there is Dorsey.
>> You can already see how Assumption are making the -- they're pressing in the central areas and making it very, very difficult for the Lions to break out with their -- the 3 versus 3 matchup in the midfield.
This could be determined by the strength in the midfield, it could win the game.
>> A lot of players return for Davenport Assumption from last year's state championship team.
They did graduate a lot.
They graduated six players off of that roster.
And now they try to lob it ahead here.
That was in the back of the net.
As it was Dru Dorsey who is trying to put the finishing touches, but not enough English on that opportunity for Dorsey.
>> No, it wasn't, maybe she should have brought it back and restarted the game again.
Being a little patient.
But it's nerves on edge right now in the first couple of minutes of the match.
>> Again, Assumption, right at midfield.
This is where a lot of the play is going to be today between these two.
The Lions with a high-powered attack, a couple of goal scorers who rank in the top five for goals scored this season in class 1a.
And for Assumption, I mean, it has been the Jade Jackson show.
But Jade is trying to figure things out in the middle.
Last year the all-tournament team captain off of that 2021 state championship.
Going to be going onto Minnesota State.
Now the drive by Ruggles.
And we do get a whistle.
There will be a foul called and a free kick here coming up.
Assumption with the big opportunity here right now.
>> As you can see, Maguire, double-teaming on Mumm.
Maguire clipped the heels of Ruggles.
>> And Ruggles will do the chores here.
If you're Des Moines Christian, how do you line up?
Is this the perfect way to do it?
>> I'll get four in the wall to be honest with you.
Three is rather tight.
I think Ruggles is going for it.
>> And it's going to sail over the net.
>> You can see already the combination in the midfield for Assumption, let's go back to the replay.
As you can see, Ruggles struck it really well, just a little bit too high.
But you can see, she's got the power behind the actual free kick.
>> See who gets the next opportunity.
Each team has had a chance here early on.
What a battle here in the 1a title game between Assumption and Des Moines Christian.
>> I've already seen a charge in the shape with Des Moines Christian lines.
I see Garcia has moved into the double ten there with Sami Webster.
They did that the only day in the semifinal.
And I see why they've done that and I think -- I saw Webster and Garcia having a chat earlier and Lombardi has come out to the left-hand side.
I think this is just something they've done on their own.
>> It's going to be intercepted by Dawsen Dorsey.
She's done that a couple of times already.
>> It's going to be difficult to beat Dorsey.
She's been here before.
We know that.
She's a senior.
She's had experience here in the 1a finals.
>> They're going to see that's out, actually, on Des Moines Christian.
So the throw will come from Assumption.
As this one is sent in deep.
>> You can already see that, Pothoven, Helgens and Savannah Shimp are going to have their hands full.
>> Again, Dorsey, that one was misplayed off of the foot of Roberts.
Dorsey, again, comes up to intercept it.
You know, each team, by the way, is fresh.
They did something here at the girl's state soccer tournament this year.
They had a day in between each game that they played.
And playing three games in a week, some teams are used to that because of the weather we had this year.
But, of course, there's nothing like playing in the state championship with all that energy and adrenaline.
>> You think of the season as well, the season was overloaded through the spring.
They were playing up to two, three games a week, a couple of training sessions here and there, but now at the state championship, it was a great decision by the high school girls union just to have the day off so that both teams could have recoveries and then there's more energy in the finals.
>> How about that play by Pothoven?
>> Pothoven actually did very well there reading the tackle, stepping in and winning it.
>> And taking it right back was Ruggles.
Each team matching it toe for toe here today.
>> So far it's been very, very energizing.
>> And a handball is going to be called.
Another opportunity here for Davenport Assumption.
Gracen Ruggles -- >> It's a little bit further back from the last one.
This could be the distance that Ruggles has been looking for.
>> Pressure on Maren Miller at net.
Ruggles was ready to go about ten minutes into the game.
This one is going to be a -- >> You see it went straight under the wall.
This is where they need to just stand their ground.
>> On the outside.
No whistle.
Trying to pick that up was Ellie Rolfstad for Davenport Assumption.
Two defenders back, but still battling against Roberts.
This will play right to Lombardi.
Lombardi with the big boot.
It will go off the ground.
Just mistimed it on the kick.
>> Not enough on that.
I mean, not enough on the actual strike.
It was from distance.
Why not have a go from there?
However, Jenna Roberts peeled out to the left, combined, keep the ball, like I said, it's 100 miles per hour.
Time to be a little more patient.
>> Des Moines Christian again.
This one is going to sail wide to Lombardi who will have a shot at it.
Lombardi will be blocked out and we're going to see our first corner kick of the 1a championship game here coming up.
>> Well, there was a 2 V 1 overload.
Went over to Lombardi.
But I tell you what, very, very good defending here from Morgan Jennings.
Just getting across to block it out for a point.
>> So doing the corner kicking for Des Moines Christian, Isabel Garcia.
This one is high and wide.
Plays the header back to the net.
Into the middle, that one is going to be blocked away.
>> I tell you what, you can tell that was from the training ground because Isabel Garcia drove the ball into the far post for Sami Webster.
Unfortunately, Bennett, when the ball landed at her feet, looked a little bit surprised at the time and didn't quite get ahold of it.
>> Isenhart had the point-blank look but it was denied by Hulsbrink.
Here we go back down to the other end.
Assumption looking to drive it.
They're going to go to the outside.
That's Langan, and what a job again done by Pothoven.
>> Very good defending there by Pothoven because there was an overload from the Assumption.
Langan and Kotula, she did very, very well to win that and go out for a goal kick.
>> Now Maren Miller with the goal kick.
Boy, these two teams are really going after it here, Justin.
>> Yeah, it's exciting to far, that's for sure.
>> No whistle.
A lot of contact.
Great tackle there in the middle.
Now Langan with the blast but it goes off of her own teammate.
me?
>> I'm going back to Gracen Ruggles, the dive, she was looking for a free kick there.
>> And here comes the opportunity, the corner kick for Assumption.
>> Ruggles looks like she's going to take the corner.
>> Does the chores here.
Lined up in front of the net is Kotula.
Right in front of the keeper.
Here's the kick.
And it's going to go on top of the net.
Doesn't count, though.
>> No, right -- it's difficult from there.
I mean, what Ruggles needs to try and do is swing it away from the goal.
She just drove it and it went in behind.
>> So Mumm will go out for Des Moines Christian and coming into the game is going to be Abby Hall, the sophomore.
So Des Moines Christian going to their bench first.
Garcia will try to launch.
This one will get out of play.
The scoreless game, a lot of activity, a couple of shots on net for each team.
The keepers have done their job.
>> The keepers have definitely done their jobs, but also the back three for both teams.
On the Lions side with Helgens in the middle, with Savannah Shimp to her right and Sophia Pothoven to her left.
>> Any change in formations by either team?
>> Just the one I've seen with Des Moines Christian Lions where Garcia is now moved into an attacking midfield role with Sami Webster.
And now Hall and Maguire are sitting in as the double six.
It was a good change.
They made it early and it's kind of sorted out the situation in the midfield.
And this will do an overload over four versus three.
>> Here's Roberts.
Lombardi will track it down.
>> Garcia should have gone to the overlap.
>> And winning it for Davenport Assumption was Langan.
A lot of physical play here, Justin.
>> Yeah, it's exciting.
This is what the game is about.
It's end to end.
So far, this is a brilliant 1a final.
>> Webster, again, trying to find a teammate.
Rolfstad will end up with it for Assumption.
Now Jackson.
Over to Rolfstad.
Trying to find it in the middle.
Again, it's one-on-one here.
Who is this out on?
Oh, corner kick coming up for Des Moines Christian.
>> Seberg and Jenna Roberts.
That's going to be one matchup today -- I would like to see Jenna Roberts possibly go out wide on the right-hand side, adding a bit of width there, pushing Garcia a little bit higher into the line.
>> Here's Gianna Bennett.
That's a high-arcer.
No chance for the header.
And it's going to be hauled in by Dorsey.
>> Great opportunity there.
>> Wow.
>> The corner wasn't -- the corner wasn't driven in, as you see this, but it came off the defender.
And Maguire, beautiful strike, just not enough to beat Dawsen Dorsey, the experience of Dorsey on goal there for the Assumption Knights.
Well won there by McGuire.
Garcia with the interception.
>> Here she goes.
Garcia with the left foot and it hits the post!
>> Dangerous.
Absolutely dangerous.
>> What a play!
Now can Assumption attack?
Jackson.
Jade Jackson battling for the ball and will have to give way to Des Moines Christian.
>> Lombardi giving that ball away.
>> Now Langan.
Oh, almost missed -- hit the cross.
>> Dorsey coming out -- I'm surprised she didn't dive for that.
Garcia, what a striker.
But I tell you what, Dorsey with the fingertip save.
Off the cross bar.
That was definitely a goal.
>> Pothoven will play it out.
>> Pothoven has been busy so far in the first 19 minutes of this game.
>> What action here so far.
Davenport Assumption going for yet another state championship, and this one is going to sail wide.
>> Ruggles leaning away from the ball.
That's why it didn't quite catch it right out for a goal kick.
>> Boy, I bevy of activity.
20 minutes into this one.
>> I believe that's Rolfstad going off.
Yeah.
Macie Ripslinger, a name we all know.
Number 18 for Assumption coming in.
>> Just a freshman -- or sophomore, excuse me.
Went onto play at the University of Iowa, her older sister.
>> Assumption really needs to get Jade Jackson on the ball a lot more.
She hasn't really had that time to get on the ball.
If Ruggles can combine with Jade Jackson, she just needs the ball at feet.
>> Dru Dorsey made the play there.
Assumption will get the ball here.
>> This is where the Lions need to keep the ball because Jenna Roberts is up on her own up front.
>> Now it's a foot race.
>> Good pressure there from Lombardi or Morgan Jennings.
A little challenge there.
>> And won it.
>> This is dangerous.
>> Yeah, Jade Jackson going to be leaking ahead.
Jade Jackson with an empty net and it's going -- job well done by Maren Miller!
>> Was that the Jade Jackson we were waiting for?
Pothoven coming across to protect the ball.
Miller coming up.
I believe the sister of Maren Miller from last year.
What a save.
All excitement here.
>> Now back the other way.
Bennett.
And Assumption, tough defensively again.
>> The Lions need to step up quickly.
There's too much space between the lines.
Foot race to the ball, and Maren >> Wow, transitional moments.
>> Take a look at this play from a moment before.
>> Good defending from Pothoven and then Miller coming out, just managing to get the ball before Jade Jackson got in there.
>> And it looked like she injured herself, but she remains in the game.
>> Jennings did well there to intercept the cross from Bennett.
>> Miller, again, with an easier play here, relatively speaking.
>> Yes.
Definitely.
As Langan was lurking on her shoulder.
Pothoven has done very well on the left-hand side of Helgens in the back three.
Her athletic ability and pace just to get back in and get her body between the opponent is outstanding so far.
>> Let's see, we're going to get some substitutes into the game.
>> Looks like Mumm is coming back in and Courtney Smith for the Lions.
>> You see Kaitlyn Mumm right there on your screen listed as 6'1".
Plays all sports.
And Coach Webster says, very consistent player.
>> Yes, she is.
Simple.
Likes to break up play and longside her she has McGuire.
>> So here come the Lions.
And Assumption again with the steal.
>> Given away there earlier.
Ruggles is on the ball.
>> A little back and forth.
Take a look at Jackson.
Trying to create something here.
>> Good defending there from Smith.
Just came into the game.
>> And Smith, again, will be up ended.
No whistle.
A lot of contact between her and Ruggles.
>> Ruggles is down out of your picture.
Gingerly gets up as you can see from our end.
>> Dawsen Dorsey -- let's take a look at this collision.
>> Fair tackle.
Nothing wrong with that.
Both players went to the ball.
>> Who says soccer is a noncontact sport, right?
>> Can't touch each other in basketball.
There's a lot of contact in soccer, that's for sure.
>> Oh, yeah.
We've seen it so far here in the 1a title game.
It's the first of three state championships here on Iowa PBS.
Garcia battling it out.
And now we will see a whistle.
>> Garcia, very competitive player.
So is Jennings, by the way.
>> Assumption asking for a yellow card.
They won't get it.
Just a foul call.
>> Garcia lunging in with her right foot.
Jennings took it a touch past her.
I don't think there was any intention there, to be honest with you.
They got to watch out for Garcia breaking from the midfield.
That's what she's going to do.
>> Assumption will hold it.
>> That's well played there by Helgens.
Now looking for the long ball.
>> Almost had the chance there with Roberts.
Now here is Garcia who is going to be bodied off the ball and there will be a whistle.
We mentioned the physical play.
That time Ruggles and Garcia collided.
>> I think this was more retaliation.
Ruggles coming in.
Would you look at the previous tackle.
It's good, nothing wrong with that, but this is dollars territory with the free kick.
She scored one the other day from a different angle in the semifinals.
This is her distance.
>> Four-person roll for Assumption as Garcia will eye it in.
>> I wouldn't have four from that distance.
>> Garcia with the shot.
And a little bit too much on it.
There is no wind now.
It's been a very beautiful day here.
Partly cloudy, 70.
>> She needed the wind coming into it just to hold the ball up.
>> Yeah, a little too much oomph on that.
So 26 minutes into this game.
A bevy of activity and we're still scoreless.
Belle Langan coming back into the game for Assumption, part of that big back wall.
>> Maddy Nigey, she's now up front for Assumption in the ninth position.
>> The Lions with a little give and go on that far end.
And it's going to go to Assumption.
What has made the Knights such a perennial power here in state soccer?
>> Outside -- on the east side, there's a lot of soccer programs out there, a lot of these players are playing in the programs out there.
There's -- I would say, four, five clubs out there.
So most of these girls are playing year in and year out and it's is same with the Lions.
A lot of teammates from the club, clubs here in Des Moines -- in the Des Moines area.
So that's what's making this game so competitive as well.
>> Elizabeth Maus, the head coach for Davenport Assumption has never lost a postseason game in her coaching career.
You see Garcia win that fall.
>> Garcia asking for a free kick feeling that her shirt was being tucked.
>> The head referee has been all over it today and been very consistent here.
That's what you ask for out of the officials.
>> Mumm was looking for Savannah Shimp on the outside.
They moved here onto the right in the wingback position in the seven.
>> Here's Garcia with the blast and Dorsey knocks it down.
>> Garcia didn't have many options there.
She had to cut inside and go for goal.
Smith wasn't giving her an angle.
Would have been a better option for her as far as the supporting angle.
>> Now for the opportunity here for Des Moines Christian.
A little back and forth.
The top-ranked Knights looking for their sixth straight title.
That's the table stakes.
>> That's well played by Sami Webster.
McGuire sitting in front of the back three cleaning up players.
She goes down there.
It was a good tackle there from Jade Jackson as the Knights look to go.
>> Here they go.
And here it goes away.
A terrific play by Helgens.
>> And Smith has the ball looking for Mumm.
>> They slid Mumm around a little bit, haven't they.
>> The rotation in the midfield.
Jenna Roberts is in a good position.
I would have given the ball to Jenna Roberts, she was through.
>> But Mumm took the shot and again, Dorsey hauls it in.
>> Dorsey has done well as the Knights look to break on the far side.
>> Maddy Nigey.
Again, substitution for Des Moines Christian.
>> Looks like Bennett and Lombardi coming back into the game.
>> Gianna Bennett you might know, she's the kicker on the high school football team.
Number 20 for Des Moines Christian.
Wants to play college soccer and just a sophomore.
A team character is what Coach Webster called her.
>> She also plays on the basketball team, I believe.
>> Certainly does.
>> Des Moines Christian going to be loaded again next year for high school basketball.
But this soccer team has certainly met the expectations.
They knew that they were going to be good.
Des Moines Christian coming off of last year's state championship loss.
Of course with the bevy of talent, they've gone toe to toe with Assumption in the first half.
>> Just like last year, expect Assumption managed to hold on towards the end.
However, it's a little bit different today.
Exciting, exciting time so far.
In the way there by Mumm.
Garcia gets a head up, looking for Jenna Roberts.
A big touch well won by Jennings.
>> A lot of contact on the side.
And Assumption will hold on to it.
>> Referee has got her hands full, that's for sure.
She was looking to see which player pulled Garcia.
Garcia is going to be a target because she is a very impressive player.
>> Here's Ruggles.
At the ready.
A high-lofting ball, going to be hauled in by the keeper Miller.
>> That was easy for Miller.
Should have gone -- McGuire should have broken into the space, in the hard space on the far side but they are tired legs out there.
The transition was on.
>> Now Kotula.
Boy, not missing many opportunities, Helgens.
>> And Jade Jackson with some space.
I'm surprised she never pulled that ball onto her left foot and had a go.
She was looking out wide for Langan.
>> Jackson.
Fancy dribbling.
With the left foot.
Had it just deflected away.
>> That was just enough from Helgens, but that little turn, she swivelled to the left and then cut in, swivelled into the right, cut into the left.
That was dangerous.
Just got to watch out for her.
Looks like Langan is going off.
Dru Dorsey coming back in.
>> And Dorsey has been quite active in her time here early.
In high school soccer you can substitute as frequently as you would like.
>> And I see a positional change on the field.
Jenna Roberts has moved into the midfield and Garcia has moved into the nine.
She's going to need support, though.
But she's very smart.
She'll drop in as a false nine every now and again trying to pull centerbacks out of position.
>> That was Roberts.
>> You're right on Roberts there, BJ.
Ruggles has written a few tackles, forcing a few fouls on her, just to get those free kicks.
But definitely a foul there.
>> Can Assumption capitalize here?
A free kick here, Ruggles.
Now the shot goes wide by Assumption.
>> Not a particularly good free kick, but caused problems.
It was on the ground and bobbling in that penalty area just because of all the little bumps in there.
The boys played yesterday as well.
A lot of activity on these fields.
>> Garcia.
Isabel.
No whistle.
Play will resume.
>> Lombardi and Jenna Roberts up to go to Bennett.
>> McGuire did enough there.
Just to play it out.
Think about it, Jenna Roberts had a huge game in the first game against Van Meter.
She had a couple of goals.
Sami Webster with a couple of goals already in this state tournament.
Assumption trying to get one on the board here before the end of the first half.
We're under 4:50 to play.
>> Dorsey did well there.
Just managing to keep the ball.
Too many white jerseys around here.
>> Yeah, it just goes flight to the post.
Not in.
But it's going to be a throw-in.
From the side, Jackson just lost her footing.
>> Ruggles did well there.
>> And here she is.
She'll center it to Dorsey and it goes wide and it will be a goal kick in front of the net for Miller.
>> The Lions were very lucky there because they all ball-watched.
And in the far post you had a black shirt coming in.
But Ruggles with a crafty little turn to bring the ball onto her left foot.
>> Boy, Assumption has really neutralized that streaking, or the fly route, if you will, by Des Moines Christian.
Here is Lombardi.
Will try to track it down.
>> Look at Jennings coming across again.
>> Jennings just with the perfect steal.
>> Jennings has done very well.
Look at her shirt.
It's ripped.
You can tell she's been in the battles.
>> Helgens and a foul will be called on Dorsey.
>> Yeah.
>> And the freshman saying "me"?
>> It was a tired foul, that's for sure.
>> Now Mumm with the free kick here at midfield.
>> Decent delivery.
Just enough for Seberg to clear it.
Well played there by Dorsey.
The freshman will push it ahead with the left foot.
>> And Helgens will try to turn it around.
>> Just enough cover there, BJ.
McGuire.
>> Garcia, trying to cause havoc here.
Roberts.
>> Webster with the shot with the right foot and it will be hauled in by Dorsey.
>> Got to drive that ball to either side of Dorsey.
But Webster intercepting the pass.
Good strike.
Just not enough to beat Dorsey.
>> Could she have taken that in a little bit further?
>> It could have gone into the bottom opposite corner.
>> Inside of 2:00 to play in the first half.
Still scoreless.
Assumption trying to regain the momentum here.
>> Pothoven didn't quite get ahold of it.
>> Jackson with the pass ahead to Dorsey.
>> Lovely flick there by Jackson.
>> No whistle.
Clean play.
Here's Ruggles.
The header up and Miller will attack it.
>> Somebody has to track Jackson into the box.
That could have been really dangerous in the flick-on was right.
You see the ball coming in from Ruggles.
The flick-on, if it was the right type, Jade Jackson was in.
>> Here's Bennett.
Foot race to the ball.
And it's going to be won by Assumption.
Good job by Nataly Bahns.
>> Just clip that in over.
Well played by Savannah Shimp on the far side.
Looks like referee gave a handball, I believe.
Savannah Shimp.
>> So one more go here for Assumption.
Inside of 20 seconds when this one will resume with Ruggles.
>> Dorsey, nice little left footer.
Around the corner, volley.
Catching all the white shirts off guard.
>> And this one is really lived up to the expectation.
We played 40 minutes of soccer.
Still scoreless.
Davenport Assumption and Des Moines Christian.
We'll be back in a moment as you're watching the 1a state championship game here on Iowa PBS.

Des Moines Christian and Davenport Assumption in the 1a title game here on Iowa PBS.
Well, Iowa PBS profiles the experiences and perspectives of Iowans in our ongoing series "In Their Words."
Join us as we sit down with Sofie Leng.
>> My name is Sofie Leng and I'm a saxophone player for the south O'Brien jazz band.
♪♪ I started playing saxophone in fifth grade.
I started playing on the alpha saxophone.
A little bit higher tone than tenor saxophone, what I play now.
Growing up, I listened to a lot of music with my dad.
Especially '80s music.
And there was always a crazy saxophone part in the song and I always thought it was really cool.
So the end of sixth grade, I switched over to tenor saxophone and then I started playing for the high school jazz band in seventh grade, and I've been doing it ever since.
When I initially switched over from playing alto saxophone to tenor saxophone in sixth grade, it was really challenging because it is a bigger mouthpiece and I had to switch from always playing in the middle of my legs to playing on the side of my legs and it's been a really fun time learning, like, challenging songs.
The South O'Brien band program is small but mighty, considering we have 200 students or so that attend our high school.
We have a lot of band participation and our jazz band won state back in 2008 and this is our second trip to state this year and it's been a really good experience.
This past season has been extremely fun.
We kind of started out on a rough note because we were not used to going to so many competitions due to COVID last year.
We only went to one last year.
So it's been a lot of fun being able to actually travel and compete at these competitions, and it's been a lot of work.
It's been 7:00 a.m. practices.
But it's truly been worth it, and we have come a really long way.
I'm improving in two out of three of our songs and, of course, I have the feature piece for our ballad.
♪♪ I've been decently successful in getting a few outstanding soloist awards.
I just found out that I got the outstanding soloist award for this performance in Ames.
So that's really exciting.
I worked really hard for these awards and I find improving really fun.
A lot of our other soloists have also received these awards.
It's been fun bouncing ideas off of each other and I can't take the credit for these awards because it's the people behind me in the rhythm section, drummer, pianist that make these awards possible and listening to what I'm playing stylistically and -- it's been an honor to receive these awards and it's been great.
Since I started out in fifth grade, I think that I've grown a lot as a musician and that's also affected the way that I live my life.
If you would have told sixth grade me that I would be participating in band in high school, I don't think she would have believed you.
It's truly been the people around me that have made this experience so great for me.
And we push each other to succeed and to grow as musicians and encourage each other to solo or take a risk and to always have fun when you're performing.
My piece of advice for those around me is to soak it in and never let a minute pass you because it truly does go by really fast and these memories are something that you will cherish forever and just to have fun when doing it too.
Because you could have your worst performance yet, but it could be one of the most fun.

>>> Scoreless game here between Des Moines Christian and Davenport Assumption through the first half of play.
Justin Vorster, this is BJ Schaben.
As we take a look at the first-half highlights here.
There were plenty.
But the keepers did their job.
>> The ball came off the hand of the center back.
Not quite enough technique in that one.
McGuire with a left-footed strike.
Easy pickings for Dorsey.
This was the one, Dorsey with the fingertips of -- great interception there.
Look at Miller come through and deny Jackson.
>> Maren Miller such a tough player and showing that in net.
Justin, what's got to happen here in the second half?
>> I think both teams, if they keep the shape the same, especially with the Lions with Sami Webster and Garcia now as the double ten, they made that change in the first half and I think it's working for them.
Assumption, pressure on the right-hand side.
They haven't really tested Shimp on their left-hand side.
>> Let's take a look at the statistics through the first half.
You see the shots on goal, Des Moines Christian has a big advantage and corner kicks too as well.
>> You can see that.
However, Assumption has had more of the possession.
The Lions have been counterattacking.
>> Well, we are ready for the second half of play to get under way.
It's the first of three state championships here on Iowa PBS today.
Hope you sit back, relax and enjoy.
It's tough back to sit back and relax.
As intense as this game has been through the first 40.
>> In the first half, we didn't even mention the time once because it was so exciting.
It was fireworks end to end.
>> So we are set and ready for play as the head referee marks it in.
Each team has switched sides.
And we are ready to roll.
For Des Moines Christian, let's observe their formation as this time they launch it down to Bennett.
Bennett will center it and it's going to be denied as Jade Jackson will come away with it for Davenport Assumption.
>> Again, looking for the early pressure, the Lions, just trying to catch Assumption off guard especially after the ten-minute break.
>> Here's Ruggles.
Now to Langan.
Each team, it seems like, is trying to get their footing after that frenzy of the first 40 minutes.
>> Yeah, and it was just feeling each other out in the first half and then there was a little bit of a lull in the game.
That was just fatigue after this break.
It will be interesting to see what happens.
Just trying to look at a couple of changes here.
But the shape stays the same as Webster is looking out wide here for Bennett.
>> Bennett, well defended on the play by Nataly Bahns.
>> Bahns did well there.
Just getting across Bennett.
Shielding it out.
>> This one remains in.
>> Good turn by Webster.
>> Garcia in the middle.
Will blast it with the left foot, but it's going to be hauled in by Dawsen Dorsey.
>> It was a good turn.
Garcia didn't have anybody stretching the line off the ball.
I think Jenna Roberts should have possibly stretched the line.
Roberts strikes the ball and it's going in and over.
>> So exciting.
I'm telling you, Dorsey had the net covered.
There was no way this was going to get in, but it almost didn't go in.
The ways the goals have been scored this week I wouldn't be surprised.
>> Webster was looking for the 1-2 combination.
Down the right-hand side or near side.
>> And an opportunity here for Assumption, but it will be denied.
They'll get the throw-in, though.
>> Coming across and knocking the ball out.
Here's a chance.
>> Dorsey from the corner.
Just launched it up and over.
So from the net, the goal kick here for Maren Miller, she'll give way to Helgens.
Rolfstad could not handle the ball there.
At what point does the week -- even though they had a day of rest, at what point does the week, the adrenaline catch up to you at this championship game.
>> It's every day.
Quarterfinals, rest, semifinals, championship game.
The adrenaline is probably still flowing as -- >> Here comes Garcia.
Oh, what a knockaway by Bahns.
Here's Webster.
Boy, and Ruggles, again, terrific job from the midfield coming in to intercept.
>> Did very well there, Ruggles.
Stepping up into breakup play.
>> Assumption will try to lead it out and trying to track that down is going to be Pothoven.
>> Pothoven did well there.
>> Here's Dorsey.
Will center it.
Jackson with the header.
And it will be a goal kick here for Des Moines Christian.
>> Very difficult to connect with that type of ball -- that delivery coming into the box.
Lofted in.
Very difficult to get power on that.
Now if the ball is driven in, Jackson would have been able to direct that to where she wanted to.
Jackson's now just sitting in between the lines and the ten.
But McGuire and Mumm are really keeping a good eye on her.
As soon as she gets the ball, there's pressure on Jackson.
>> Ruggles, what a player.
Working against Mumm and Mumm will win it for the moment.
>> Nobody is stepping onto Jackson, show.
The midfield didn't shift around quick enough and press.
>> In open space.
The blast and it's going to hit the post.
His shot -- the shot is going to be hauled in by Miller.
>> That came from nowhere.
Langan hitting the post.
Miller didn't know about it.
Then gets the second ball.
I'm sure she thought that was going out for a goal kick.
>> Each team has had their chance here in the early goings and each team has been held out of the net.
Here's Rolfstad.
To the middle.
Mumm will knock it down.
>> Mumm did well just coming across, screening the ball -- >> A little give and go on the back line here for Assumption.
Now they're loft it down for Langan.
>> Ruggles sitting in as a double six with three defenders in behind.
>> And Assumption will go to their bench.
Rolfstad will check out.
>> Just going back to the formation change with Ruggles sitting in as the double six on the pivot.
Taking care of Jenna Roberts and Sami Webster and Garcia has moved up to the nine and the center forward.
They're trying to screen that ball going for it.
>> Helgens with the big kick.
It might be an opportunity with Garcia lurking.
Again, with three back, for Assumption, they're able to control it.
>> And Garcia nearly intercepted that pass.
>> Here's Roberts.
Or beg your pardon, Webster.
And a tackle by Garcia who will create the play.
Garcia gets it in!
>> Oh, my word.
Oh, my word.
Absolutely magical.
What a strike for Garcia?
Kept it on the ground.
That was driven in with pace.
>> And Des Moines Christian takes a 1-0 lead as they finally -- they've been peppering the net all morning long, finally gets one into the back of the net from Isabel Garcia.
The junior who is already committed to play at Indiana state.
Plays at the sporting Iowa club.
Really hammered that one home.
Created it.
And the Lions have the advantage.
Can Assumption attack back?
>> Pothoven did well in the back corner.
These next five minutes are very, very important.
For the Lions, though.
>> We've seen it for both teams, right?
Both ways.
The next five minutes really determine the outcome of the game, especially when you have such a tight contest.
How do you respond to adversity?
And the header is going to be put up by Jackson and this is going to be out.
>> For a goal kick, yeah.
But you see, there's the moment, again.
When we talk about the five minutes, as we look at this goal, pressure by Garcia, but what a strike.
What a strike.
Clean, effective, great technique to Dorsey's right-hand side.
>> Des Moines Christian with the advantage.
And so far here in the state tournament, you think about in the semifinals for Davenport Assumption, it was Nevada that got a surprise goal, Assumption hurry.
Can they do the same here in the 1a title game?
>> Well, Assumption has it in them, that's for sure.
If the Lions get a second goal, it could open up the game a little more, definitely from the Assumption Knights.
>> And we are going to see a foul called.
>> And it looks like a yellow card on Shimp.
>> When you think about how amazing this run has been for Assumption, this is their 12th overall title game and just the second goal that they've allowed.
The last one was back in 2011 against union.
>> Shimp is going to be replaced.
>> Yellow card was issued.
Here's Ruggles.
The big, lofty kick.
The header, still playable.
>> The first header there by Helgens and then Bennett clearing the ball.
There's the overload on the left.
>> Assumption, down off into the corner.
Looking to attack is Ripslinger.
>> Looks like it went out.
Goal kick.
>> The freshman had the opportunity, had the angle.
>> Courtney Smith, number 4, coming in for Lombardi.
Quick change.
Mumm is going out as well.
Abby Hall coming in.
>> Now in the middle, here's Dorsey.
The deep bench just smothering for the Lions.
Now Jackson.
Can she find a seam?
The blast, and it's going to be hauled in by Miller.
>> We have a player down for the Lions and it looks like -- as we see the strike coming in from Jackson and it's well taken there by Miller.
>> Now the attention on the injured Lion out on the field.
The injury occurred away from the ball.
>> Is it Garcia?
>> It was not in our vantage point.
She's very slow to get up.
It's Jenna Roberts.
>> Jenna Roberts.
>> Don't know what exactly occurred because as we mentioned it was away from the action.
But Roberts slow to get up and will go off.
>> And Lombardi is going to come in and replace Roberts.
Doesn't look like anything serious.
Went in for the challenge, got smashed to the ground.
We didn't catch it out of our picture.
>> Such a luxury, though, for Des Moines Christian, a lot of depth on this team.
>> Yeah.
The substitutions they made have been pretty consistent with Hall and Smith coming into the game.
And it seems to be the same changes.
Obviously you're in the final, you want to have your best 11, whoever is coming off the bench to replace players.
>> Good tackle and now we have a whistle on Jackson.
A foul will be called.
>> Mumm did very well there.
Frustrating Jackson, though.
Credit to the Lions, they've been pressing in the midfield and frustrating players like Jackson and Ruggles.
As we take a look at this again, great there by McGuire.
Getting a body across Jackson and Jackson just lashing out.
Helgens with the -- this will go for a goal kick.
Slightly wide.
She had Pothoven to her left inside.
Helgens, ACL injury at the end of the season.
I know it because she played club for me at VSA.
Senior.
Made a comeback.
I was very surprised, actually, BJ, when she texted me and said, I'm back playing.
>> Limited minutes, but back playing.
And as Coach Webster told us, it's all in for her for the state championship game.
>> I know.
>> Garcia had another chance there.
Now this is going to be tracked down.
Trying to play with it was Bennett.
Going to be held in by Webster.
Now back to Bennett.
It's a battle for the ball.
Bennett trying to gain some clearance.
Jackson still can't clear it for Assumption.
Off into the corner, this is Webster.
Going to take one from the side and it will be a goal kick here coming up for Assumption.
>> I thought Webster was going to try to win a corner there.
Quickly get running into position, get the shape back.
See all the white shirts around the ball.
Good pressure there.
Smith just picking it up.
>> This one going to be headed back the other way.
It's a battle for the ball.
Lombardi, Garcia, left out open space.
Here's an opportunity for the Lions.
Garcia.
And, again, Assumption just collapses down.
It's almost as if Garcia is now marked with Roberts out of the game.
>> She'll be marked -- totally marked.
She'll have two players and her tendencies are, she'll get the ball on her right foot and cut to her left foot like she did there.
>> And when you talk about marked, explain what that means.
>> Two players, one tight marking from behind.
As long as you can see the ball, don't get too tight into Garcia because she will roll you into place.
Garcia is alone up front and the support is not coming in quick enough.
Right now it's okay with them 1-0 up at this point.
>> So free kick here after the foul.
You can tell Dru Dorsey is going to be a player.
>> Oh, yeah, that's for sure.
She's a presence out there, especially for a freshman.
She's playing with confidence as well.
>> Here is Jackson.
Assumption just -- I mean, they're down one.
They just can't gain an opportunity.
Let's see if they get one here with Ripslinger From the side.
Ripslinger with her left foot and we're going to see a corner kick here coming up for Assumption.
>> And Helgens coming in with the cover there.
Did really well to get in there with the tackle.
But this is the first time that Assumption have actually tested Hall.
As you can see there on the replay.
Hall now who has come in at right center back, Yeates is coming into the game here for Assumption.
>> So Ruggles will do the corner kick from the right foot from the left side, it's going to be bounced back out and we'll do it all over again.
The fresh ball, Grace ready to go.
This one sent in.
And going to be headed back out.
>> I believe Sami Webster just getting a glance on the header.
>> Dorsey on the corner.
Tried to slice it in.
It's left open and that one goes over the top of the net.
>> Ripslinger.
As you can see, Ripslinger getting inside the defender there and leaning back and falling just over the -- >> Just missed it.
>> Wow.
>> Jenna Roberts is coming back in with Mumm.
Courtney Smith has gone out and Abby Hall.
And going to be intercepted by Sami Webster.
The Lions putting a lot of pressure on the ball.
>> That was a good tackle there.
Misplaced past there by Bennett.
>> See who is hungry for the next goal.
Right now Des Moines Christian with the 1-0 lead.
Isabel Garcia with the lone goal here in the second half.
>> Here's the change.
It looks like Shimp is coming back into the game.
I don't think Assumption Knights tested on this left-hand side.
They kept going down the right-hand side.
Pothoven has that covered at the moment.
She hasn't put a foot wrong.
>> I think the official going to say, no, this belongs to Assumption, not Des Moines Christian.
On the throw-in.
>> Wonder when Assumption are going to start pushing an extra player on the line.
Two up front, maybe three on the line.
If Ruggles pushes on a little further and have Hulsbrink sitting, it will cause some problems.
They need to press the Lions further back if they want to get back into this game.
Maybe Coach Maus is going to wait until 15 minutes to go.
We'll see.
>> We know that they haven't been in this position in a long time in the state championship.
>> Unfamiliar territory for them.
But we'll see how they change.
They've got the leadership out there, they can make this happen.
>> Trying to make it happen with Morgan Jennings.
The header towards the middle.
Just a missed opportunity there for the Knights.
>> But you can see, it's coming.
They're pressing and pressing.
>> And we will see a foul called, just a fou on Garcia who remains down on the ground.
>> Take a look at this again.
As the defender comes in, gets a toe to the ball.
That's not a foul.
That's a throw-in.
>> Okay.
>> The referee was absolutely right.
But Garcia did take a tumble.
She's a tough kid.
I know she'll get up from that anyway.
>> Drawing the ire of Des Moines Christian fans but they don't have the visuals that you do at home.
>> That's true.
Luckily we have the replay as well.
>> This one in deep.
Mumm with the blast.
And it will be hauled in.
When you think about it too, Justin.
If you're at home, you're making the calls or here in the stands and you don't like the calls, you have a golden opportunity with the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union to become an official.
It's an opportunity for everyone at home, even if you're sitting in a lawn chair back behind -- if you're in softball, you think of a ball or a strike, log on today and find out how you can become an official.
They need officials.
It just goes over the net.
>> They get closer and closer and closer.
Just not dipping for them at the time.
Dorsey, I know, right foot.
A little bend in the -- not enough, though.
Miller just guiding it over the cross bar.
Going back to the officials, we don't have enough officials in the Iowa area.
Actually, there's a lack of it.
And it's -- it's just -- as we look at this opportunity here -- and Helgens did well.
That was Yeates that took the shot.
>> New names coming into the game.
You almost get the sense that Assumption is resting up.
Here's Ripslinger.
Centering pass denied.
Mumm.
Now Ruggles who has been quiet here for the most part in the second half.
Now from the side.
And it's going to be ruled out.
>> Just went out.
>> Oh.
You're right, Assumption getting closer and closer and closer.
>> Pothoven says -- as she presses out there, Pothoven is launching in too quickly.
She's getting there, putting pressure, but she's got to steady herself and just make sure that she's guiding the ball down the line.
That's fine.
But don't lunge in because she's been beaten out there twice.
>> A late whistle.
Who's got an advantage, though.
>> The official was right there.
Mumm is in good space.
If she gets on the hard turn with the overload with Jenna Roberts on the far side, it looks like Mumm is going to go long.
>> Ruggles trying to help it on.
>> A little bobble on the ball.
Here is Webster.
Now Ripslinger with a blast deep with a pass trying to find Dorsey.
A lot of traffic in this one will be kicked out and it will be a corner kick coming up for Assumption.
>> When Ripslinger got that ball and started running into space, the movement of Langan spinning out, giving the opportunity for Langan.
Belle Langan will do the corner quick this time.
Her first attempt on the day.
Went to the middle.
Helgens, trying to get it out of there.
>> She still wins that ball.
>> Here's Garcia.
It's in.
Wow.
Isabel Garcia now with the shot and it will be hauled in by Dawsen Dorsey.
>> Sami Webster made a late run, but, Garcia, look at that.
All that work, win it is ball, keeps it in.
But Webster was on the far post as we see -- a foul by Helgens on Dorsey.
>> Here might be the chance.
>> Ruggles.
She's had a few in the first half.
>> Ruggles with the free kick.
Big-time spacing by each of the players.
Mumm at 6'1" stands in front of her.
The loft.
>> It's a good ball in.
Very good ball in.
Just bouncing in front of Miller.
She calmly took that.
>> Nearing the 15-minute mark to play.
Des Moines Christian trying to win a state championship here.
Their first ever.
Assumption trying to battle their way back and win yet another.
>> It's a battle of the midfield.
>> Dorsey.
And it will be a goal kick here.
>> Dorsey did well to get around Shimp there.
Not quite enough on the cross.
Just enough from Shimp.
It looks like Courtney Smith is coming back into the game for Jenna Roberts.
>> With a 1-0 lead, you can afford to do this, right?
>> Yeah, and it's the same changes.
Smith, Hall, Dan Webster is keeping it very, very consistent at this point.
I'm just wondering if he's going to change into a back four, go into a 4-3-2-1 and try and solidify the game.
He's probably waiting until ten minutes to go or eight.
Because at some stage, Assumption is going to start playing forward with extra players.
They're going to push players forward.
>> And a foul -- no, no, no.
Just out.
There's a lot of contact, pushing and shoving.
But you have that as you scrum for the ball.
>> Look at the run on the outside.
What a great ball in there by McGuire.
>> A little toe tap going to be easily handled by Dorsey.
>> Kotula didn't quite cover the space.
>> The sun is starting to open up here, started the day partly cloudy.
But, boy, Des Moines Christian with a 1-0 lead here off of an Isabel Garcia goal here early on in this late half.
And Garcia still battling for it right now.
>> Look at the strength in Garcia.
>> And a foul will be called on Garcia.
>> Just has a low sense of gravity.
I'm just looking at the contact before.
It looked like shoulder to shoulder.
Garcia is very, very strong.
>> Morgan Jennings, name has been called quite oven today.
And here she is again.
Quite the disrupter.
Jennings driving it deep.
Now the blast from way back, but it's going to be easily handled by Miller.
>> Going to put a bit more bend on the ball there, Jennings.
Everything has gone towards the goalkeeper.
Garcia is going to take a change, go out for a little bit of a break.
Jenna Roberts coming in.
A well-earned break, that's for sure.
She'll probably take about three, four minutes.
Change for change, quality for quality there.
Jenna Roberts coming in.
When Seberg thinks it's going to be easy, it's not.
That's a very good punt there by Miller.
>> Played up and around.
Here comes Des Moines Christian with Courtney Smith.
Just taken away that time by Piper Seberg.
>> McGuire there to pick the ball up.
Mumm is comfortable.
>> Webster.
Again, the defense steps up.
Ripslinger out ahead.
Trying to find Langan.
And Helgens says no.
>> That's well played by Helgens.
Just a little cut back.
>> Here we go, down the field.
This is going to be an opportunity for Roberts and it's deflected.
>> Enough just to get -- >> No deflection.
>> Seberg did enough to get across, just to cut that angle out.
We have another change here.
It's Mumm who is coming in.
Abby Hall.
Consistency in the changes.
>> Des Moines Christian trying to get some fresh legs out there defensively to try to hold up this 1-0 lead.
Trying to drive it deep.
Langan with the blast will be blocked back.
>> Hauled it in enough there to cut off the angle to the pass to Dorsey.
Just enough.
>> This is going to stay with Assumption.
>> Jennings is causing disruption down on the far side.
>> And Miller will hold them.
>> McGuire has to cover Pothoven because Jennings is now -- she's three, four deliveries so far and it's getting somebody onto the end on it for Assumption Knights.
>> Ten minutes to play.
Here's Ruggles.
Right at midfield.
Now Assumption that has -- has Elizabeth Maus made an adjustment here?
>> I don't see it now.
Take the risk, go two at the back, push an extra player forward.
Play a 2-2, get five on the line.
We're looking at close to nine minutes left here, BJ.
This is the time to take the chance.
There's the ball through the middle.
What a run there from Yeates.
Should have gone to a -- >> And a foul will be called.
Boy, thinking she got that cleanly was Megan McGuire.
And Helgens trying to make a case here.
>> Yeah, but the referee is going to stick to a decision, that's for sure.
But Helgens has the right to it as one of the captains of the team.
She hasn't wore the knee brace all week.
I spoke to her after the semifinals.
She said that her quadricep was hurting.
>> Here's Ruggles.
The little leading pass, and it's going to be picked off by Miller.
>> A good idea on the free kick there by Ruggles.
But, Miller, stepped off here line.
Read it well.
>> Bennett with the pick.
Trying to lead it ahead to Roberts.
The sophomore tracks it down from the corner.
>> Roberts should have taken that into the corner.
It looks like Garcia is going to come back into the game.
All ready for it.
Predictions were right on that.
Four minutes' rest.
>> Nailed it.
Ripslinger.
Again, Bennett getting in the way.
Bennett with the lofty ball.
Again, Dorsey hauling it in.
7:20 play.
>> Push Ripslinger further up the field because she has gotten behind Shimp a number of times.
Get three down the middle.
I think Assumption should make that change.
>> The ball was down the middle for Yeates.
Langan opted to go inside, into pressure.
See Yeates is on the line there with Dorsey.
What a turn by Ruggles.
Now Ruggles with a blast that just goes over the net.
>> Getting closer and closer.
As we look at it again, Ruggles onto her left foot.
Too much height in it.
She just needs the ball to dip.
Again, great technique, though.
>> We've seen that time and time again here today.
A lot of the shots by Assumption just going a little high.
>> Mumm and Garcia back in the game.
Nigey has also come into the game for the Knights.
She's gone up front.
She's a forward.
Gone up front there with -- it looks like Dorsey is still in.
>> Tough with the ball that time.
Bahns.
Des Moines Christian with a 1-0 lead here late.
>> You notice Jade Jackson has not come into the game the second half.
I wonder if that's an injury.
>> You would think so.
>> She's an impactful player, that's for sure.
>> Last year's all-tournament team captain, Jade Jackson, not in the game right now.
Dorsey trying to hold it in.
Assumption with the opportunity.
The blast, and it's going to be snared by Maren Miller.
>> And Miller, what positioning.
But Yeates, why didn't you drive it across.
As we look at the angle right here, obviously the defender was coming across.
I still would have gone across the goalkeeper.
>> 4:20 to play.
We were that close to seeing a tie game.
>> Needs to get across just to support and screen the ball, helping McGuire.
She's too far wide.
Jenna Roberts.
But Seberg comes across to clean up.
>> It has been seven years since Assumption last lost to a 1a school.
And now we have a whistle.
Too much contact there.
Sami Webster with the foul.
>> McGuire did well there.
And Mumm is stepping in.
>> Garcia finds Mumm.
>> Jennings wins the ball.
It looked like it was a deflection.
But, no, can't see that.
>> A lot of contact at midfield.
>> That looks like -- >> Slow to get up.
But is up.
Under 3:00 to play here in the 1a championship game.
>> Looking for the flick-on.
>> An opportunity, Ripslinger!
>> Free kick on Dorsey, I believe.
We look at this again.
Yeah.
50/50, but could have gone either way, yeah, I'll give a free kick for that too.
>> Tough call to make at this time.
>> Especially with the clock ticking down.
>> Des Moines Christian trying to hold it off to garner a state soccer championship.
>> Sami Webster just managing to win a corner deep down inside.
>> It will be a throw-in.
>> And I have doubt they're going to shield the ball in the corner there with 2:00 to go.
>> Inside of 2:00 to play.
>> The press of the white shirts deep down in the corner.
Not letting Assumption out, killing time.
Garcia will probably keep this ball.
>> Now takes a shot.
Just clubbed it with her left foot.
1:30 to play.
Assumption looking for that extra juice to try to tie this one up and force extra play.
>> Jennings made an inverted run inside from the right-hand side.
>> Well, that's one thing that Dan Webster has said about this team.
Their IQ for soccer is really high.
>> Yes, it is.
>> And you're seeing it on display right now.
They're just killing the ball and trying to preserve a championship.
Now that one -- >> Garcia.
>> Just as we said.
>> Having fun?
>> Yeah.
>> Lombardi made a run there on the far post.
>> The clock ticking down.
Des Moines Christian fans on their feet.
Trying to do something not many people have done and that's beat Davenport Assumption in a championship game.
What a run by the Assumption Knights as they have won five in a row and today not their day.
15 seconds to go.
And Des Moines Christian trying to make history for their school.
Listen to the countdown.
And it's over.
Des Moines Christian is your class 1a state champ.
>> What a game.
What a game, BJ.
Exciting.
Deservedly so, it could have gone either way.
>> A 1-0 victory for Des Moines Christian as Isabel Garcia scored unassisted at the 48-minute mark, the difference in this game and she made something out of nothing to get that goal.
>> Well, the pressure she aplayed at the center back at the time, and she worked hard at it.
She won the ball.
And the goal was just phenomenal.
Perfect strike.
Bottom corner to the right-hand side of Dorsey.
A well-deserved victory.
Same matchup from last year as well W the Lions losing that match and I'm sure there's going to be some happy faces out there.
Helgens was part of that, Pothoven was part of that.
Mumm, McGuire, Roberts.
Sadness to happiness now.
>> The Lions put it together.
A lot of returnees from last year's state championship team.
They knew they had it.
They met expectations and exceeded it, now by winning the 1a state championship.
As we get assembled for the all tournament team announcement, and then of course we will have the trophy presentation coming up.
