And the fourth official, Janice Hefling.
Ladies and gentlemen, it's time to play state championship soccer.
>> Okay, here we go.
What a crowd here at Cownie park for the 3A title match, Valley coming in as the fifth seed overall.
And Bettendorf, let's take a look at their resume.
Their 13th trip overall to State.
They've got an outstanding junior in Carson Bohonek.
She's also got a good running mate in Peyton Markham.
They beat Valley in the first ever state girls sanctioned championship back in '98.
Head coach Allison sany was actually the all tournament team captain, so lots of history with Bettendorf.
But even more history with the Valley Tigers.
Their 21st trip to State, their 10th straight as they go for their 8th state title.
Senior Eleanor Anliker leads the team.
Five other seniors on the squad, plus two injured stars.
Their head coach, Rob Chapman, he's done it all at Valley.
Bettendorf, the Bulldogs come into this one, they put the shellacking on pleasant Valley in the opening round, 7-1, to advance to the semifinals, and then just outlasted Ankeny.
>> When you look at the Bettendorf squad, you've got to watch out for the pace going up front, but I'll tell you what, keys are the back line needs to keep Valley in check, which I think they will do.
Valley have -- they have changed to a 4-4-2, a diamond at the back, just to deal with the pace of Boheck.
>> For the Valley Tigers, they were winners over Lindmor, then they took extra time to take care of top-seeded Waukee northwest.
What do they got to do?
>> Chapman spoke to me about it beforehand.
Bohonek in check all the time.
It's not just her.
>> They're so talented all the way across.
Bettendorf wearing the white uniforms with black numbers.
Valley, wearing all black.
They are designated the home team.
Just your typical 5-7 matchup in the state championship, right?
Parity.
>> Yeah.
We haven't had that for a while, have we?
It's normally the one against five or four with an upset, but credit to these two teams coming into this.
Both very, very physical.
>> And as Valley likes to do, they will look to throw.
They like to strike and strike fast and quick and in a hurry.
They've been here in the state championship before as Bettendorf will try to clear out.
- part of that back wall that has been so good this year at the state tournament.
This one's going to sail out of bounds.
It will be a throw for the Valley Tigers.
>> Tigers starting off, lots of pressure in the Bulldogs half.
This is how they like to start, just set the standard, put a stamp on the game, let the opposition know they're going to -- they're here for this.
They're peaking at the right time as well.
Look at the results they've had coming into this.
>> Markham had control of it for the Bulldogs but lost it.
Out into open space.
And coming up to scoop up the ball is going to be Pascale.
She's going to have her work cut out for her.
She had a dozen saves the other day against Waukee Northwest.
>> That's what it takes.
A goalkeeper, dozen saves, keeps your team in the game.
Goalkeepers can win you championships.
That's what they say about defending, off the ball.
>> Valley, of course, playing back in the state championship game.
Who could forget last year's 3A title match against Johnston?
Dragons winning it 2-1.
Valley on a 1-1 tie thought they were going to get it, went down to PKs.
And the Dragons ended up winning it.
Here's Anliker, the transfer from Dowling catholic, who's been very pivotal this year for the Valley Tigers.
Good battle for the ball.
Tigers will control it.
>> Tahnee Scheuchl, good with the ball at her feet, likes to get the spin out, get the ball in behind.
>> Here's Stone, who will try to clean it up for the Tigers.
Again, Bettendorf holding their ground.
>> Good tackle.
>> Here's Bohonek.
Keep an eye on 19 for the Benteke Bulldogs, who's been dynamic this year with the 43 goals.
Already committed to play at Nebraska.
Anliker, nice little toss ahead.
Over to Scheuchl and a big hit, but it's clean as there was a play on the ball.
>> Solid challenge there on Scheuchl.
Anliker's going to be a key impact player here, delivered the corner for the winning goal against Waukee Northwest.
>> Here's Bohonek.
Trying to make a move.
The shot, blocked.
>> Fantastic block.
>> That's going to be a matchup all day.
Now this one is going to be hauled in by Pascale as giving it a ride was Peyton Markham, the senior for the Bettendorf Bulldogs.
>> The Bulldogs setting the tone now with their strike from Markham, just 25 yards outside the penalty area.
Already, you can see that caution.
Bohonek is going to be a handful.
She prefers the ball in behind, hence the reason why Valley have gone to back four diamond with the sweeper, just to try and deal with her pace.
>> This game, very physical here early on.
Who does -- who has the advantage there, Justin?
>> Well, I would say Bettendorf very direct at the moment.
Great challenge in the penalty area from Lit on Bohonek.
It's going to be a challenge for the two centerbacks, and obviously, Rachel Weirup at left back and Taylor Chapman at right back.
Nora Fogerty, look to get the ball in to Ella Anliker and then into the front two.
>> Here's Bohonek.
She can control it.
That will give it up over to the outside.
Lit will play it back.
Boy, Bettendorf, clicking at the right time, have won 11 straight matches.
There's Bohonek trying to get clear.
Lit, though, has been identified.
Here's Anliker.
All-state tournament team member a year ago, but that was when she was playing for Dowling catholic.
Bettendorf, again, trying to stretch out the field.
>> Valley can't afford to give the ball away in the midfield, because the Bulldogs are very quick on the counterattack.
>> Ball holding steady at midfield.
Again, Bettendorf, right at the right time, right moment.
>> Picking up this second ball in the half turn.
No pressure.
Looks like the Tigers are going to be very, very cautious as we see changes coming in.
>> Morgan Nichols will be coming into the match.
She'll replace Lynch.
Chapman will clear it.
It will be a throw for Bettendorf.
Early on in this one, you see the Bulldogs all lined up underneath the tent, trying to grab some shade.
It is a beautiful afternoon here at Cownie Park here on June 1st.
Bohonek trying to get free.
It's up and in, a goal for Bohonek!
>> My word.
How dynamic is Bohonek?
First goal.
We spoke about her, driving into the penalty area, drifting past the centerbacks.
Unbelievable finish.
Finishing on the near post, questions answered by the goalkeeper, Amanda Pascale, but there was so much power in that, it could only be Perried off her left hand into the back of the net.
What a goal.
>> So, Bettendorf strikes first.
Bohonek at 33:14 here to play in the first half gets her second attempt on net and cashes in.
Valley, they've played from behind already in this tournament, and that was in the semifinals yesterday.
They had a real struggle actually getting here to the state tournament in the regional final against Urbandale.
Took everything they had.
They closed and scored in the final half of that matchup against Urbandale to prevail.
Anliker will track it on down for the Tigers.
Bettendorf, terrific defense on her.
Destiny Borland forces the issue.
>> Great pressure there.
As you said, Borland, getting stuck in.
Cover was there as well.
And that's what it's going to be.
Anliker, she's a key player for the Tigers.
The transfer from Dowling catholic.
>> So, Bettendorf trying to go on the go.Catholic.
>> So, Bettendorf trying to go on the go.
Kelsi Smith will throw.
Bettendorf, slowing working the ball up the field.
That's where you would like to go as Bohonek -- and Valley will get it back here.
>> Out of your picture, just down that passage of play there, couldn't see it, but in the midfield, Gonzalez-Hayes and Peyton Markham staying really tight, touch tight to the two central midfielders for Valley.
>> Now Smith.
Again, Bettendorf up 1-0, Bohonek already with a goal, her 44th on the season, her third here at the state tournament.
And she is everything she has been built up to be is Carson Bohonek, the junior.
This will stay with Bettendorf.
Find Bohonek in space, drawing the assignment that time is Cockrum, which this is going to be just wide as it's deflected away, and it will be a corner kick here coming up for Bettendorf.
How about the quick strike?
>> From distance as well, spinning, turning, cutting into the central areas there.
Under pressure.
What a save there by Pascale.
She had to get the right hand to it.
>> And the corner played up.
It will be a goal kick here for the Valley Tigers.
So, Pascale, already under duress.
>> Yeah.
The first goal, difficult one to deal with.
I mean, if the defenders couldn't deal with Bohonek, she was just so quick.
She just pile drives through everyone.
Getting that ball across defenders, but oh, that save, Pascale.
Boost of confidence as well.
>> Going to be a foot race to the ball.
Just tracking off down into the corner.
Tries to play to Smith, Anliker will knock it out.
>> Anliker did well just to get across there.
She does put in a shift, but you can see now how deep she is into the half.
The two forwards for Valley just staying up front, pinned up against the centerback, the sub coming in for Stone.
Clarification on that.
>> So far in this, Justin, Ella Anliker has had to play a lot more defense than offense.
>> Yeah, you know, she'll do the job, but you don't want Anliker that far back.
You need her a little bit higher up as an outlet.
>> Terrific move as Valley, able to fend it off.
We mentioned it's going to be physical today.
And certainly has been in the early goings.
>> That was critical.
A critical tackle on stiles-Pena.
She was lining up the strike there.Stiles-Pena.
She was lining up the strike there.
>> Out into space here for the Valley Tigers.
Scheuchl trying to bring it forward.
Scheuchl, the block put on by Kelsi Smith.
>> Scheuchl, a little bit with a strike.
>> And a play, clean tackle, put together by Bettendorf.
Anliker to the outside.
Weirup.
Cockrum couldn't get square with it, and Bettendorf, back in the possession.
>> That's Kental for the Tigers up front, replacing Stone.
>> Lit.
Bohonek.
Bohonek, able to steal that one away, and look out.
Goes back left to her right, a swim kick.
Going to be hauled in by Pascale.
>> You don't have a chance to breathe.
She's on you, body across the defender.
Shielding the ball, quick turn.
>> Usually, it is Valley that comes out and tries to strike quick, but today, it has been Bettendorf who's really put some muscle into this.
Goal kick here for the Tigers.
>> Carson Bohonek as well can strike the ball with both feet.
>> Bettendorf to their bench.
Coming in is going to be Haley Engels, the freshman.
Coach Sanyi said, you know, they've got somewhat of a younger group, but she said the freshmen are really pushing the upper classmen, and we've seen that throughout the season.
Who's this going to be out on?
Valley.
>> You can see the aggressiveness all the way through the Bulldogs team.
Every single player, pressing.
They're physical.
They'll get stuck in.
But it's not just one or two.
It's the whole team, even the players coming in off the bench.
>> Tough play in the middle.
Engels was trying to work with it, Valley, just trying to get it cleared, and they do for the moment.
Stiles-Pena to lit.
VAEM out into space, the header ahead.
And coming up, just trying to be active, is Riley Sweetland.
She spent most of the time this season with Annie Kilstrom, but at the state tournament, Sweetland got the nod and has made the most of it.
>> Kendall Pietzsch.
Ball played in.
That was a good flick on.
Got to get the runner off the ball.
>> Valley will go to their bench.
Evelyn Rubino, the sophomore, will come in.
In fact, she had a late switch to her position, moved from offense to defense in the regional final against Urbandale, so they're just trying to get fresh bodies in that back line.
>> You'll find they'll rotate the outside backs, the left back, right back.
They'll keep the two centerbacks there the whole game unless they get injured, Dakota Cockrum, and let their job is mainly Bohonek.
>> So, Bettendorf striking already.
In case you're joining us late.
Just about seven minutes into the contest, Carson Bohonek scored her 44th goal of the season.
And she has actually outshot the Valley Tigers on net.
Just herself.
Here's Anliker.
Gives it a whirl.
It's good!
Wow!
Anliker with the right foot ties this one up at one.
>> The chance, the one chance, the first chance for Valley Tigers, and what a strike.
You give Anliker space anywhere around the penalty area like that, she will crack the ball.
But look at the swerve, the dip that just went over the goalkeeper, Sweetland.
Look at that drive.
Unbelievable.
There was pressure.
Look at that swag from Anliker.
Good passing.
Again, look at the technique, getting her hips round the ball.
Absolutely fantastic.
>> The northern Iowa recruit with her 20th goal of the season.
She also wrestles at Valley, can tell a lot of grit, determination, and struck the ball hard for that goal to tie this one up at 1-1.
We got ourselves a title match here on Iowa PBS with Justin, BJ, along with the crew here as this is game number two of our triple header.
Earlier today, Nevada, a winner over Denver, 2-0, to win their school's first ever state title.
We've got the 2A championship match coming up later at 5:30, the start, as north Polk and Dallas center Grimes will go at it, north Polk trying to win their school's first ever title.
Dallas Center Grimes trying to threepeat.
That will be the 2A title game coming up at 5:30.
So, the sun out, and we get a whistle.
That will be a penalty on Valley.
Free kick here coming up from the outer right.
>> Prior to that, Pietzsch, she has to get home, the right back came in and won the ball.
She was square, gets side on, shoulder on, check your shoulder, you got to see where press is coming.
It's resulted in a free kick now for the Bulldogs.
>> Peyton Markham, who leads the team in assists, actually set a school record.
Thing to keep in mind on her is she'll put it right on the mark.
This one, not so much.
>> It was interesting for Markham.
She lined it up on her left foot, then round to her right foot.
>> Tigers soaked up some pressure, rewarded with a goal.
Goals coming ten minutes apart.
>> This is similar to last year's state title match with Johnston and Valley.
Team jumped out to an early lead, quickly answered moment later.
And then, we were deadlocked the rest of the way into overtime.
All the way down to PKs.
>> Kelsi Smith, left back.
That's great skill there in the corner.
>> Here's Smith with the blast.
Trying to get it to the interior to Markham, denied by Valley.
Tigers, trying to clear it.
This is where they've been good, stretching out the field.
And now they've got some maneuvers.
The Tigers, not to be denied, left open in the middle.
Collision.
No whistle.
We'll play on.
>> That's what you'll get from Eleanor Stone.
Very creative on the touch, crafty.
Look at the combination she played there with Pietzsch.
Appeals for a foul at the edge of the penalty box.
>> Now the throw for the Tigers.
They go towards the middle.
Lit will blast it back.
>> This time, she didn't take a touch.
>> And now, we have a stoppage.
This will be our water break.
The sun is out.
The temperature has risen.
We'll have our first water break as you're watching the class 3A state championship here from Cownie Park in Des Moines here on Iowa PBS.
>>> It's a 1-1 tie here in the class 3A state championship as we hope that you're enjoying our coverage here on Iowa PBS free and statewide coverage.
Can't beat it here on the opening day of June, right in the central part of the state.
Bettendorf struck first with Bohonek with her 44th goal of the season.
Ella Anliker came right back for the Valley Tigers ten minutes later to tie this one up at 1-1.
>> Two key players, each team coming up with the goals.
>> Markham.
Markham trying to go with the quick strike to Bohonek, who's off in the corner.
She'll touch the ball and look out.
Here's a big deep strike, can't get the bend, so it will be a goal kick coming up for the Valley Tigers.
>> Valley want Bohonek out in the wide areas like she was, but still, she finds space to cut in on her right foot, low center of gravity, drops her shoulder very quick, ball sticks to her foot, gets a cross in, but nobody there.
I would rather have Bohonek in the penalty area.
That's where she'll be dangerous.
However, we've seen her all over the place right now, and she's dangerous there too.
>> These two schools have played each other twice in the state final.
Each have won a state championship.
Tigers, of course, won their last title back in 2021, playing in their 12th state championship.
They've won seven.
All under the direction of Rob Chapman.
There's a lofty strike, too much on it.
Tigers just trying to direct it towards the net as Katelyn Lynch gave it a ride.
There's a look at the Valley Tiger bench.
Chapman A long-time coach for Valley, all the state appearances, 17 of them, have come under Chappy.
Of course, gets the honor of coaching his daughter.
Interesting conversation with him the other day.
I said, what's it like to coach your daughter all the way through?
Chappy, being Chappy, said, there's good times and bad times, but overall, it's been a blessing.
>> He's not shy to share his opinion, that's for sure.
>> And the interesting thing was, his daughter, Taylor, was sitting right next to him while we were having this conversation.
She didn't bat an eye, and actually carries a lot of her dad's personality.
Here's Anliker.
Got tied up for the moment.
Valley trying to stretch it out at midfield.
That's where Bettendorf has been really strong here in this match.
But it's been a while, and not as often finding Bohonek.
They're going to try to find her right now.
She's had tough defense on her as Bohonek tries to steal the ball away from lit.
Lot of pressure on it by Bohonek.
Now, Valley will have to throw it in.
>> Dakota Cockrum thought she had a free kick there.
Lit did well as Bohonek closed down, just drove the ball in too early.
>> Anliker keeps that in.
And is it will be whistle.
Well, don't miss a minute of today's championship action.
You can catch the livestream on Facebook, X, YouTube, and IowaPBS.org.
Again, free, and we hope you're enjoying it.
It's a beautiful day and great competition here at the Iowa High School athletic state championships.
With Justin, BJ along with you on a sun-splashed afternoon in the capital city.
Valley Tigers will get an opportunity here with a deep throw as Bettendorf will go back to their bench.
So will Valley.
Checking on for the Bulldogs, it will be Riley.
This throw, in traffic.
Bohonek, look at her muscle the ball.
Lit will clear it right back, though, for Valley.
>> That's the distance I was talking about.
Cockrum picking up touch tight.
>> It is physical and a penalty will be called here on the Valley Tigers.
>> Spoke about how physical this game could be, but going back to Cockrum just picking up Bohonek and then lit's just going to be dropped off eight to ten yards in case she spins out, picks up the ball, just the loose ball.
But the problem is if Cockrum's -- doesn't get too tight, Bohonek with the right touch, she has the pace to go one V. One and beat you.
>> Great play, avoiding the corner was lit, just to track that ball down.
That's where Bettendorf has been dangerous here at the state tournament, has been on those corners.
Lit with the extra hustle there.
And this is going to go against Bettendorf.
A Bulldogs team that coach Sanyi said, we had been playing clean all year, two yellow cards coming into the state tournament.
In the semifinals a couple days ago against Ankeny, they racked up five yellow cards.
Just the style of play.
But she said her team has adapted to that physical style.
>> Yeah, I mean, you can see it right here.
They're fair but physical.
Nothing malicious.
The Ankeny game, Ankeny have some players as well that are very quick, they are physical, they'll close you down, and in the semifinals, heated moments, all at stake for a final, the game can change.
You're fighting for it.
>> And by the way, yellow cards, unlike college or professional, they do not carry over.
You could go both ways with that, right?
>> Yeah.
>> Positive or negative.
>> I think it would be good to have an accumulation at state.
Here goes Anliker.
>> Another deep kick played to the middle.
The collision, and it stays away from traffic, but let's check on Riley Sweetland.
She is slow to get up as coming in on the ball.
>> Look at that ball.
That crossed there from Anliker.
Perfect.
Brave goal keeping.
Both players are brave.
Luckily, no one's hurt.
>> Olivia Rotich able to get up.
It will be a corner kick for the Tigers.
Rotich, okay as well, along with Sweetland.
Here's the corner kick from foggerty.
As the sun comes out, the heat comes up.
We had our first water break of the day, and now each coach, making some tactical changes, getting some fresh legs in there.
Coming back in is going to be Scheuchl.
>> Straight into the mix.
>> Here's Fogerty with a right foot to the top.
Good defense by the Bettendorf Bulldogs as Martens was able to knock it away.
The shot, Sweetland with the save.
What an unbelievable, climbing the ladder there for Riley Sweetland to deny the ball.
>> Two moments there for Sweetland, but look at this.
What a great ball played in.
Under pressure, challenges going in there.
She did so well.
Luckily, the second one was cleared.
You have to be brave.
Sweetland, a brave goalkeeper, standing her ground there.
As Scheuchl was lurking in the challenge.
>> The sophomore coming off of what her coach said was her best game of the year against Ankeny.
That was in the semifinals.
This one going to be played up.
Bettendorf.
>> Ava Hall with a header.
Nice and brave.
>> The spacing has tightened up, Bettendorf trying to go to the outside here.
Stiles.
>> Stiles coming to the left-hand side.
Bohonek going more central.
They rotate all the time.
>> Here's Bohonek.
The strike, just to the left.
>> Bohonek, again, same movement, she did that earlier on, cutting in on to her right foot, fakes the challenge.
Cockrum did well to not go into the fake.
But that's where the cover needs to come in for Valley Tigers.
They need cover.
As soon as she turns in, someone from the midfield, Ava Hall, someone needs to come in and cover that.
>> Bettendorf with Smith out ahead to Markham.
We've played out well, defended on the play by Ava Hall.
>> Tigers need to get someone in front of Bohonek.
You see her coming there.
>> Pascale will find it.
Stays with Valley.
Inside of 9:45 to play here in the opening half.
What a half it's been.
And again, mirror images of and similar type of situations to what we saw in last year's 3A title match.
Bevy of activity early on, both teams then settling in.
Quite the match.
>> As per last year as well, both back lines staying tight after conceding goals.
It was all Bulldogs in the first 20 minutes.
>> Stiles-Pena able to clear out.
It's a foot race to the ball with her and lit.
To the middle.
>> Dakota Cockrum, fantastic cover there.
Lit, covering ground, getting across.
Bohonek was off to the races.
>> End-to-end action in the middle.
Here's Anliker.
Well defended by Borland.
Little lob.
Sweetland on a hop.
Little bit of a tricky hop.
>> Martens and Borland both got their hands full with Anliker, Scheuchl.
>> Bohonek.
Just couldn't quite keep up with the ball.
Anliker.
Going to go outside here to Scheuchl.
Scheuchl trying to get the official involved and will get a whistle here.
Penalty on Bettendorf.
>> So far, the officiating's been very good.
>> Consistent.
>> Yeah.
>> I mean, it's been physical, but not to the point where somebody's gaining a huge advantage.
>> Yeah, and you know what's nice is the officials have let the play go on.
It's been fair with the challenges.
It's a top ball there.
>> Okay, call the drop ball, because it did touch the official.
This is very similar, for you basketball fans, as a jump ball on a tie-up.
>> It's who had possession.
So, whoever had possession, it's their ball.
So, now, it's going back.
So, that's -- >> Rob Chapman came up to one of the side officials and said, that has to be our ball, and there will be no drop ball.
It will be Valley's on a free kick here.
>> Yep.
Just drop it.
Drop ball for Valley, because they were in possession of the ball.
>> Sweetland will go to her right to make a play.
>> And that's why Sara curry has the help of Laura Anderson, the fourth, Emily Phillips, and Milley Phillips, mother-daughter.
>> Good battle between Scheuchl and Smith, won over by Bettendorf.
Markham.
Again, just trying to find space, but as this first half has worn on, you can start to see some legs get a little tired.
>> Yeah, and I think the best chance is, I mean, obviously, the Bulldogs have had chances, but there's been some very good chances at the other end.
Anliker with the deliveries, scored the first goal, but earlier on, the two challenges on the goalkeeper, Riley Sweetland, who did extremely well and was brave.
>> That's going to be wide left.
Goalkeeper here for the Valley Tigers.
>> That's okay because shoot pressure.
Peyton Markham taking her chances.
>> Interesting story for Markham, set the school record for assists, certainly loads of talent, but this is going to be it for her for soccer.
She wants to go be a student, going to study nursing down at the university of Southern Florida.
So, quite adaptive to the temperatures that we have today.
That's going to be out.
And let's see.
Goal kick here for Bettendorf.
>> Stone coming into the game.
She's now sitting a little bit deeper in the midfield, together with Anliker, and then you've got Ava Hall is the sixth, so you've got the eight tens in front of her as we call them sometimes.
Very, very narrow, rather than wide.
Handball there.
And then up front, you've got the power of Scheuchl and Pietzsch.
>> This will go to the Valley Tigers with a throw.
Anliker looking for the ball throws to Scheuchl off in the corner.
>> Scheuchl earning a team throw-in near touch side.
Deep inside the Bulldogs half.
>> Now shone.
The blast is going to be wide right.
>> Leaning away from the ball, quickly tracks back into position as well.
>> Now, Sweeney.
This is a dangerous part of the game when you're closing in on the half.
And not trying to give an advantage to your opponent while also trying to be aggressive.
How do you coach that, Justin?
>> It's motivation right now, just get the players in to halftime.
Chapman does make the changes.
He's always rotating fresh legs in, but it's the players that are being consistently in there.
Now, we're talking about the two centerbacks there for the Tigers.
Dealing with ever so present Bohonek.
>> And we'll see a free kick, a penalty here on Bettendorf.
>> Earned by Eleanor Stone.
>> The challenge put on by Alma Gonzalez-Hayes.
Little too fierce.
>> I like Stone in the central areas where she can create.
She likes to combine.
She'll look up.
She'll combine with the two highest forwards in the 4-4-2 system that the Tigers are playing, and Scheuchl and Pietzsch.
>> See, Valley will take their time on the throw.
>> Everywhere Bohonek goes out of your picture, you've got two players.
You've got Cockrum and Lit on her.
>> Snow with the hard tackle.
>> I thought that would be a foul.
>> She wears number 76 and has had it in club ball for -- ever since she was little and never gave up that number.
Not many people are clamoring to wear number 76, right?
>> No, no, there's no players coming in tearing the walls down for number 76.
Ten's the normal number.
>> Coach Sanyi said that was an easy one to give up, no battle, but has worn it with pride.
We've got nearly over a minute left and they're a little bit slow to get up, and she may be injured.
She's trying to walk it off here.
>> Snow, the right back.
Had a busy game but played well.
>> Trying to stretch out that left leg.
Now we'll have a whistle.
Subs will come in.
54 seconds to play.
In the half.
There is an adjustment on the clock.
>> Looks like it's going to be a free kick.
As you can see, some conversations going there on the far side.
>> That's coach Sanyi right in your screen for Bettendorf, talking it over with the official.
Now here's Elan Litt.
>> She sees the funny side of it as well in the end.
>> I think, like a conversation right in the middle of a state championship match.
All smiles break out, which is good.
Ball played up in the air.
Scheuchl on the outside.
Challenged by Snow.
That first half clock, winding down.
Valley, trying to strike here in the closing minute.
Out into space.
Anliker with the strike, but the block, put together by Bettendorf, and it will be a corner kick with about 20 seconds to go in the half.
Anliker's going to have to set and go and will.
Just calls for it right now.
Closing seconds of the half.
Anliker just could not get square with the ball.
It tailed to her right, and that should be tend of the first half.
But what a half.
The stars have really come out to play here on the 3A championship match as Bohonek and Anliker, the two stars for each squad, showing their offensive firepower as we have a 1-1 tie here in the 3A title match as you're watching it here on Iowa PBS.
>>> Iowa life is a new program on Iowa PBS that tackles the diverse cultures of Iowa's people and stories.
Let's look at another statewide competition where students show off their culinary, management, and cake decorating skills.
>>> It's a 1-1 match here in the 3A championship title bout as West Des Moines Valley and Bettendorf, about ready to begin the second half.
With Justin Vorster, I'm B.J.
Schaben, and in the first half, we saw a lot of action, but defenses are starting to gain hold.
>> Yeah, it's about doing a job on Bohonek but not just her, the whole front line.
Anliker, Pietzsch, they've all been a problem for Bettendorf.
It's going to be exciting.
>> Here's the first half highlights, the block put together.
Defense has been sound for Bettendorf.
And then, you've got Bohonek with the first goal of the match, and Anliker, quick strike, finding the upper corner to tie this one at one apiece is where we're at in the 3A title match.
Bettendorf trying to win their school's second ever state championship.
You look at the first half statistics.
The Bulldogs have actually outshot Valley 7-5, each team with two corners and the penalties, pretty even, right at three apiece as we're ready to get the second half under way as it's championship Saturday here at Cownie Park in Des Moines.
Hope you're enjoying the coverage on Iowa PBS.
We've got one more championship coming up.
It's in class 2A at 5:30, the start.
Dallas Center grams trying to go for a threepeat, taking on North Polk.
Earlier today, Nevada winning their school's first-ever title with a 2-0 decision over Denver.
Valley, trying to force the tempo here.
From the outside, it will be a corner kick here coming up for the Valley Tigers.
>> Kelsi Smith just did enough.
However, going out for a corner on the far side.
>> Nora Fogarty, the junior, ready to go.
Has three assists on the season.
Big moment early on.
Anliker trying to go get it, trying to put her head on it, but how about Riley Sweetland?
Strong hands, hauling that one in.
Big smile breaks out.
>> Yeah, massive confidence booster there.
Just for the start of the second half.
Riley Sweetland just coming out, plucking the ball from the sky.
>> Bohonek with the pass ahead.
Now to Markham, back to Bettendorf.
Going to try to go to Bohonek.
She's got space.
This is where she's dangerous.
Bohonek with the strike.
Too much on it.
Might have been the train whistle that threw her off a little bit.
There is that, you know, roughly 3:35 Charlie that goes through here, and of course, sometimes it can throw you off.
Sometimes it can't, but that's -- it's a nice park, the aesthetics here at Cownie Park.
>> You've got to get your timing right when you're coming into James Cownie soccer complex, especially with that train and especially when it's three miles long.
>> Blocking all those late-arriving Tiger fans trying to come in here.
>> I know.
There's a couple of players out here that are, like, trains just going down the track.
>> Penalty called here on the Valley Tigers.
It will be a free kick here for Bettendorf.
How about the arrival of these two squads getting police escorts when they entered city limits?
The big strike from way out by Markham.
Not there.
>> Good strike, just going off to the goalkeeper.
Pascale's left upright.
Both teams starting well here in the second half.
>> Pascale, who had all sorts of dressed, seven shots on goal, only gave up one.
I mean, allowed her team to take a deep breath after falling down 1-0.
>> Good pressure there from Stone.
Lot of people don't recognize what's done off the ball, the press, earning a team a corner, throw-in far side.
Put pressure on Kelsi Smith.
I have noticed that Bohonek has shifted a little more to the right-hand side, and right now, she's shifted more central, obviously, because the ball's on the far side.
>> Stiles-Pena and Bohonek will go track it on down.
It will be a throw here for Bettendorf.
And an easy play for Pascale.
>> That was easy.
Bohonek should have looked to try to deliver the ball into the far post on her right foot.
She could have bent the ball into the far side in the red zone in the half space area.
I did like her in the beginning when she started on the right, has put pressure on the left back for Valley, showed her strength and power getting past her in the early stages of the second half.
Now move more to the central left-hand side.
>> Valley with the throw.
>> Chapman down the field.
Terrific play on the ball for the Valley Tigers.
>> Martens does enough there.
Scheuchl, turning in to pressure.
She could have turned out there.
Starting position there of Martens was very good.
Goal side.
Again, that's Martens.
>> Go to Bettendorf, free kick.
Little bit too high and hard there by Ava Hall.
>> 1-1 game as we're into the second half of the 3A title match.
>> Every player picked up on that free kick except for two spare, and that was Litt and Cockrum.
>> Scheuchl just lost her footing but able to regain control of the ball.
Valley, trying to go with a burst.
That's Hall down the field, and it will be hauled in by Sweetland.
>> Ava Hall, the holding midfielder, picking up the pieces, striking the ball with the right foot, Riley Sweetland just guiding that into her arms.
>> Valley, a winner against Lindmar in the opening round here at the state tournament.
Lindmar, the last team to beat Bettendorf, which was about midway through the season.
Bulldogs have won 11 in a row.
Coach Sanyi will go to her bench.
Coming into the match is going to be Addison Woelfel, a freshman.
Again, just looking for, I guess, some fresh legs here for Bettendorf.
Here's Litt.
stop.
It's not thunder on a partly cloudy day here in Des Moines.
>> We all felt that one, didn't we?
>> Sure did.
Here's Scheuchl.
Oh, just lost track of the ball.
And it will stay -- no, it's off of Valley, so it will go to Bettendorf.
>> Ava Williams, busy out there with Scheuchl, doing a good job.
Martens clearing the lines, just doing enough, doing what's needed at this point.
>> Valley going to their bench.
Summer Scheuchl into the contest.
She'll replace Nora Fogarty.
Chapman with a nice play on the ball.
He works his goalies.
>> Litt did well there.
Carson Bohonek.
>> Scheuchl to the middle.
Ball left out in space.
>> Up with a lovely ball in.
>> And the kick to the net knocked away by Sweetland, and she's standing on her head.
Wow, what a play by the goalie.
>> Eleanor stern, right place, right time.
Weirup, missed there.
What a save by Riley Sweetland.
Had to get across, both hands to the ball.
>> Now they have to defend the corner.
Anliker.
Left it towards the post.
Bettendorf, able to clear it out.
Anliker.
Boy, the Bulldogs are scrapping, trying to turn it into some momentum.
Markham out ahead, look out.
Bohonek gets free.
The shot, and it's in!
>> The counterattack from a corner.
Stone nearly scored.
Sweetland, to the rescue.
The counterattack, the pressure on Anliker by that girl, Carson Bohonek.
Ball goes forward.
There she is again.
Look at this.
Great piece of skill going the opposite side of Cockrum.
There was no doubt when she beat Cockrum here.
Great skill.
It was going to be a goal.
Enough power in it to beat Pascale.
>> Bohonek with her second goal, her fourth of the state tournament.
Her 45th on the season and puts her team out in front again, 2-1 on the Valley Tigers.
>> Bohonek scored in the seventh minute of the first half, tenth minute of the second half.
>> Does Valley have an answer?
Scheuchl out ahead.
Little too much on it and wide right.
Goal kick here for the Bulldogs.
So, Valley, back to their bench.
Eleanor Stone back into the game.
Valley trying to increase the pressure here, but it was a breakaway, and how about that?
The assist for Peyton Markham, another assist for her, to find Bohonek.
>> Markham, racking up the assists.
>> That defense, just too tough by Bettendorf.
They've got the advantage, 2-1.
Bohonek with the speed.
Can she get the hat trick?
Here's the shot, and it's blocked by Litt.
>> Litt and Cockrum, caught square for the first time.
But look at this.
Bohonek, Bohonek, oh, what a tackle.
What a block.
Unbelievable.
Came flying in there.
This is commitment.
The goalkeeper as well, diving.
>> Now, Bettendorf with the corner.
This is Gonzalez-Hayes.
A header back out.
Bettendorf trying to keep it inside of the zone.
Litt with the high kick that missed.
Now pushes it down the field.
Bettendorf with two back.
With that one-goal lead, Bettendorf with four defensemen back.
Anliker out ahead.
Valley, trying to find an opening.
Clean play on the ball.
Put together by Gonzalez-Hayes.
>> Ava Williams, again, good defending out there on the far touch line, doing her job, given her role, earning her team a goal kick here, but that block, could that be a game-changing factor later on?
It's end-to-end right now.
Here's Bohonek.
Again, great move, trying to find space, a centering pass goes wide of the mark.
>> Bohonek shifting of the hips, cutting the ball.
>> Here's a play to the middle.
Would have been waved off regardless.
>> Bohonek just cutting the ball perfectly from her right foot to her left foot, the shift of hips, the speed of actions.
She's now getting into situations where it's one V. One.
I did speak about how dangerous she would be with the ball played in behind, running at you.
It's the last thing that centerbacks want, chasing.
>> Goal kick from the Valley Tigers.
Anliker, battling.
Trying to find it out into space.
Valley with the possession from the side.
The header towards the net.
And Scheuchl just too much on it.
>> Great, great delivery into the penalty area.
Scheuchl, going up for the challenge.
>> Katelyn Lynch will re-enter the match.
>> Rachel Weirup was coming in at the far post.
communicating, but she was running on to the ball.
Would have been perfect for her if Scheuchl had left the ball.
>> The throw by Rubino.
Coming near the midway point of the late half.
Valley, again.
Just get it in for ball placement.
Bettendorf is -- I mean, this is pretty savvy.
Litt from way up top.
>> Bettendorf is so quick on the counterattack, and scoring the second goal on the counterattack.
>> Here is a shot.
Sweetland says, no.
>> Kendall Pietzsch catching that on the half volley.
Sweetland, positioning was perfect.
>> Here come the Bulldogs, Markham out ahead.
>> Bettendorf shooting it to the outside.
Stiles-Pena, battling.
It will go to Valley.
>> Good pressure there from Chapman.
Correct me on that.
Rubino.
>> Well, we're just playing in space right now is what we're seeing.
Scheuchl.
Nobody home to receive that pass.
>> Lynch was checking into the central area there.
She would prefer it at her feet.
>> Now, Anliker looks to go.
Sends it deep.
>> The combination was on.
Anliker had support in front of her with Pietzsch.
>> Bohonek, the quick toss, and the hat trick!
>> Absolutely sublime.
Magical.
>> Valley is saying Bohonek may have given an extra shove.
Let's take a look, but regardless, there's no call.
We play on, and Bohonek gets the hat trick.
>> Look at this.
Outside of the right foot, great technique into the opposite corner.
Bottom corner of Amanda Pascale's net.
>> 3-1, Bettendorf.
>> Bohonek with the hat trick.
We spoke about how dangerous she would be.
Just catching the Tigers' back line.
Often, that's all it takes.
>> And everyone at the state tournament has said Bohonek is something special and proves it night in, night out.
We mentioned already heading to the University of Nebraska.
Has one more year at Bettendorf, but what a tournament.
Five goals, three today.
>> The technique -- again, we talk about restricting the amount of space in behind you where she can spin and work off shoulders.
She's a finisher, proven today with the three goals.
>> Each team going to their bench here again.
>> Two goals in it.
Still lots of time.
We'll have the water break and then 20 minutes to go, and I'm sure Chapman will be revving his troops up for the last 20 minutes.
Be putting the fire into them and keep them going and motivated.
Takes impactful players in the team, and you look at Anliker.
You've got Scheuchl and Pietzsch up front.
Can Eleanor Stone create something out of nothing?
Score a goal, you're back 3-2.
Another one, 3-3.
>> Trying to switch that momentum around is the Valley Tigers.
>> Valley with the attempt to the middle.
>> That's actually a good ball, entry ball in there from Eleanor Stone.
She does well here to win it back.
>> Nobody home again in the middle.
>> Needs more movement off the ball.
I see Litt's moved up front as well.
>> And easily played by Sweetland.
>> You see that change from Chapman.
Litt, now in a more forward role, nothing to lose.
She's got a bit of pace.
>> Again, 3-1, two goals already here in the late half by Bettendorf.
All goes by Bohonek.
If you're just joining us late, Bettendorf, trying to win their first state title since 1998, and now we have our water break.
So, 20 minutes remain in the 3A state championship, and the Bulldogs are trying to stake claim to the title.
Can they fend off Valley?
We'll find out when the stretch run, we'll have it when we return.
>>> Here we go, the final 20 as we just completed or second half water break.
20 minutes to play, 3-1, Bettendorf with the advantage on Valley.
Well, you can relive the excitement of the championship, share these moments with your family, friends, and neighbors.
Visit IowaPBS.org for archives of championship games any time.
With Justin Vorster, B.J.
Schaben along with you.
The Bulldogs, again, with Bohonek and her play, a hat trick today.
They lead it 3-1, but what can Valley do to get into this?
>> Well, they can push more players forward.
Keep players into the game for longer periods as they earn a free kick.
>> Oh, this is a golden opportunity, and hold the phone.
Hold the cake.
>> Don't put any cake around me, B.J.
There won't be any left after the next 20 minutes.
>> It's being marked in, and how about this?
>> Ten yards, yep.
I think it was a handball.
>> Correct.
Here's Anliker.
Key moment here for Valley if they want to come back.
Anliker towards the net, deflected away by the Bulldogs.
>> Very good header, cleared by the Bulldogs.
And that was a critical clearance.
>> They're going to say Bettendorf is going to get this.
Initially signalled to Valley.
Now here goes the Tigers with the throw.
This is Weirup.
From the net, Pascale.
>> Ava Hall under pressure, dispossessed, good clearance there at the back by Cockrum.
She's on her own now with Bohonek.
>> And Bohonek drawing three black jerseys.
Valley, able to hold the issue.
>> Good cover from Rubino to the right-hand side of Cockrum.
Did enough to clear her lines, because now, Litt, who has now pushed further up the field in a more midfield role, inverted in the central area.
She used to play out wide in the 4-3-3 on the left-hand side.
>> Now Litt.
Possession to Valley.
Anliker in space.
The deep shot.
>> Someone's got to show feet.
Someone's got to combine Anliker.
She'll be demanding that.
That has got to be a heck of a strike from there.
Sweetland is a good goalkeeper.
Yes, she's been beaten once by Anliker.
It was a closer range just inside the penalty area to the right-hand side, right type of strike, but that is some distance.
That looked like a late challenge on Rubino.
>> We'll stay with Bettendorf.
Bohonek off into the corner.
Just no movement forward here for Valley.
Bettendorf, you've got Bohonek.
You've got Markham.
They know how to control the front line.
The back line doing their job now here in the second half.
>> It's about managing the game now for the next 16 minutes.
Playing it safe.
Nothing silly, nothing too risky.
>> Here's Bohonek in space.
Stays in play.
Hard tackle.
>> At this point, that's all you can do with Bohonek.
Bring her down.
But her tendency, when she has her back to goal, back to play, on the far side on the left, her tendency is always to turn left inside on to her right foot.
She's done it every single time.
Cover hasn't come across, but it's hard to defend, because she can also use her left foot, so she might swivel you the other way.
It's really difficult.
There's no cover, and that's what they need.
>> The lob to the net.
Little too strong on the kick.
This will be a goal kick here for the Valley Tigers.
>> Dangerous delivery there from Markham.
>> Allison Sanyi, the head coach for the Bettendorf Bulldogs.
The last time the Bulldogs won a state championship, she was playing for Bettendorf, and that was back in 1998, and she said, you know what?
Players today have it a little easier.
Back then, in '98, they open it up, played on Friday, played their semifinal on Saturday morning, and then their state championship that afternoon.
And you want to talk about endurance.
You certainly would have that today.
Of course, with the spacing out of games, you play on Tuesday, you play on Thursday, and of course, you're playing here on championship Saturday, which is what everybody wants to do.
But talk about iron man soccer.
That would have been it.
>> That's injuries waiting to happen.
I don't know how they used to do it back in those days.
>> Travel to Muscateen, play there.
>> I didn't realize it was semifinals and finals on the same day.
>> She made a point to point that out to us.
She said, you know what?
The conditioning is a whole lot better now too.
>> The high school girls association have done a great job, obviously, managing it over the years, and we used to go Friday and Saturday.
Now, there's a day off.
>> Valley trying to find that extra gear here, inside of 14 minutes to play.
Of course, this is the third time these two schools have met in the championship.
Bettendorf won in '98.
The Tigers won the next time they met, and now here we are in 2024.
Of course, the way the tournament is spread out, depending on how you look at it, economically friendly.
Bettendorf has traveled back and forth from the capital city back home after each game.
The players don't like that.
They want to stay in a hotel.
However -- >> Budget requirements don't allow it.
>> Right.
That extra day.
There's always that fuel price.
>> That too as well.
>> So, Valley, again, trying to find their footing here.
Rubino with the toss.
Field getting stretched out here as Snow will do the throw.
There's a shot that goes wide.
>> Tough challenge there put on Peyton Markham.
>> It will be a free kick coming up here for Valley.
Beg your pardon.
On the throws, it's out of bounds.
>> Borland now just containing Anliker at this point.
As you can see, she has a close eye on her as well.
>> That will be hauled in by Sweetland.
Think about it.
We've seen so much parity here at the state soccer tournament this year.
>> Yeah, absolutely.
I mean, every single game.
>> All about matchups, and look who's lurking, Bohonek.
Bohonek in space.
Oh, and kicked right back as Shaffer had that go off her chin.
>> Schaefer thought this was going to be the magic moment to get the fourth.
Cockrum, clearing her lines.
>> Bohonek and the keeper way out as Bohonek will give away to Woelfel.
Now the shot, and Pascale nabs it as Borland gave it a ride.
>> Snow, battling.
Valley, trying to put together a fight.
We've got ten minutes to play.
>> Just two goals in it.
We've seen games change before.
Seen good changes coming in, attacking changes I see with Pietzsch coming in and Stone.
>> Obviously, Valley wanting to put more pressure offensively on.
Is this the time?
>> Yes.
You know, I think he's doing it at the right time.
He's got to take the risk.
It's only two goals.
Obviously, he's been very cautious of we-know-who up front for the Bulldogs.
If it's a time to score, this would be a time to score.
Set pieces, I think, is what they're looking for, and I think they just earned another throw-in.
They're looking for corners, because that's where they're dangerous.
>> Here's Anliker.
Scheuchl.
The deep blast blocked by Bettendorf.
The attempt just flied left.
Valley had an -- I mean, better than average look at it, just couldn't cut the corner that time for Cockrum.
>> Two big-time blocks on the edge of the penalty area.
Kendall Pietzsch, lovely turn.
Defender was too tight.
That's what strikers like.
They like to know where their defender is.
She spun her.
Unfortunately, the strike went past the opposite upright of Sweetland.
But, you know, we talk about goal scorers.
I'll tell you what.
In the midfield, Alma Gonzalez-Hayes, be watching her, has just done a simple job.
As you can see, she's stepping in here.
Just that.
Just cleaning everything up as it comes in.
>> Anliker, down the field, trying to find Scheuchl, couldn't find her in stride.
And again, anywhere Valley goes, they're running into a defender.
>> Jordan Martens, staying touch tight.
Literally in the back pocket of Tahnee Scheuchl.
Kept her at bay the whole game.
>> Boy, little clock management being done here by Bettendorf.
Valley in space with Scheuchl.
>> Difficult one.
>> And again, contact with Sweetland who holds her grand, and Valley, slow to get up.
Let's take a look at this again.
>> So, you look at this ball played over the top.
You can see Kendall Pietzsch going in for the challenge.
Hard to say.
I think it was fair either way.
>> Rotich able to get up.
>> Chapman's not happy with that.
Having a word there with Laura Anderson.
>> Anliker with the header.
Last touch by Valley.
So, a goal kick here.
>> Oh, Valley need to really bless a little bit higher, shift across to win this.
Get the back line a bit higher.
Pascale needs to play a bit higher as well and connect with the back line.
Get more numbers around the ball, get the extra player forward.
There's three up there right now.
Got to win the first battle here.
They've got to keep the ball in the Bulldogs' half.
>> Valley, just trying to put pressure on, but Bettendorf having none of it.
And the Bulldogs will get the throw here.
I want to remind you, at the conclusion of the game today, we do have the all-tournament team, which will be announced for class 3A.
Then, the trophy presentation.
That will be coming up at the conclusion of this 3A title match, and this is going to be a corner kick here for Bettendorf.
Now, the mental mistakes.
>> The communication as well.
Amanda Pascale came out for it.
It's going to be no rush here for Peyton Markham, just killing the clock.
As you can see, out of the picture, four white jerseys close to the halfway line.
>> The shot just wide left as Bettendorf got destiny Borland an attempt there.
>> Yeah, you can see they're not committing players forward.
Also, I think that Bettendorf could play a little bit higher.
The back line is 12 yards inside their own half, and Pascale's goal kicks.
>> Well, today has certainly belonged to Carson Bohonek.
The junior with a hat trick scored all three goals today for Bettendorf.
>> Ava Hall, just not there in time.
Good defending.
Good defending on the other side of the ball.
>> Engels did so well, drew the foul here as you can see.
Tremendous job.
It's the little things like this that count for every second, and that clock winding down.
Too many white jerseys committed forward.
Four behind the ball.
They need to have a screen of two sixes possibly in there.
Just to stop the ball going into feet.
>> Snow will clear it.
>> Snow has had a busy day, but she's done her job.
It's all about the roles and responsibilities.
>> Bohonek, lurking.
Valley, able to avoid further danger.
This is going to stay with Bettendorf, and that bulldog crowd, starting to sense it.
>> And the student section that have made this journey all the way from Bettendorf as well, down to our right.
>> There they are.
Valley, trying to clear it.
>> Hopped on there by Litt.
Needs support.
Snow, under pressure.
Good press there from Valley Tigers, and Snow does awfully well just to keep the ball.
>> Two minutes to go.
Bettendorf trying to go for their second state title.
They first won it back when it all started, back in 1998.
Coach Sanyi was a part of that team as a player, in fact, was the all tournament team captain.
Coming back to her alma mater to be a coach after a stint in college at UW plaqueville, coaching the men's and women's programs there.
And now, back to Bettendorf.
In just a couple of years, she has a title won for the Bettendorf Bulldogs if they can finish this out in the last 1:20.
Valley, trying to make it interesting, but Snow says, no.
>> Snow there at the right time.
>> And Sweetland.
>> The delivery wasn't right from Pietzsch.
Litt was just waiting there in the penalty area.
And you could tell it's fatigue as well.
The hard work done.
That was a chance to get back in the game.
>> Bohonek.
Still trying to make some plays down the stretch here.
30 seconds to go.
And those cheers just get louder, more confident, as they should be, down the stretch here.
And how about this 3A tournament?
A seven seed is going to win it.
Bettendorf winning their 12th straight to end the season.
They bring home your class 3A state championship.
>> So, Bettendorf beats Pleasant Valley, avenges a loss from earlier this season with a 7-1 decision to open up the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, they best Ankeny.
And here in the championship, Carson Bohonek, a hat trick as the Bulldogs beat the Valley Tigers 3-1.
>> Wow.
Absolutely genius.
Hat trick.
I've never seen her play.
That was absolutely tremendous.
Not about scoring the goals, but just about everything she does.
She loses possession, winning it, down in the last ten seconds, as you said.
Bohonek, up, fighting to win that ball.
The better team did win on the day, I believe.
Seventh seed.
Going to be different next year, depending on -- and I think you've got the stats there with the seniors that are departing.
Credit to Chapman and his Valley Tigers.
You know, starting the season with all the seniors he lost.
>> Yeah.
>> Look at it now.
>> And missing a couple of all staters who got injured too as well.
>> Yeah.
Yeah.
But you know, he knows how to get through the state quarter finals, semifinals.
He makes it work.
He gets the matchups right.
It was really difficult.
But not just dealing with Bohonek, it's the rest of the girls as well.
Emma Anderson, Markham, all the players.
You're looking around, the girls at the back.
Ava Williams, Martens.
Smith.
Snow with number 76.
I think there's a story behind that.
>> And for Valley, a valiant effort just to be in this position, but just coming up short in the state championship.
Well, it is time now for the introductions of the all tournament team, and we'll turn it over to the public address announcer, Rex Baker.

And how about that five goals here at the state tournament?
Two in the opening round, and then the hat trick here in the championship.
Lived up to the billing and then exceeded expectations, I think.
>> Yeah, you know, you look for game-changers.
She's an impact.
Not saying she's the whole team, but I tell you what, the standard and the expectation rises to the level all around.
You can see it throughout the whole team.
We're going to see Bettendorf back here again, I expect, next year.
>> So, there's your all tournament team selection.
And again, the all tournament team captain, Carson Bohonek.
Well, it's time now for the trophy presentation.

Bettendorf, your class 3A state champion.
And they're going to go find that student section to celebrate.
The party is on for the Bettendorf Bulldogs.
What a championship as Bettendorf wins it 3-1 over Valley here in the title match.
Well, we have two championships complete.
Nevada, a winner in 1a, Bettendorf here in 3A, as they best Valley 3-1.
Bohonek with the hat trick.
