Hello, everybody.
I'm Doug Brown and welcome to our final week of the college wrestling season.
And what a meet we'll have the number one, the number two tonight.
And remember that we have the high school wrestling for you next week on Saturday Night Live from Veterans Auditorium in Des Moines.
But here we are in Carver, Hawkeye, Tim Johnson.
And as excited as anybody else to see this meet, because we know the kinds of crazy things that have happened over the years, but we also know that these two teams have their best men ready.
Each team has its top ten men going tonight.
Well, that's just the way you want it in the meet like this tonight, Iowa State is a really good team.
Any other year, they'd be the national favorites.
This year they're ranked number two and they've been proven their worth all year.
They have an opportunity tonight to make a big move as a team and even as importantly, individually crucial matchups to decide.
Seedings in the NCAA is one of the biggest matches.
Tonight is right smack in the middle at 150 with Torrie Jackson and Terry Steiner.
A rematch of the all star meet where you see Tory Jackson score a last second takedown there to win 10 to 8.
His third in a row this year against Steiner and he was still number one in the nation.
But a couple of weeks later in the national Duals, you'll see a big win by Terry Steiner.
He turned the tables 16 to 8, even the career record up at four and four tonight.
Doug, it's a rubber match between these two.
Tonight, the winner will be a higher seed in the NCAA, and there's a lot of big matches still there.
Matches for seeds up and down the lineup.
Iowa State probably has its best power in the upper weights, but Iowa says we may have the best team ever in the history of wrestling and the biggest match of all, maybe not 150, it might be 118 where we have a replay from the National All star Meet Again, where Chad's capital, if you remember, had a last second takedown in regulation time.
He had the single leg, went in and got the double and scored on Eric Aiken sending it into overtime where Zap ATL then won by two points.
They have met four times this year, these two, and they have been nothing but close a draw the last time out on the national duals.
So that's a barnburner right from the start of 118.
They're going to be tough up and down the lineup where each team has its best.
It's number one and number two, Iowa and Iowa State.
Next on Iowa Public Television, record.
Terry Steiner We're back at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, with about 15,000 other people for the big showdown between the number two ranked Iowa State cyclones and the number one ranked Iowa Hawkeyes and Ohio.
Iowa now has the series lead by 34 to 14 with two draws.
They've won the last dozen in a row.
Now, those are the seniors on the Iowa team.
What a senior group, including the brands, the Brands, Twins and Ryan, they've had something like four national championships, along with 12 all-American honors during that time.
These are the lineups.
There are three wrestlers in the entire meet who are not rated at the moment.
And look at the number ones down on the Iowa side.
In the lower leagues, you see great match ups.
118.
What a barnburner that should be.
150 is going to be a real test again for both men.
167 Hamilton ranked first but against Ryan, who won the national championship last year, now seems to be back in form again.
Johnson and Charles Vick, another great one.
Well, I'll tell you what, they're just some veterans all the way up and down the lineup.
But Iowa is one of the finest teams ever to come on to that.
They are at home.
They are in front of a huge crowd.
And so however good they are, Iowa State is going to have to come out fast and stay in there because it is our 12 meters.
Jim Gibbons, who's finishing his coaching career tonight, his last appearance here at Carver Hawkeyes, his last appearance as a dual coach.
Ever got a good hand from the crowd here in Carver Hawkeye in third.
Well, there is Dan Gable.
What a success.
Well, you mentioned that could be the best team ever assembled in the history of the sport.
And there's just four things left.
There's this, mate, there's the Big Ten, there's the NCAA to contend with.
And there has to be a lot of luck to go with it, too.
But this group could possibly be just what you said.
Jim Gibbons, his replacement, has yet to be found.
Speculation.
Everybody has an idea of their own, maybe, but nobody, as far as I can tell, has is very sure about who the next coach is going to be a lot of prospects.
But here we go, add £118 and this has been some match every time out between this man.
Eric Aiken ranked third and Chad's capital, now ranked first, a sophomore against a junior.
They'll be back another year and they've tussled in close ones all season.
One win for Aiken, one draw, two wins for capital, including the last time out.
That's why he's now ranked higher.
Now push him.
Last time they met neither wrestler were able to score in the first period.
I think that it'll be different this time and I think the person that scores out first well it has a definite advantage in this series.
Doug Aiken tying up with that Russian tie up the two arms, two on one, try to get him off, controls Capitol that way, and then make his move off that like that right on the edge of the mat.
The referee, by the way, is Mike Pile of Grinnell.
If you're watching the national all star you saw, Pyle was one of the two officials there.
Mike Pile of Grinnell is the official tonight.
Different wrestlers like different styles.
And believe it or not, these two like the same style from the start.
They like to control each other's head.
But then there are some differences and we'll talk about them as they go on.
But both like to start out set up by controlling the head, snap down, push aside and create their offense.
Well, actually, you know, they're they're one and oh, that was taken in regulation time.
It's one win in a draw but Zap has beaten Aiken twice in overtime.
Well, but you're right.
Zap has yet to beat Aiken this year in a regulation match.
He has not beaten him in a regulation match.
And so we have to do something to win tonight.
He has to do something.
He has not done yet.
But you think those were tournament needs except for the all star which was allowed to go into overtime?
We're on Iowa public television.
We're just underway at Carver Hawkeye Arena before a capacity crowd like a little lots of people here to see.
Number one, I guess.
Number two, hit him with a shot.
Aiken in the row of Iowa State against the Capitals, Apple could not get that little shack working the way he'd like to.
So it's still back in the tie up position with a minute and 15 seconds to go.
First periods are 3 minutes long.
If you recall.
2 minutes, second period to mention the third.
I think you'll see right here, you saw that Apple tried to shuck the head and go by high.
But what's happened?
All I can do is mix it up.
You may, you know, stop the head down to a heel, pick lower his level into a single leg.
He has a variety of attack from that head that he starts out with to make a shot.
I what?
You get it under the arms.
That's Aiken underway.
But Zach Little came right over the top that time almost took away Aiken's balance completely but they come back up and they even possession no score.
Good job for we have 30 seconds to go The first period no score.
Iowa and Iowa State up 118 game at this level.
When your best couple of wrestlers in the country at a weight class, the margin is so small that sometimes you don't have a lot of scoring quickness.
It's not his head or his head.
You're lucky.
Aiken has 3 seconds here before he gets into the positions where he feels that he's been successful against capital in several of his matches.
Well, you're right.
This is not how either one of them wanted to start this match right here, though.
I think both coaches want their wrestlers to open up more than they have.
Aiken has his choice after his capital deferred.
And so Aiken takes bottom position as capital will have his choice in the third period, Aiken tried to stand out.
He doesn't have hand control, although he's honest.
You know, we have he got in trouble.
As it came up.
He lowered his hips and was able to get out one nothing like it.
Aiken does a really nice job of getting out from underneath, out of bounds.
We have Aiken against Zac.
Little Zach Little is a junior and Aiken is a sophomore.
So you will see these two match him up again.
Job in future years if they don't move up in the higher weight away from each other.
Both wrestlers really trying to control that inside in the head you match They're just you know, they're really going after it, slapping and digging just so they can get control because that's how they like to wrestle.
It just happens that both of them like the same setups for nobody has been warned all the numbers for no scoring.
Mike Pyle says they're they're working at it.
I was going to say there has been no stalling so far right here, both of them working for the inside position.
Just strength against strength.
They stayed out in the center, too, Pretty much.
We have 50 seconds to go in the second period.
Iowa against Iowa State.
Yeah, that's it.
Aiken leads one nothing.
Having escaped at the beginning of this current one we now know right on the edge.
And I think Mike Pyle is telling him to move away.
If he can just back out to the center, get himself a little single, go.
There's the lower shot by that little right there.
And he likes to go low if he has the opening right there.
Aiken is yet really to shoot low and now they're looking away.
And right here on this, he is really good at executing.
But also Aiken is good at the hip.
And you saw things again, strength again now.
So Aiken helped out.
We have 10 seconds to go here at the end.
That is very strong and it gets it on a single leg.
But that's how good a job.
Aiken did when he was able to hip out of that control position, the capital here.
And Aiken got into the front headlock on defense, but he was on the end of the arc, on the edge of the mat, couldn't take advantage of it.
We have only a couple of seconds here before we go to the third period.
No takedowns yet.
Aiken leads one.
Nothing is capital.
That's his choice.
He's going to go under.
Well, here's the escape right here.
The one point that's been scored in this match and what?
Let your guard down.
Now he controls that are both hands on hand.
We get that one point.
Aiken.
Interesting to see here.
Capitals against Aiken, who is a strong rider.
He has a hands, he's out.
That was a very important part of to.
Oh, that was really important because you could tell that the Iowa coaches were very concerned about Zac Little getting out quickly.
He not only got out, but he turned around and took Aiken down and now leads 3 to 1.
Well, that should be in every instructional highlight Urban wrestling, high school, young wrestlers right there.
Watch this escape.
Now, look, he's right back in.
Drops down the knee, right into the double leg.
Keep driving, takes the angle, just his hips.
You see that nice little set?
But he never let up once he got an escape.
So many wrestlers think it's an escape.
Then takedown.
No, it's all one serious capital.
This showed you how to do it again.
It's not out yet.
He's taking it out for the draw.
And zap, it'll still has control.
What a big match.
Nice escape.
Now, if it comes out, all comes down to a takedown.
Now, Doug Heck yeah.
Right up to such a big, such a big escape.
Right at the beginning of the period.
Zaffino is going to put it on took away one of the Aiken strengths which is the riding position and he turned it immediately into a takedown.
Well, it's like a three point shot in basketball.
You know, there's a big difference.
He hits a three point move in in wrestling.
Look at this escape by Aiken.
Nice little fit out above the head gets out.
Now he's put himself in the position to win himself.
So it's 3 to 2 in favor of capital riding.
Time will not come into play here.
We have a minute to go in the match.
Aiken is tied up with a two on one, and that wasn't tough on the head.
It's a good name.
It's the opening match in Iowa against Iowa State.
Now you have smart wrestling coming into play here.
It's capital does not have a stalling warning until he gets one.
He can play it safe by his strategy.
He has to be keep the inside position and don't let it kid him.
But he does not have to to show that little spot for the parents there from Mystic, Iowa Senator, the Southern tier of College, Diane and Jones definitely think it's 3 to 2 in favor of the man in black capital.
With 20 seconds to go.
We do.
Aiken is going to have to make a move here very quickly.
He's not going to have to be pretty good crossing the bottom.
He's going to have to go.
And we're in the last 10 seconds and it looks like sap at all.
It is around this final, getting the lead.
And Campbell, in three, three, two, another one point back between these two rivals.
And, you know, they're going to see each other again in Oklahoma City, in the NCAA.
So Iowa gets the lead.
I think the Cyclones feel that they have a chance to win the meet.
They have to win those some of those matches.
There's his parents reaction right there.
Now we're going into £126 and a rematch here between the turnaround undefeated.
This final will meet at home here.
And Rick Williams, a freshman from Locust, Missouri, for Iowa State.
The last time they met in the national dual tournament brand pinned Williams and is expected to beat him.
And you can bet that in a meet like this is want to go after it big stuff here's a lock up chest to chest and Williams demands on his back.
He's tough.
He's dangerous out there.
Well, he's going to wish that he kept him in the middle of the mat right here.
Tremendous move.
Rick Williams, just you got to give him credit right there.
He really went in there.
Gutsy move, takes Terry Brands to his back.
But, you know, Rick Williams wishes he had that in the middle because that was tight.
It was a great move, Rick.
Well, he has a lot of time, but we heard earlier in the season that he could throw and he's going to go in there against you and he had it locked up.
Sometimes you get one try and now Brands is out trailing 2 to 1.
And here we go again in those brands on the leg.
That's where he likes to be the top doesn't happen to yet look at Ricky there it is.
A guy in a suit with you and Terry Brands going to work on top 50.
He hasn't lost this year.
Look, look at this move right here.
He's in on the over and under right here.
Nice action.
And he had him tight, but they went out of bounds.
Two and two.
No, just to now he didn't get back and gives him backwards 3 to 2.
He was out of bounds before he could hold him.
2 seconds.
3 to 2 in favor of brands.
Now, we're in the last we're in the second minute of the first period and brands top up goes off to the armbar look.
And he's got the chin.
That's the key.
Mike Kyle says it's dangerous.
Now, the reason they called that, of course, was he had the arm past the 90 degree angle and that's potentially dangerous.
And every rule in the sport of wrestling is based around the safety of the wrestler.
And once it got that where, like you said, Mike Kyle called it off even though he had a real tight chin and was really ready to crank him over.
Wrestler Derrick Rance runs down with a tight waist, crunched the arm on the near side, takes him flat out of this position.
Williams has no face on until he gets up on his knees again to make any moves.
Go get out.
And brands.
Well, he didn't just by one point confident he goes out on the Armbar like to go up in front of the head turn Rick Williams over from here and again it's past the 90 degrees but right there I don't know what the referee sees that's any different than the last time he's got down.
Jay Williams is flat while making a tough on the chin there.
Oh, well, now he's got it legal and he has a that Rick half Nelson but here comes Williams he got out of that back is a gutsy kid he's done a nice job of staying out of real danger right there and Alex three three there is there's my parents who said hello to body saying a lot of a lot of people are ready to there's a takedown for grabs.
Quick second takedown makes him up five three.
He's got Ricky looking for tilt He's looking for back points here Perry Brands is looking for back points.
Rick is looking for some kind of maybe Granby finisher or something that can turn this just turning the potential points for Terry into points for him.
He's a game wrestler.
Tonight, the Iowa State Cyclones 5 to 3 in favor of Terry Brandes over Rick Williams shares the end of the first period.
A good, interesting first period with some thrills in it I think for Iowa there just for a moment at the beginning when Williams puts Franz on his back and a personal choice goes to Williams and he'll start down.
He's a freshman first year.
He's made a lot of mistakes this year, but as you can see, he has some potential.
He has a few things he can do that are pretty scary for a rookie.
And he's out five four.
Makes it again a one point match your feet against undefeated Terry Brand Well, Rick Williams was a three time state champion in Kansas in the class for a good position now required under armor belt try by Williams he knows he has to try such things brands has the takedown however countering it goes up 7 to 4 that little Terry Brands has had such a such a career.
There's no doubt Terry's father, who is Tom Brand and I'll tell you, the career of these two has been amazing.
There's a lower leg takedown by Grant.
He's now up 9 to 5.
He's trying to put Williams on his back, put him on his back, and then maybe come up with the can.
But Williams has managed to avoid five more than he did entirely from a minute left.
Second period back.
That's the bar again, I think ranking away and stopping.
That's potentially dangerous.
Ten given to us.
He's saying it's illegal.
He finds it potentially dangerous.
He's illegal here.
He's going to call the official over to the bench.
He's asking for some support on this video.
Let's listen in.
We can know what he's doing.
I know what he's doing and I'm talking to him.
We're keeping it right here.
It's okay.
Okay.
I'll show you where he's taking you.
To a clinic here now.
So, yeah, we have time.
Well, I'm not going to do it clinically.
You're right.
Let me show this.
So I.
Come on right here.
He's taking the thing up here.
Like this is going like that.
All right, Here you are, putting him in the business first, Anderson.
He's very upset about where the arm was.
Well, you know, you're ready right here.
What he's saying is it's not just a straight bar now.
The pressure's going up 34, 730, and it's kind of vertically, not just horizontally, pulling the shoulder to shoulder socket right there, right off.
You know, you can do all you want if it's legal.
You can't do anything until they go to a gym.
GIBBONS Point is, and he's also concerned about the safety of his kid.
One drop is good Rams let's Williams go It's 9 to 6 then a good match.
So far Williams has been dangerous in there and operands again goes in on a low leg attack.
Well not been able to counter that and Grams gets one more takedown in the sixth he goes to work up High score now 30 seconds to go.
Second period you're out if you want this out, let's go.
Controlling his man really well.
Brandes He's now willing to go out.
All right.
Takedowns again.
He's up 11th 745 takedown so far for Terry Brandes.
If you're just joining us, Chad Zaffino and Derek Aiken, 3 to 2 on a takedown in the second period against Aiken.
So I believe freedom offered stay in the middle to the end of the period.
This time, France will get in charge.
Third period.
Tom Branson there with the Iowa wrestling sweatshirt on, looking at his precise final home dorm each.
Rick Williams of Iowa State starts on top as a caution against Williams.
Get him heavy on his head.
Presented by right to go heavy, heavy, heavy.
That's it.
No, no.
This is you know, you got to take strength away.
And one of the ways to do it is to be a little unorthodox.
Use your legs in a crab ride, whatever.
He's trying to get a tilt there and not been able to do it.
Here's Brad McKinnon, hard again, turning and scoring you to go 13 seven back a little.
And the brand started to get tougher as the match goes on.
That's the thing.
You've got to be ready to go all 7 minutes and you've got to go to the seven.
You're not going to live.
It's a matter of survival with the crowd out there, they've taken wrestling to a new level As far as intensity, there's no question about it.
And he's beginning to roll them up.
Now, can who?
17 to 10 after the escape.
And when things start to go, they really begin to go.
And Rick Williams has been taken down twice in short order here in the third period.
Come on there again, let's let's turn that into an art step.
And they had and in posting the head on the arm and just walking around there again to do the same thing, you get to the point where Rick Williams can't lift his arm because Tom has opposed it all he has to do is walk around there.
He goes every walk around inside.
30 seconds.
Ali has now he has with him in the bar again, I said, I'm here in a lead of 23 to 12 with a lot of time left here.
40 seconds to go, 2313.
There's 25 to 34.
Just get it way away from Rick Williams.
He has just been buried in the third period.
Brands has completely dominated him here after leading 5 to 3 at the beginning of the well, 5 to 4 only at the beginning of the second period.
Yeah, the 11 to 7 going into the third period and now it is 2530.
He's all right Let's talk about next Saturday all the way with break.
We're going to be live from Veterans Auditorium in Des Moines for the 21st year in a row as we carry the Iowa High School championships from vets at 6:30 p.m. for all the ceremonies.
That's our annual extravaganza.
Tim and I are looking forward to that.
630 Well, you can imagine 21 years.
That's I can't, but I know you can.
I can.
I can.
I can imagine.
Here we go again into the £126 match between I when I was in high school.
23 seconds to go, 25 point K and Grams is going against Williams of Iowa State double leg who ran 27 to 41 to let him go now he wants a major if he got a technical fall to get it run second but he's doing it one point at a time because of takedown escape takedown escape Look at it coming through 2950.
He just got it away right in time.
We'll have a technical call with Friday win win.
It's a technical call because that means 30 point difference between and that's five points style of total, that score, that's up eight to nothing.
Iowa over Iowa State Rick Williams gave it a try in the first or so and part of the second.
But then the brand drive and power and one handshake just began to tighten into the ground and it was finally a technical foul.
The Hawkeyes winning number one national College.
Here we go at 134, Tom Brady ranked number one against Mike Marino of Iowa State, ranked number seven.
They met also in the national team dual tournament when Iowa defeated Iowa State 31 to 11.
You're in you're in a circle.
Get started on the five.
The last time they met in the national duals and ran a lot losing to Brandes 21 to 5, a technical fall off it.
Yeah.
You know, it's just the reference for us.
We'll see where this goes.
Rutledge Reynolds across the back, trying to make something out of it.
The fans with Warren on his back from that position.
Oh, I was not able to counter fast enough.
There is the pick down and they had a little show of temper on the sidelines, told him, I think as a star I wouldn't go.
We don't want to have to be a state.
See Tom Brown's work two on one and then go for the lay up grins.
Obviously, it's not probably surprising that they wrestle a lot of like they have a hard technique.
Well, they do have a very good job of taking their opponents out of position and doing it in a hard way that makes their opponents wish they weren't out on the mat a lot.
Yeah.
Yes, that's a high offsides, but high outside leg, single leg pick up.
Marino had just enough of a whizzer on the edge of the mat, just enough of an overlook to stop it.
Scores two one.
There is that same move again.
Now, look at this right here Tom Branch is going to try to shift is adjust as hips right here to try to tuck under to make an angle and try to complete this.
But Marino did a nice job of then getting the front headlock, getting his hips back so that Brandes couldn't finish off his move a minute, 12 to go.
We're in the first period at 130 for Iowa against Iowa State, a low single by Brandes.
Now he's in pretty good position to score here although Marino is across the back scoop.
No score yet for the school.
Now see, here's a scoop right here.
He's looking to not only try to take him down, but maybe take him down towards the back to where he could get a penny and go.
Lot of time left here in the second secondary like a pin him from here.
He knows where he's at go.
He's got the risk tied right around it right there.
He's got the risk he'd like to turn in right here.
This is an interesting position.
Although Brandes does not have a takedown yet, he has.
He has Marino almost up on his neck.
But.
But he's happy in and half out.
He'll start on about those guys.
Interesting position.
Mike Pyle brings them back to the center.
This is Iowa and Iowa State, same night coverage here on Iowa public television from a packed carver, Hawkeye Arena.
A lot of people here.
Oh, this is a lot of intensity right here that you see with the brands.
And it's not going to be here next year.
Doug, they're one of the both of them are two of the seven seniors that are leaving this team.
Dan Gable has to fill some big shoes next year.
Seven seniors leaving for next year.
That's a lot of intensity and a lot of wins going into the first period.
3 to 1 Rams lead.
We'll look at there.
There's the graduating seniors for Iowa, seven very top notch.
And Iowa State Luiz Marino.
Ed Hamilton, of course, is going for an NCAA title this year in the favorite and Cutler Jamie Cutler at heavyweight and then Doug Stryker, the third one down right there on Iowa.
He's an all-American that couldn't make the lineup this year the last two years.
That's how tough the team is to minute, second period, ready to go.
And Marino starts on top brands, comes in the underneath position where he chose to go.
Work translates to one.
His brother, Terry France won a technical foul over Rick Williams at 126.
Chad's capital beat Eric Aiken by 1.3 to 2.
So Iowa has an eight to nothing lead here.
But both matches have been interesting.
The Williams Browns match had its moments, too, because Williams caught Brand's chest to chest right at the start and gave him a scary moment right on the edge of the mat before they went out of bounds.
Well, these two Marino and brands here, 134, they've met five times in their career and Tom Brandes has won all five of them get in here usually by big scores.
But Marino here has brands flattened out with that leg situation.
I'm sure that Mike pilots make sure that he does something with it up there on top that can just sit in there with it.
But Brandes has not been able to come to his feet.
Well, he has it when he comes to his feet.
Look out.
Marino really has done a nice job of flattening him out, but he's going to have to turn and he's going to have to put it down somewhere right here if okay, out.
Oh, no, that'll still hasn't.
There was no point because of the reaction time.
What I like what I've seen so far.
Rick Williams, Mike Marino, they've come to wrestle and they're wrestling against two of the finest wrestlers in NCAA history in the brands and their game for tonight.
And you have to be to even come close to the brand.
Yeah, because the brands eat people up in the third period and now brands is going for the takedown and has it has actually at one point was over but I have my reversal Let's listen if we can for brands let's hear the word Sadly I didn't see contact, but that one I know we go the two points reversal and now an excited Tom Brand gets in there drives down looks good so far we didn't get to it yet and it happened later in that no recovery time.
It was at the edge of the mat and he headbutted him to recovery time.
Recovery time.
Mike Marino from Glenwood.
Here we go.
Now we're going out of bounds.
Boom!
It wasn't the head, but it was the elbow in the back of the neck right there off the mat.
Referee Mike Pyle is giving Mike Marino a chance to clear his cobwebs away.
Here.
Now we have 34 seconds to go.
In the second period, a reminder that an intermission tonight, we're going to show you our traditional college wrestling memories piece, a somewhat unusual musical montage 32nd about this year's college wrestling series.
And we'll give you an address where you can write to us about comments and criticisms, maybe suggestions about what we could do.
And we'll look at statistics on tonight's duel.
That'll be after 150 on Iowa Public television's college wrestling coverage.
MARINO Yeah, I want to got the Rams are back at it 30 seconds to go red is on bother you got to think we let you listen to one or two so you want to run by now we go into the last half the Browns think of the last half of the match as their head.
Oh and they they do it last half of a match like very few do.
They put more points on the board in the third period than most teams put in a match up.
Marino is not up Well now he is.
They're having a little bad feeling here.
And I think Mike Pyle is going to have to keep his eye on it for three with Marino and Brandes one point apart.
Here's brands in six three where Marino elbowed They're on his way out Marino elbowed ran running out.
It wasn't very much appreciated for the home crowd, which was funny.
Right now here comes Marino up.
Oh, man.
Elbow in the face.
So I'd say they've had it they each had their their moments here take down right here again stop the head down to the to the lake for a single leg and cover in the hips.
Nice job by Tom Brady to get back to action here.
Marino started underneath rams on top.
Tom leads six three over Mike Marino from Glenwood to go to the rim.
Prowse ranks seven three here he's lost only four times brands.
One loss was in the middle of two.
Alan Freed and he's pinned 14 people this year.
Now you see this is the same situation that Terry Brands likes to get into the hammer lock looking for the can.
Now he comes back looking to try to double it up with chicken wings.
And this is what Jim Gibbons is talking about.
Again, whether it's legal or not, he's putting the pressure up towards the shoulder and not coming straight across the way through a minute and ten to go legal legal tough bar arm and he has Marino flat on it.
He'd like to reach across catch the channel and go over.
What Marino has to do is keep coming to his face like he is.
I goes, he's switching sides one way to the other.
And and he's trying to put a lot of pressure.
And Tom Brands can put a lot of pressure from Marino's do a nice job of never losing his base he keeps trying to face him and coming to his knees.
That's the way you stay off your back That's how it six for relatively close match.
I get the impression that Tom Brands would like to actually pen morale if he could because he's not doing the technical fall routine.
Well, one of the things that I've seen Marino, especially right here, is they know that they just Iowa State knows they need to stay in the match.
And to stay in the match, you have to be ready to go at all times against the brands.
And I see that if there's such a thing, they're going for the win.
But a moral victory for them would be staying in the match and getting the rest of their team fired up.
There's a shot by brands that converts to 2.8 to 4, and again, his rival, Joe Brands, has Marino in a firearm position on top where Tom would like to turn him over and finish the match.
We have 6 seconds to go.
It's not going to end in a fall, from the looks of it.
No, it's going to end in the closest match these two have had right there.
You know, unless something lightning happens here.
Marino wrestled a good match here and it's right.
No, there's no right and there.
Well, Marino did a nice job of surviving.
That's he did keeping the match closed and not letting them get away and helping his teammates out.
France with a workmanlike job of beating the game.
Mike Marino ranked seventh in the nation.
It's 11 and up now.
Iowa over Iowa State.
We are going into Steiner territory now for Iowa at 142.
It's going to be Troy Steiner undefeated top ranked against John Rust and then at 150 we're looking forward to that rematch between Jerry Steiner and Torrie Jackson.
That'll be a barnburner 150.
We've had some good matches tonight.
Something interesting has happened.
And every one, even though the one that was not close to the technical foul brands over Williams try Steiner elbow von Bismarck moves and takes that two on one himself now John Ross dad is a senior he's from Alaska.
His records only four and 11 this year.
Go, go.
And he wants to stay in the match against the top ranked man, Troy Steiner Well, that'll be tough because I think Troy Steiner is becoming one of the finer technicians in the sport today, in the NCAA and in college today.
He's really perfected a lot of the areas that wrestlers sometimes tend to forget about on top.
He was good when he came out of high school, but he's really almost it in half.
Done it post ahead and then come around and now he'll put the leg in more than likely because that's what he likes to do.
Flip it right in Doug just like you called it now look at that.
He's going to try to.
It's a high leg, Kurt, right there, and he's going to try to put some pain on Russ Dad while trying to turn him something about Troy Steiner.
He's always trying to turn his on top.
Look at the chicken wing.
He's trying to slide in there, but you get right.
It's not a passive ride the Troy Steiner puts on his opponent.
So look at this.
The tilt he's scoring right now.
He has the rust, adds back to the mat.
He's not going to pin him right there, you see.
But it doesn't matter for now because he's got three holes in for 5 seconds in that Nearfall position.
He gets a 300 well, free Steiner when he gets the legs in, he's like we said, it's not passive.
He'll go for a tilt, He'll go for a power half.
He'll go right here.
Now, here's chicken wing in pulling in the wolf right there for the tilt and loading him up.
Come up, go.
So now it's five nothing.
Troy Steiner with a minute and a half gone in the first period in that tough ride, he gets on almost everybody.
Well, it's like his legs are like, they're the takedowns.
Yeah.
Look at those takedowns.
Tells the story right now.
Troy Steiner As I was saying, his legs are like an extra set of arms.
He uses his legs like arms.
When he sets up to put his legs in, he'll use the other leg to scoop up the opponent's leg so he can slip his leg in.
It's like he really knows he can control his legs just like he does his arms.
And they're twice as strong.
Right leg.
Keep it right like that.
Russ Dad has been able to get nothing against Steiner so far.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Trying to.
Over the elevator?
Yes.
Right.
His left leg, trying to elevate up.
Come up now.
Here comes the power.
Half Russ Dad hanging on to the arm.
There, the leg there.
See, I even call him arms.
Dan Gable.
You see Royce Alger, former national champion, now an ace on the world scene over on his right.
And there's former national champion Tim Krieger for Iowa State assistant coach.
Now, come on, step back and look at that.
Scoops up with the left leg scooping in.
Now he's reaching back.
He's going to pull it up and put on the turkey.
I like Turk.
Keep that look at right there.
It isn't able to pull Russ that over yet.
That's not very far along, though.
There's the end of the first period where Russ Dad was right down five.
Nothing there.
Jim Gibbons You see, it looks dapper and dry.
Well, watch it.
Look at this.
What happened last time, Drake?
Hey, if for those of you that missed this, meet the Drake versus Iowa State, that was totally surprising.
And I don't think Johnny would appreciated the what happened on the on the floor but it was Jim Gibbons night wrestling tonight and he got the bath That was his last home duel meet.
And there he is.
I got a correction, got his shirt pressed and maybe I think it's a new tie.
He's ready to go.
He's trying to get his team back in this Iowa meet here, bottom lots of possibilities of new coaches.
If you look over on the Iowa State sideline, you see one or two or three maybe, huh?
Hey, they're definitely possibilities.
You talk about.
You look at what they've got there.
They've got youth, but they've got experience with the youth and they've and they bleed cyclones 55 because we just started the second period after Steiner started underneath through leading five.
Nothing happened, happened.
It's like, well, let's go.
Go.
One of the Iowa State coaches you didn't see on the bench start night's loss.
Anderson Yeah, he got left.
They're not there and he's not that's uncommon here is good reason because he's been on the sidelines for years and years for game six.
Nothing after the escape, Steiner got away and he's up by a half dozen now.
He has a single leg on Muskego when inbounds kicks the leg out.
And then again he uses his legs when he's on top and on his feet.
What's he go?
Eight?
Nothing.
Right now, Iowa leads 11 zero after three matches here in Iowa cities.
Carver Hawkeye Arena before.
Well, I guess they're not that much shy of 15,000.
If it is, we'll get a total later on.
And we're happy to bring you this sleep tonight here on Iowa Public Television.
Our final night of the college wrestling series.
Now there's the chicken egg loading up again.
When I say loading up, I mean that he's got the chicken wing in, but he's taking rust stats hips and putting him on top of his so rust that really has nowhere to go.
And you might not pick a man from there, but you can sure rack up the points because he was scoring by keeping him there for 5 seconds.
He scored three points.
11 Nothing now in favor of the man on top Steiner lecture about red.
It's totally controlled rust.
And here's a takedown.
He has a high leg single right there.
And then he just kind of knocks rust that down from that with the head trip him with the leg.
Two points.
Here's the chicken wing tilt right here.
And look at now, his shoulders are past 45 degrees.
The referee is counting two five.
Three points are awarded to Troy Steiner again, Steiner puts his leg in on the leg.
He wants an arm to work with.
He doesn't have much time in this period to do it, but he's going to go to the third period leading 11 to nothing with enough riding time to start like waiting for the slowest bus in the world.
He's got, let's see, 259, 2 minutes and 59 seconds.
Hey, that was blade here.
So rust and march.
We'll get some time.
Why want to go to the level of ten Steiner With three and 400 wrestling fans up watching tonight on satellite up in Bismarck, North Dakota.
So everybody over the Army's place gets our attention and we hope you're enjoying the meet along with the rest of our viewers around the country via satellite.
Read through college wrestling on Iowa Public Television and two of Bismarck, North Dakota's finest, the Steiner brothers, Troy Steiner here, and Terry Steiner.
Coming up next at 150 against an outstanding cyclone contender for the national championship, Torrie Jackson.
If you think Bismarck sounds like a long ways around, the guy on the bottom there from Iowa, states from Alaska.
So they come from everywhere to wrestle in the state of Iowa.
We talk about families, we talk about excitement.
You know, the Olympics don't have anything over this meet tonight.
Well, as a matter of fact, Steiner had his choice well as good.
And I believe he took up oh, there he is on a single leg.
And he was able to cut the corners so much that Russ bed had no line of defense whatsoever.
And all he was able all he had to do, Troy Steiner, was come up for the two point let go, because now he's trying to get that 15 point win with a minute and 10 seconds left.
It's 13 to 211 point lead actually at 12 point with riding side time.
Rust had reached the upper leg with that move.
But he didn't have his you didn't have him to drive it.
And so Steiner just took the hips away.
One more takedown, we'll do it on red and escape.
So 15 to 2, 15 to 3 after the escape, actually three.
And that's seven three.
Let's not take one more.
That's going to take one more because you can't tell them the writing time until the end.
Torrie Jackson, He'll be out.
It's going to be a great one.
Bismarck, get ready because you got one more exciting match that you're going to be excited about.
This one always is great.
And Air's Terry Steiner getting ready to the last time these two IMAP.
Terry Steiner was really ready and he took Torie Jackson 16 to 8.
That was in the National Duals.
Troy Jackson doesn't think that makes much sense in the relative ability.
So he's we expect a barnburner here tonight.
Well, I really think it does set the tone.
This next match at 150 will set the seeding between those two for the NCAA 17 three.
He wants to get the he wants to end it with a with a three NEAR-FALL and he just did from there this technical call for Troy Steiner.
He stays undefeated after 33 matches against John Rust at the senior denial after that 5.0.
That kind of style of Elite 16 that I think now into a little late this would be a terrific last year there's Torrie Jackson at 124 to this week and his opponent Harry Styles 37 they're two and three respectively.
They shake hands for referee Mike Pyle and here they go in on the flag.
Is Jackson quick?
Can he finish this single leg takedown?
Has the leg up.
He kick Gilman out and he got the tip.
JACKSON Well, that's all on Jackson right there.
He starts fifth year learning anybody that could starting from a stopping starting event.
That doesn't mean anything with Terry Steiner or anything with this man.
That's one of the magic here.
The first takedown right here, very explosive.
Corey Jackson uses his other leg.
The trip down with the high single right there gets the two points.
Terry Steiner is out now.
We're back at it again.
Jackson made another sweep at that outside quick, low single attempt.
Didn't get it.
And we're out of bounds now.
Something happened the Jackson injury timeout.
Well they just hit heads.
It was accidental injury time out for Jackson with 224 left to go in the first period of the Steiner Jackson duel There's Terry.
Yeah.
My point about the first down the field anything is just goes on history in their matches.
There hasn't been a match yet that they've wrestled it's been scored less than 15 points.
So what happened here if he can boom he came right back into the head, right on the job.
33 got knocked himself out with a Georgia route.
Steiner and Jackson in the center, the black of the Hawkeyes, the cardinal goal of the cyclones from Iowa State, the numbers one and two teams in the United States in wrestling right now, having had it in their one duel this year inside the stadium at the National Duel tournament.
But this is the one inside the state line.
Good high crotch by Jerry Steiner.
But see that ability that that's real athletic ability and that's what they did now I think the whole state is back as powerful and as quick as Corey Jackson is Terry Steiner is every bit as deliberate.
And that's the balancing factor right there.
He's got good technique and he's delivering, but the score is not 2 to 1 in favor of Jackson and Jerry Steiner doesn't lack for power himself.
He can lock you up and he can throw you.
Jackson made a duck a move right on the edge of the mat, but it was out of bounds.
There's Jim Gibbons.
No, no, no, no.
We're in the center again.
Two, one.
Jackson Steiner likes to top the head.
There you see, Jackson is operating elsewhere.
He took the high crotch away again, hips away from it, Underhook from Steiner.
You see on the right side, Jackson kind of stays loose in that situation out there.
He's not trying to control for hits in Jackson got a leg fire is able to break it up to get the action right there and they're there What I mean, Steiner does not back off from a body lock right there.
He was ready to go and we might see it yet tonight.
Doug, we've seen a couple of chest to chest moments here already.
That's always exciting for people.
40 seconds to go.
In the first period, Jackson has the only takedown, I believe 16 to nothing.
They've won the first four matches, but they have all been interesting watches that at least in my opinion, You got Jackson's having trouble with his head and he's done the leg again, but doesn't have enough base rhythm.
He doesn't.
Well, I agree with you, Doug.
I think it's been a really interesting match so far because I think it's setting the stage for what we know is a very powerful upper line up for Iowa State.
7 seconds to go in the first period here at 150 in Carver, Hawkeye.
No scoring here.
Well, a reminder that intermission tonight, we'll be showing you our traditional memories piece with a somewhat unusual musical montage.
It was written about 40 years ago and wrestling from today.
And we'll also give you the address for comments and some interesting statistics we think about the first half.
Steiner started on the bottom and he's out right now to try to match him on this single right there.
He's so quick.
He has the angle now.
He has to adjust himself.
And this is going to be interesting to see what happens with Jackson Steiner.
Nice job.
But what Steiner and he's doing is that he's got the double leg to kick this like a catch, to give it a terrific takedown by Steiner Jackson did what he thought he had to do.
He had to make up to try to force him up.
But Steiner was too stable.
It's now 44 in favor of the Hawkeyes right here.
He's got the double lock.
Now, you stay in tight to the hip.
Don't ever get loose.
They tight to the hip to come around.
Now, Jackson just had to fight to get off his back or two.
Each man has a takedown, but Steiner has two escapes to go with it.
I love the way Terry Steiner, Troy himself, they get big takedowns, they have big matches.
They just walk back to the center.
They don't show all the three.
Here come Jackson.
He has a high double, but I don't think he has enough in it yet because he wasn't able to keep the space under their Steiner control his own hips extremely well.
It came out so it's four three.
But not only Hansen, but offensive body just yes, it's a very.
Jackson And he would have been on his back.
A big move by Steiner on that chest to chest.
He got it.
He's got it rolling.
He's riding a wave right now.
And the crowd at Barber hockey is in the NBA from now.
The excitement of seeing their their man and what is considered an even match to take a63 lead over one of the Iowa State stars, Corey Jackson.
Terry, 5 seconds left here, Doug, And he's got to move back and score.
He's getting a nearfall at that point needs to go, oh, boy, He's got a very, very period for Terry Steiner.
Look at this up.
Jackson knows he has to bail out to focus on now.
He doesn't fight it anymore if it state if he kept his arm in, he was down to his back.
He was on his back badly.
And that was on an 8 to 1 period for Terry Steiner over Jackson and now Jackson.
Now, Steiner goes in with a with a leg.
He had some real success against Jackson in their last four, but he actually turned him, as I understand it, a couple of times.
And although we didn't see them, even though Steiner is dominant in Jackson tonight, as he did in the last warm affair between the two, it's strange how things turn some time and they never look back.
Terry Steiner Right.
Number three right now, you might ask who's number one?
It's Ramsey of Ohio State.
There's a warning against Jackson.
That's the first warning we've seen in the league that says something, too, about the way things have gone put in that chicken wing again, Doug.
And he could turn with that.
He can get it going.
He's got it a minute to go in the match lingo.
He isn't able to keep it above the elbow right there.
It's got to start over now.
He's got it in tight again.
And we're talking about the famous throw, his brother.
We're talking about someone who when he gets on top of his heart and you can see right there that Troy, Jack Jackson is no weak puppy.
Oh, he's crying for airball.
He didn't get it right.
No, but he still has the bar early in that time when Perry comes in.
The AP story for you, what's going to happen in here is he's going to score again.
He will.
And it's 12 to 3.
A dominating performance by Terry Steiner against one of Iowa State stars, Corey Jackson and the crowd of nearly 15,000 before almost all Iowa Hawkeyes fans gets to its feet.
Let's go now.
8 seconds to go.
And it's a major decision right now.
He's going and Iowa State hasn't won a match, escaped.
And that's all well and good for Chris age of 13 to 4 because it is right in time.
Why can't they just say David Harris for Terry Steiner over Corey Jackson?
Oh, that was a big one.
Yeah.
Yeah.
All Hawkeyes now go in the intermission here after £150 leading by 2020 to nothing at the end of the £150 match.
Well my friend will have more.
The Hawkeye State has arguably, you know, been the number one wrestling state for many years.
And this year we had we've had three teams ranked in the top five.
So for our traditional musical salute to our wrestlers, coaches and fans, we've called on a couple of number one entertainers from 40 years ago to provide us with this season's college wrestling memories.
Now, I wanted to do the number one Battle of the Nation, the number one band in my heart.
Mr. Brown and his orchestra right here, and he scored with 5 seconds to go.
So he did Jackson with a single 10 seconds to go.
He got good.
That's great.
You're this is could be real dangerous because what he has really got to right now there are four areas putting pressure on him that is think I was walking along the mat and my business went out of an order.
It's got a sky that had a good sound.
Wonderful.
5 minutes to go.
Very good in front.
I went out of no had a good sound.
I got a look at that sliding glass into the bottom fell out of when I, I didn't hit rock in a lot of my business came and hit me in my last and a lot of guys did what I was I hit the bare minimum amount of was now above it.
And then I did my business with my favorite man.
Yeah, I love that.
And one of the things I like it.
You get that rainbow when quite a good band.
Oh, we've had some great memories this season and we'll try to make some more tonight's second half of Iowa versus Iowa State.
We'll be back with more coverage on your statewide home for sports.
Iowa Public Television, a resource for Iowa's future.
Welcome back to Carver Hawkeye Arena in the Iowa Iowa State dual meet, which has a 20 nothing score.
Iowa has won all the matches, some of them the expected maybe the closer in they won by something big and a couple of they expected to win big.
They won by a closer score.
But it all came out.
Even the Hawkeyes are still up 20 to nothing.
We hope you've enjoyed our public television coverage of college wrestling.
And now we have high school wrestling.
Saturday Live for the 21st consecutive year on Iowa public television beginning at 630.
Wrestling starts around 7:00 at the Iowa School Wrestling tournament next Saturday night, A week from tonight, Tim Jobs and I'll be there.
A lot of the, uh, our friends who work with colleagues, we work with over the years, and here's an address for you and we'd like to write comments about our college wrestling coverage this year.
And it can be also about our new Sunday time.
We have Sunday afternoon time for the first time.
Maybe it was something better for you.
Maybe it didn't work out so well.
But any other comments, criticism, suggestions you have?
Here's the address.
College wrestling, post office, box 6450.
And that zip code in Johnston is 50131 6450 for the post office.
Number 5031 on the zip.
And so that's next Saturday, T.J. We're looking forward to that.
The big three ring circus.
Oh, with the parade and all the great wrestling, it's always a good time.
We have a huge crowd here tonight.
We'll have the numbers for you.
But it's around 15,000 and they have seen some awfully good matches.
As I say, You know, there were a couple of we expected to be closer that were that last one, for instance.
Well, but 18 certainly didn't disappoint us because that was a very close match and it set the pace for Iowa to get a hot start.
In fact, it was a one point match again between Capital and Aiken.
And once more, Zapiro wanted and then Terri Brandt.
You know, I don't think the statistics are going to show us shortly that Iowa State had one takedown in the first half.
And it was almost it was a thriller because Rick Williams had a takedown at the beginning of his match with undefeated Terry Brands.
And that one takedown.
Well, it says to there.
So I guess that's because Torrie Jackson.
Right.
Torrie Jackson had one early too, but he had Terry Bradshaw on his back just for a second with, a bear hug.
And then it turned into a big technical fall for Terry Bradshaw.
Tom Brandes beat Mike Marino in a close match.
Pretty good match 824.
Here is Jim Gibbons being called out to the center of the mat by his fellow coach on the other side, Dan Gable.
That's a very fine gesture.
Jim Gibbons called to center mat, got a standing ovation from the Iowa crowd, a new NCAA record.
He hit 281 15,291 R here.
That's the new all time NCAA record for a dual meet.
How about that?
What a shot in the arm for the sport of wrestling.
We just when we needed it.
We've talked earlier about three new division one schools start wrestling next year to have a meet like this.
It's just the right timing for the sport.
Now you're looking at a sophomore and a newcomer in his first semester wrestling for Iowa State, Kirk Wollman against second rated Tom Ryan and what Jim Gibbons is saying, great to have a new crowd record and great to be involved and, got that kind of attention.
But I want a win here somewhere along the line because I was won five straight matches.
Well, this is just where Tom Ryan likes to be that front headlock and then he likes to post the arm and walk around like we saw earlier.
Done.
Look at his spin in the water.
STOUT And he's strong.
And it'll take a big effort to get that move by Ryan he faced off against came back out Ryan of Iowa has lost only three times this year.
His big rival at this weight has been Pat Smith, Oklahoma State.
He's back in there again.
Oklahoma State is undefeated, too, and they have some holes in that lineup.
But they're they're a tough quantity, too.
They have some standout people.
And, of course, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, two of the top contenders to push Iowa at the NCAA warming fought off a Ryan high cross quickly.
Harmon between the legs there to come through when he's about a minute just a little over a minute here at 158 first period, that's where Ryan likes to be gone.
Boy, bring his man down with that other leg up.
One headlock type of position.
Wileman is able to run out.
That time he was able to get his position so that he could run out of that because Ryan had turned the corner.
But he was just a little too far away from the hips here.
John Kirk Roman, he's eight and five this year.
He's unranked, but he's the Cyclones feel that he has potential to be a star, a real star of the future.
Of course, nationally he is ranked in the top 20.
That's right.
He's he's ranked 19th, but Ryan is up in the top two.
We're working all the way back now.
Ryan went on the underhook and then went down for it for a heel pick.
But on the edge of the mat, he's not able to score.
He's keeping the pressure on wall.
And it's been Ryan's pressure all the way so far in the first 2 minutes.
Well, of course, you pointed out earlier the number of takedowns you do have to score to win and you have to score takedowns to win.
And I always say there's only scored two takedowns.
In fact, out of the 29 points they've scored in this whole meet, 24 of them have been escapes.
That hurt us.
As we told you earlier, that once that was Williams had the one takedown against France and Jackson had the other one.
He got that.
And although they had the first takedown, they each lost.
There's the ankle pick there, the Ryan staying in close was able to run out again and avoid dodged the bullet little bit the middle a lot of us almost all I had the sense they're looking at him at that time that he didn't realize what a good position he was in.
He was thinking defensively on the edge of the mat.
Remember we have why I think it should be a barnburner coming up next.
Mark Rylance, last year's national champion, renews his old rivalry against their second pick that Ryan was able to drop down, clear the hands, drop in for a double leg, and he did it tightly and he did it nicely for two points right at the end of the period.
So he doesn't to give up a take, a reversal on an escape battle.
Watchman's choice down the wall and right away, here's the take down right here, right behind the buns right there.
He was able to bring him in tight, keep the hips tight and get the two points.
The old bun grabber will do it every time, especially with the ADD that inside trip to it.
Yeah.
Boom.
Ryan riding tough on the side.
He's confident.
He goes right out with the bar arm.
Now he decides it's long walk on the feet.
Let's go to one.
Go.
Well, these are a couple of transfers here, of course.
Waltman transferred from Minnesota, formerly out of south Dakota High school system, went to Minnesota and decided to come down Iowa State and, of course, out of New York.
Ryan, who was at Syracuse, said, I've got to get to a program where I feel more comfortable that I can improve.
Going to Iowa, 20 points.
He's able to stuff the head and walk around there.
Yeah, but you've got second in the nation and all-American.
And I think things are working out for Tom Ryan.
The escape makes it far too warm and I was able to get away from a one move.
But when Ryan came back at him with that head stuff, well, Kirk Waldman, he's hoping that same kind of situation will work out for him at Iowa State and his his father, of course, an all-American in the mid to late sixties for the Cyclones at 118.
Yeah and Kirkwall Double-A talented young man he's up in the air he does doesn't need the upside here in 162 just lifted him up and carried him down six two in favor of Ryan and we're 20 seconds away from the end of the second period.
First period, second period.
Ryan's got the chicken wing in on one side.
He's trying to drive the half on the other end, different styles.
And we are seeing Troy and Terry staying.
Steiner here, he would have loaded them up and look for the tilt.
Ryan's more of a power man looking for the halves, working the wrist and looking to turn with the arm bars without the legs, period, and 6 to 2 takedowns in there for Ryan, a good period.
Now he's going to stay on here.
Right here.
Ryan has him in tight lifting.
Okay.
Now he's responsible to set his man down safely to the mat.
He does so and gets this two points.
Ryan decided rather than going to a match a mat situation either up or down, he's going to stay where he's been successful on the feet.
That's exactly right, Doug.
He knows about what he can do on the feet against Wollman right now.
He's proven it.
And so why go into the unknown, either up or down, right?
Score, credit score guy He's dropped down a double leg a couple of times.
He's posted the head for a takedown and come around behind.
Twice.
He's reached for the inside the high crotch and Walter has had success against that.
One reason for the Iowa success and any success at a good wrestling school we just heard is the crowd and there's the inside trip.
They understand wrestling so much, they just call that style death.
They said Paul was backing off.
And about 10 seconds later, Mike Pyle correctly calls this calling because he was going on the edge of the mat.
But that's real intimidating to opponents to have a crowd so intelligent and understanding the sport so well.
Six two in favor of Ryan, We're in the last minute of this match at £158.
Iowa leads hadn't won all five matches so far.
It's 20 to nothing.
Two on one tie up for Ryan Weiland really hasn't made any kind of offensive shot successfully here in this match.
He's been Ryan has just kept him on the defensive from from the get go full circle circle well outside moves theirs out.
He'll pick from the Underhook position.
Now he's trying to lip balm out.
He's going to try to cover the hips here and limp it and he's close.
Got a little bit to go in the second half right there.
He looked at what woman was able to pull his arm up, stopping.
He lifted again and got the takedown.
8 to 2 in favor of the Hawkeye Tom Ryan High crotch.
Again, he's not in there was to look at that 10 seconds time.
Oh, he's put that on him just on his back for a second.
Don't think the guy got he got two back.
Boy, 7 seconds left when the referee, Mike Pyle, called the two, but he got two more points and point difference, a major boost and right in time makes it 34 three.
You know, it depends where your head is.
It can be positive or negative.
And another big win for the Hawkeyes in what has been a good in many cases.
But the score is all Iowa 24 enough.
Here's the last takedown right here.
Right.
It's dropped it got good position and put him right onto his back, held it for 2 seconds and got the two points there.
This is one.
Oh, I'm just going to say it.
The Iowa fans smell a shutout.
And if they're going to get it like they have to win this bad after beating Hamilton, they have to be the number one ranked man.
But Maryland, of course, is the defending national champion.
He's been having a slow year.
But I think the sense is that Ryan may be back.
Well, he's a big match wrestler.
And so he won the NCAA last year, a Big ten over Kevin Randleman, the freshman sensation out of Ohio State last year.
And I've always been impressed with Steve Hamilton.
They've wrestled since they were in junior high.
Steve Hamilton out of Emmetsburg, Mark Riley.
Now to Eagle Grove, great rivalry and it's culminating right here.
Two seniors, two of the best in the nation.
They've been separated in weight over the last couple of couple of years.
But now here's a Hamilton back up at 167 and they're at it again.
Steve Hamilton from Emmetsburg, Mark Rylance from Union Eagle Grove.
And although his parents are now living in Iowa City and right here in town being paid for, Hamilton's lost once this year to a very good wrestler, as a matter of fact, from from Marquette and from here, guys in the middle.
And Mark Rylance, an 11 and five.
That's seems strange for him to be 11 and five after a national championship here.
But he's been putting it together lately.
He'll get back up to his eighth spot.
Both of these wrestlers are very hard to get by the first line of defense, the hands right then and then once you get past the hands, that's only the first door to go through because then you hit their hips.
C Hamilton is able to get it past the hands, but he ran right into the hips.
Two of Iowa high schools, best products of the last few years, Hamilton Island home.
We'll look at that stat 29 takedowns for Iowa, two for Iowa State.
No takedowns in this match so far with only about a minute left in the first period, Rylan and Hamilton still at it.
They met in the national duel, but there's a high crotch move by Hamilton.
Can he do it takedown takedown things like ball you know Steve Hamilton there are some wrestlers that a takedown means a lot.
Steve Hamilton is one of those wrestlers.
He gets a takedown.
It's really extra hard to beat him by the way.
He is violent, likes to scramble, likes these switch positions like that.
And here he called Hamilton rolls and all this is scramblers are tough situations and Hamilton won that How about it here comes out with 19 seconds to go.
All right there's Pedro needs to move up.
The referee should be asking him to move up.
Oh, oh, oh.
That's all of us in on the replay there that you're going to see that control may have changed.
Hands used to take down right here in on and take right up into good position.
Look at it.
Come back up.
Head to the outside right there.
Nice stuff.
Drives him to the hip.
Two point Was that a fun scramble or not?
It's a great scramble right now.
Like to be able to know where to go.
Here, here, here we go.
Now, watch this.
Who has control?
Who has control now?
I think it was questionable enough that the referee can't really question it was his judgment.
It was close, though.
I can see there was a mile.
We have 5 seconds to go.
Nope, that is the end of the first period.
That's a good takedown for Hamilton.
But I'm impressed with what Mark Rylance doing right now as far as activity.
Doug, He's staying active underneath and he starts underneath in the second period, trailing to nothing on top.
Hamilton had a takedown on a high crotch move in the first period, managed to survive a big scramble this time, right?
Pulls out for his first point.
It's two one back on the feet again.
And look at Hamilton now.
Up at 167 four.
Iowa State has picked up the number one ranking at his new weight this year here.
Wrestling against the defending national champion is all about the middle friend and colleague, Mike Rowe, two fellows who make the north central Iowa.
People think that their wrestling is the best in the world.
You know how they traditionally and long put out great wrestling in North Central Conference in the Lakes Conference, everybody up north central Iowa, we'll see what's happening in high schools this year as we go next Saturday night to the that's not the time for the national for the state high school.
Meet Jim Zaleski there on the right.
You might be wondering, you know, Mike Mark right in the lineup and those that those loyal fans have been watching to see Keith Trammell on the lineup earlier in the year for the Hawks.
And you might be wondering what happened.
Mark Riley didn't just slip back into the national championship.
He defeated travel pretty decisively in 13 to 1.
In fact, in a wrestle off for this position right here.
Not to say there won't be another wrestle off, but Mark Rylance is back and has earned the spot.
And that says a lot about the Iowa program.
When a national champion is this push has to win at this late 50 seconds to go, 45 seconds to go.
HAMILTON as you see, has been reaching under there a couple of times in this period for that high crotch move which he scored on late in the first period, Like I said, in the match like this.
And he scores a big score.
Not the same with the matches we've seen earlier, like with the Steiner Steiner Jackson match.
At one point, a big point and it's 2 to 119 seconds to go as referee.
Mike Pyle now brings the combatants back to the center again.
Mark, times a wasting here In the second period, two one half again, Hamilton will be down in the middle word in the third period.
All right.
And there it is.
Okay.
2 to 1, it's like a minute of riding time for Hamilton.
We want some control.
Hamilton decides he's going to stay up.
He wants to protect that one minute of riding time.
So that's an interesting decision here.
An interesting decision for Hamilton.
Well, I'm going to work hard because my Kyle is going to make him work.
Yeah.
And, you know, that's very strategic on Hamilton's part because now he can give a solid morning and a stalling point up and win this match with no with no more offensive scores happening.
It wouldn't be very popular at Carver Hawkeyes.
Oh, but he's a very smart wrestler.
Absolutely right.
Working with Hamilton.
I don't think he really cares how popular he is.
Working hard on the Head Start to control Mark Rylance hit Mark hasn't made a successful shot at it.
Here's a warning to give Rylance reassurance.
He has an important gut a minute 20 to go two two on Hamilton over Rylance.
That might be the best thing.
Probably the best thing that could have happened for Mark Rylance there right now, getting warned for stalling, maybe getting a little fire here on the edge, about to come back to the center.
HAMILTON To violent.
What?
That's Dan Gable.
He'd like to have a shut out here is King Louis.
What he'd like to have is a shot by Mark Rylance.
He's not going to get a shut out without a shot.
24 to nothing.
And Hamilton has a one point lead and right on time by one.
Right on the money.
One minute, 3 seconds, four.
I'll see that.
Keeps the official offer up details on whether he can actually take the man down or not.
35 seconds.
Hamilton controls the head.
Well, now, hey, you know, he's not doing anything either.
He's just wrestling a very smart match because he hasn't been warned yet.
24 seconds to go.
But, you know, it's up to Rylan to score here to win in the first place.
Hamilton controls the head again.
We're 15 seconds down.
Obviously, Ireland down.
It's not much hope for the defending national champion who has not had a shot left.
Dan Gable is not pleased.
6 seconds.
And Hamilton wins 3 to 1.
But riding time, I would say you have a player, Hamilton wins 3 to 1, and that'll keep him in the number one position.
I'm pretty sure I'm on the rankings.
But here's what we have after that first second win, 24 to 3, Iowa over Iowa State, Harvard, Hawkeye Arena for the biggest crowd in the history of the sport, NCAA wrestling.
Anyway, 15,291.
Here's good one to number two, Matt Johnson of Iowa State against number six, two time all-American Barcelos Charles, a senior from Webster City for Iowa.
Matt Johnson from Colorado had a really fine year.
Well, he's having a really fan.
Fine here.
You're right.
And he just keeps impressing me more and more.
He's very, very talented and he keeps going.
He has a lot of good moves, strong Heather shows a lot of patience in his style.
Also tells big, of course, we've been watching him.
He's been an all-American for the last couple of years.
Very, very talented.
This is a good rivalry itself, the tie up and we'll have Travis visor against Dan Truth next at 190 and John Austin four against Jamie Cutler at heavyweight looking at Iowa State strong in the upper weights it could work Johnson only had junior Charles Vick finishing out his dual meet career before the home folks at Carver Hawkeye Charles Big owns a32 advantage when these two have wrestled so Vegas won three duel victories over Matt Johnson in the last couple of years.
Johnson's returned the favor a couple of times in there and the last duel meet at the National duals.
Johnson went up to 190 and was defeated by Sharrett Joel Sheridan of Iowa by one point.
At that rate, Johnson is back out here as Tom Charles from Webster City, Barcelos looks father.
These two have not wrestled since November of 1990, a year and a half ago, even though they were in the same weight last year, just the situation didn't put them together and they ended up second and third in the same weight class last year in the nation.
So Steve Johnson, in the cardinal goal of Iowa State, Charles Bacon, the black of Iowa, right on the edge.
And all these tussles out there are really meaningless because they can't score the outside.
Three We've used most of 2 minutes here in the first period.
Carver Hawkeye, 24 three.
It's Iowa Public Television's of Iowa and Iowa State, the big dual meet that ends the dual meet season for these teams with Tim Johnson.
I'm talking about here and as Jim Gibbons last 2 minutes, coach of Iowa State, that was a nice gesture by Dan Gable to have been called out to the center of the matter before the beginning of the second half.
Well, nobody wants a strong or a strong program at Iowa State any worse than Gable.
Strong wrestling programs are important, but especially for Iowa State and Iowa to continue to be strong in the state.
You bet.
That's like people have put together shopping malls.
If you're a big if you're a big department store, you want the biggest one, your rival right next to you, working the other side.
You know, you want them out there with you.
So if people come to you and the excitement is where you are, got 28 seconds to go.
In the first period and neither man has scored and neither man has been worn.
So in the opinion of referee Mike Pilot Grinnell, neither man has been lax.
Johnson has a leg, but it's right on the edge.
And yes, his calls are in.
Johnson scores.
He saw no heat about that from Dan Gable on the edge right here.
Here comes the Chelsea face on the edge.
But look at this.
Johnson pulls him in closer in.
Both legs are together, though.
Who was out?
That is interesting.
But I think Dan Gable didn't argue because the principle of the thing was he he didn't think that his man should get that position at the edge.
You know, you're talking about the Iowa state situation and wanting it to be strong.
And I think there's going to be a lot of great candidates there.
We're looking at the Ohio State, the youth, the brain trust, Joe Gibbons right there, Tim Krieger right there.
But, you know, there's a Sanders is in there.
But there are other names out there in the Iowa State family like, Carl Adams and Ben Pearson, a big name.
And don't think that they won't be in it.
When it comes down to it, it's know a lot of people outside the Iowa State family Johnson is now up three to nothing after his escape from Chelsea early in the second half.
Carl Adams, of course, out of Boston University, and Ben Peterson, the two time Olympian, missed a couple of big names that may come in to view as Iowa State looks for the right man at the right time.
What about on Coach Mark Rylan and Steve Hamilton just finished their one £67 match and Hamilton was the victor there and then had a first period takedown.
They a stand up 3 to 1 point hitting the front headlock.
Johnson, who likes that, put down some tough talking about getting choked out right there.
I'm hearing a great guy Charles Blake was asking for time Know they hit him.
Oh, they hit heads.
It wasn't it wasn't a matter of choke.
It was a matter of I got hit and I'm hurt by how far off the top of the head will take a couple of minutes, couple of seconds to recover.
But know Mark Charles, big sister, Madison, Wisconsin.
Just a minute and 11 seconds to go.
Gable top shot kind of situation over the next four days or 39 seconds, 31.
First the injury time and away we go.
Mike Pyle sets him up again.
Johnson in the red on the right there leaves three nothing.
Johnson's been a young man.
It's just been improving and improving over the last couple of years.
Tremendous sophomore year.
Last year, like I said, finished runner up in the nation.
And you see the difference, too.
He's he's aggressive.
He's keeping pressure on.
He's the one that's in the middle right here.
Shelton's on the edge.
And right now he sees the edge, like to drop down and finish this off that you can see it looking for ankle thing.
He just made a swing at it Charles Big was able to keep it away.
Still three or nothing Johnson 30 seconds to go second period and looks as if Johnson may have cut them out there on the lip something there.
That's what it is.
There's Charles Big now he can be coached during the other man's injury time.
Well, earlier when Charles Vic was injured here, gentlemen, Gable could not coach you.
Here they go.
With, what, 30 seconds to go here.
Iowa leads Iowa State 24 to 3 cyclones.
One the last one HAMILTON Over.
RYLANCE Oh, nice.
There.
There's Johnson again on it.
Johnson was able to dodge it by good hip action.
And coming out out of bounds with 16 seconds to go.
Hey, Mark Charles Big see what it looks like.
It's a good move.
It looks like Johnson knows what he wants, knows what he's doing.
It looks like Charles brings a bit frustrated out there and hasn't figured it out yet for him.
He was close with that last double leg shot under there, but Johnson's been able to cut the corners on.
You know, one of the things that there's Jim Givens.
One of the things I'm really impressed about as far as he's chosen to leave this year, look at what he's done in the last seven years.
Great dual meet record an NCAA title.
Look at the number of all Americans.
But he's also leading quite a team for next year's coach.
Got good people coming back for Iowa state and 19 for 1992 93 for me.
Wait for the whistle.
Okay, that quick two quick move.
According Mike Pyle, was made by the bottom man, Mark Charles.
Vic, Charles.
Vic trails by three here with 2 minutes to wrestle and Johnson takes away the first move.
I hanging on the ankle Nice little five Heisman trophy in the hips out one and it's three one right back in the match All right.
In time we're going to settle it on the feet back for Mark Charles League of Iowa.
Matt Johnson, second ranked Charles Vick ranked sixth.
Okay.
So it's going to be a third period.
Decisive situation on the field.
That's a big shot that Johnson Fisher Charles big wrestling from the outside generally yeah a minute 16 before 15,291 biggest NCAA crowd ever see Johnson likes to set up Charles big right here by by posting on ahead and shooting from a little bit of the outside right there now working and working sheltering trying to cut the angle there your sweeping low single.
There's Johnson in on a single leg.
They're trading shots right now.
Come on.
I wish we had gentlemen all points up here.
Now we're a minute away from the end.
Gable.
You see Randy Lewis in the back next to Gable.
Charles Big needs to take down.
Johnson needs to stay active to where he leads.
Three one here.
He had a takedown on a single leg at the end of the first period, and I thought, double strategy comes in here because right now there's no warning.
But he should be right there.
Johnson is one solid backing.
His good call definitely was just staying away.
Now he needs to drive right back in.
Johnson does to stay in this match without getting the point against him 3 to 1 in favor of the man in Red Johnson but he can actually get very little pick Oh three to tie the score with 25 seconds to go and going out of bounds gives Charles Big an opportunity to look to the bench.
Now the coaches are going to say, What do you do?
Well, he has 20 seconds.
He doesn't know what to do right now.
You know, this is a big decision.
Do I let him up and try to take him down or do I grab him down and write him out and say, hey, what a great comeback and what a great way to go into the NCAA.
I think he's going to try to write it down.
Okay.
Stick it to him if you can.
And Johnson's on the beat, rolls.
He's knocked out 13 and now it's only eight or got 11 seconds.
Well, if you're Johnson, you can't win.
You got to get in there.
You've got to get in there because you can get called.
And they're right there.
I would say that that's the winner.
Got a break now right in time.
But it's a 4 to 3 decision for Mat Johnson and a close one at end.
He couldn't have gone a couple of more seconds serve without me.
No, you got a couple more seconds there and that would have tied the match.
Charles Mark had his chance to keep the match tied by time out, Johnson was able to get the escape right here.
Chelsea gets the opportunity you needed to ride him out for a good tie.
But Johnson keeps coming up, he comes to his face so.
Well, got the free, free hands right there and came out Big offensive move by Johnson and to to earn the victory so it's two wins in a row here with Iowa State Iowa for the cyclones 24 to 6 Iowa knowledge we got a £190 second ranked Travis Pfizer against a talented 10th ranked sophomore from Iowa State Dan Troupe.
Interesting to see how these two men stack up.
Now, they did not meet in the national dual tournament.
Troup has done well against some good wrestlers.
He's been beaten by a couple that he didn't expect to lose to.
Pfizer has been one of the great stories of Iowa wrestling over the last couple of years.
Became an all-American last year, coming from almost nowhere mid-season and this season he was ranked first for a while.
All right.
You're all right there, Mike.
Okay, guys, go to work for 11, 2 minutes and 20 seconds to go in the first period that one night, it was way back.
Yes.
Pfizer, Travis, Pfizer from Marengo really done the job for Iowa here, coming from nowhere, walking on basically out of Kirkwood Junior College, just like we've talked about it before.
Must have a heart as big as that to put together because he's done a nice job.
But true, coming out of Montana, top high school product, he's really going to be a great producer for Iowa State.
This is the year they're looking for him to be an all-American.
VISER And all-American last year right now in the hunt for a national championship.
Actually, Nike is so wide open, Doug, that there's about eight people that could end up winning that national championship.
Upset.
RUPP Think of a lot of good people.
Well, Couture, for instance, from Oklahoma State Rex Hallman, who who transferred from Arizona State to Ohio State, Pfizer, and that they jump through pure lock arms on the air.
They go out, they come in 8 seconds to go.
In the first period, they go for a takedown.
Well, that's actually true of Iowa State there.
We had our we had our 177 pounder still out there.
But but he decided to wrestle just one match tonight instead of two critical national Radio.
Come on.
Lockhart very interested in position.
Now, one of the people that truly managed to beat me a waste of time that Pfizer did win was Mariano of Penn State.
Well, I think just like any about for the other matches have been wrestled tonight.
Doug, this is a match that isn't that could decide some seeding at the NCAA could go a long way with troop if he was able to go ahead and win the Big Eight, along with a victory over Pfizer, he'd have a good opportunity, especially if Pfizer stumbled a little bit to get a seed ahead of Pfizer.
But you look at 118, I think Apatow's placed himself as the higher seed, the naked.
You look at 150, Steiner sure made a statement about where he should be in comparison with Jackson.
You look at Hamilton, Maryland, Hamilton's going to be seeded him, and just the same with Johnson and Chelsea.
This is a big match.
8 seconds to go.
Yeah, Well, the question has been this year, how good is this Iowa team not knowing whether it's as good as the other teams in the country?
It's definitely good, but is it as good as any team that has had great?
Is it as good as any team that anybody has ever had?
You know, while there was one Oklahoma State teams and why a Giants All-Americans.
But look at all these national team titles ten national champions individuals, 29.
No teams ever had ten All-Americans.
Oklahoma State had nine, Iowa had nine, No teams ever had ten All-Americans.
And I know that this team in Iowa certainly has a shot at it, and that's one of their goals this year.
I'm sure Pfizer had its choice at the second period.
Start it down.
And Dan Troop from Montana left.
Can't keep Pfizer even on the map.
Can't control him in either one.
Nothing.
5.2 True.
Take it back to the center with a 39.
Let's see it right here, Pfizer.
Now it gets the momentum going.
It does a backward somersault, knees out.
So they lock up again here at heavyweight, by the way, John Austin, Da Pool Russell, Jamie Cutler.
Cutler is ranked fourth and also The Dark Knight but Austin Daub over the years I think has had pretty good success against Cutler.
We don't believe he's ever lost it Now you're right for his own three Jamie Cutler is against those Dorp they wrestled last year North won 3 to 1 and wrestled once every once in the last three years.
Each year, Pfizer and back goes from dark, not lost to an Iowa state heavyweight Ever gone.
Yeah, that's right.
True, isn't it?
It's there have been some situations young brothers tripping gave up a double them gave up the single and was right back in a situation where Pfizer has the underhook that he wants like that look at these 46 seconds to go in a one nothing lead for Pfizer.
Well, we were talking about Adam Mariano, a Penn State troop would not allow Mariano to get the Underhook position that he wanted it.
Mariano couldn't make a shot without it.
And just now, Pfizer in trouble did reach the underhook that he likes to work from 35, but it was on the edge of the map.
Here he comes.
Here he wasted ten guys, 25 seconds to go first in the second period.
He's really tough, but both being conservative here, there's no doubt about it.
Even though neither man has been warned.
You know what's amazing here is everybody is still in the stands.
They want to see the Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State all the way through.
This has been a very special team for the Iowa fans over the years.
And they're going to pay tribute and they're going to stay for that heavyweight match between Jay Cutler and John.
There's Jimmy Cutler right there.
Nice heavyweight ranked, very high rank, fourth, I think, in the nation right now out of Dowling the demoted Here's Jon Snow about a West liberty to, Iowa product.
Oh look somebody locked the door again.
Yeah.
Hey there.
Any time those doors will be broken down.
Big John played a little football this year for the Hawkeyes.
There's a role for troop, and he's out.
So now we're tied at one one and neither man has any more riding time to speak up here.
So they'll have to settle it right here.
You'll hear the big.
Here comes the escape right here.
Look at that Nice Granby roll out for the one point.
Come on, guys.
Quarter one, one word.
Now, if you were to say who's being in, who's on the offensive position, who's on the defensive right now, if you have to give the edge to Pfizer on offense at the moment, Well, he's able to push those down troops to the edge right there and be in a better strategic position as far as that's concerned.
His head, you know, you've got to say Pfizer's deep breath.
He uses a lot of the set up, but it is buried in the chest, just like Trump has his buried chest right now.
We're thinking we're gonna and get it to go a minute to go before a big crowd.
15,291, a record crowd for an NCAA tournament.
Pfizer is more for backing out right now.
This is where you want your wrestler to understand the situation and Trump has to know Pfizer's been warned and he should be pushing and doing everything he can to influence the referee right here.
Pfizer, on the other hand, can't be caught on the edge of the man hoping if you can make four or five shots right there, if you're true and put Pfizer in position where the referee can't do anything, the call you stalling, Pfizer needs to make shots himself.
Pfizer is keeping Trump from getting the Underhook position.
There's there another shot out, Pfizer marketing there.
Want to get to think He shot against Drew and he put it to the outside.
It's the urgent warning against the Iowa State.
Russell.
Come on, guys, For now, with 25 seconds to go, each man has been warned.
That's one one.
Pfizer cut off double overtime.
Who wants it?
Who can do it?
Who can make him push from the outside?
Look at that.
They're trying to push work at him, but they just can't even get it so that they can One can't get the other to the outside long enough to get the off 4 seconds to go.
And I suspect it's going to be a draw.
Pfizer made a shot, but he didn't reach that goal.
It is a one on one problem.
That's the case for the overtime.
A dual me.
Yes, it is.
You know, who cares about the draw right here that, you know, the fans would love to see him come back to the center and make it make it happen.
Well, it's a draw at £190.
Iowa State has won two in a row and then a draw.
So Dan Gable is looking at the scoreboard and he knows even though he's ahead 20, that he hasn't won a match for three matches before and he's bringing out his heavyweight title standard, it was never lost.
Cutler has Never lost Iowa State, even though Jamey Cutler is ranked higher right now in 1992, John Austin Nichols, Iowa.
Jamey Cutler from West Des Moines.
Well, they like Johnson and Chelsea big have not met since the Northern Open in November of 1990.
So it's been a long time and Jamie Cutler is a different wrestler than he was a year and a half ago.
So we'll see how it goes.
But I mean that in a positive, said Cutler has done the job.
He's won a spot on this cycling team by beating out Todd Kinney, who was the big Eight champ last year, who will be coming back for the Cyclones.
Feel real good about that.
They're not giving up a quality person at Heavyweight by having Kenny coming back for his senior year.
Austin Dauphin.
Cutler Austin Dauphin The black of Iowa.
Cutler and the cardinal of Iowa State.
There's a single like most of our in on it now he needs to cut around he does he covers a key point and it's also the normal take though that's how Obama needs to be if he's going to win this match, because he's up against a very agile heavyweight.
Now, look at this comes in for a double.
He shifts up to the single when he has two heads to the outside, does a nice dump, then he stays on top, covers the hip for two.
Nice action by.
Jon Ozark.
Oh, Austin Dart, right.
There you go.
It's out now.
Cutler's on his feet about 2 to 1.
Now 1000 Dorff is on the offense.
You can bet the firs going to be flying.
There's a lot of action that's going to be happening.
He's had some very exciting matches last year in the NCAA.
He's one of the most exciting matches in the whole meet was a 10 to 9 loss that he had that was just brought the crowd to its feet because of the action isn't necessarily a part of most heavyweight matches.
Oh here's Cutler in on the leg and look at what's happened grow muscle by Ostergaard Oh well that been cut of his hips in there and then managed to come spinning around on Cutler and get his second takedown.
But I think what we're seeing is potential come to life when him down one go and it's four two after the escape but Austin ARP has scored twice from the feet here in the first 2 minutes at heavyweight getting shot shot between periods.
We're going to give you an address to write in for comments again and suggestions whatever about our college wrestling coverage this year.
So grab a pencil.
No.
Austin, Dart and Cutler both trying to work the inside position.
Cutler trying to get inside working angles for like a high crotch single leg action OSU door.
People go either way.
Both of them have the opportunities and the ability to throw across the back.
This is Austin Dark.
He wants to come around.
He takes Cutler to the mat, but we could not put him on his back.
And so he lost the possession and there's no takedown at all.
In fact, he was lucky.
Well, he was.
You got to love the action.
Here's the address.
College wrestling, P.O.
Box 6450 Johnston, Iowa 50131 ZIP code to P.O.
Box 6450 and the zip code for Johnston, Iowa, 50131.
Finish your statement there.
You're exactly correct.
He was lucky at the end.
He threw that, but he didn't really have good control.
And Cutler came back into him and almost had the takedown.
Right.
So it's far to say, okay, here it is.
He throws it, Cutler comes around.
So have much of a move here.
And that was a little risky.
And Cutler was in but the Hornets sounded and so was no takedown but other than that it was takedown OSU door You know the coaches probably are saying yeah I love the action but make it sure they ready.
What's in the piece 40 seconds goes back to work for zero 40 when the official says 40 he's talking about the amount of time that Austin talked up for recovery.
He gets a minute and a half and 2 minutes to go in the second period to him in a third period.
Yet two goals and DA pleading for two starts on top Cutler underneath Cutler had nice hand control there for three is able to get out is a takedown away from taking the lead but it's something he hasn't been able to do yet that's right takedown Austin DA has the only two takedowns in this match one on his shot like that Oh not a one on the other Matt shot here's Cutler and again and again it's looks like Austin North almost scored.
I'll tell you there was a pretty slippery takedowns Giannis can do is take a nice action but he's not finishing to the point of taking control Jamie Cutler you got to give him credit because he continues to move and he's making it tough on Austin Dorff for three Austin Dark It's like they were had oil it just pretty slippery like, you know Knauff has put a lot of action together right here and Jamie Cutler has been wrestling, I think very well this year and has shown that he can go a whole 7 minutes.
I'm going to I'm going to say that Ozark's going to have to go to work.
They're going to have to prove it here tonight against Cutler.
And he's expended a lot of energy.
You know, again, comes under the arm.
Here it is.
CUTLER He has to work on his back.
Oh it's a near fall position, although he's not going to pin him from there.
So it's a 5.0.
You want to refer are you getting phone calls from from the sky or something?
T.J., you saw that one coming?
Well, I just you know, that was a lot of energy expended by Opendoor, but he didn't get a lot out of it.
Others did a nice job, been wrestling all year.
And I just I don't question Cutler's shape.
Oh, and here comes up.
Here comes Jordan.
He has Cutler on his back there, out of bounds.
Oh, no.
But it is two points there for the reversal for Austin Darby Here's Cutler boy and a nice throw right there And now he stays right on top the hips keeping it tight and getting the three points for back right there.
Here's the reversal Nice reversal by Jonathan door.
Keeping the fire burning for himself right there but he didn't get the back point because they went off the out of the match 3826.
This is a good one second second period ends as soon as the whistle blows.
So now Austin DA has his choice.
What does he want to do?
He takes down the big move by Cutler.
A five point row got him back in the match again.
He's now up 8 to 6 off Cutler with Iowa State on a little bit of a roll here lately Leach is behind Iowa 26 to 8 but every match has its own meet you know and he's Iowa Iowa State duals and Austin dark comes out 8 to 7 I would guess that there's going to be more scoring Oscar Brock locks up chest to chest now they come apart Matt Cutler goes on the edge of the mat I think Austin dark lost his concentration just for a second there but they're out of bounds for a minute 24 I think right I think goes north looks pretty good know about a couple of minutes ago I thought he was fading a little bit.
I think he looks good right now.
I think we're going to have a real excited and he just hasn't been able to control Cutler.
Guess what?
He's been into him real tight.
Underhook Nice to see a good heavyweight match.
8 to 7.
Cutler leads.
He has 13 under like there's the hips.
If he could control them and come up and control the hips, it's still up in the air I think get hit pretty hard.
Come up nothing out and so we start again.
We have 57 seconds to go.
A terrific heavyweight match between Cutler and Iowa Carter, Hawkeye area 31.
Now that we get to fire heavyweights out there, now opens up another single leg.
But Cutler manages to get out.
Now he goes on his move to go.
Can Cutler come out?
That's the question.
Oh, he's about to open.
York has got to win the position because Cutler will not be able to get away.
But the question now is what are those two guard pinning?
Oh, what's the referee's hand?
He'll tell you no, but those two Darwin and the winner, well, they traded five point moves and that man got the last one.
And so Iowa wins a heavyweight.
Well, he goes to guard over Jay Cutler, who I'll tell you what, two tired heavyweights, maybe physically.
But this man, this meet is magical.
And there's a lot of credit to both those heavyweights.
A great win broke the door, but they made it everything that this match could be.
So it's Iowa, 29, Iowa State eight.
There were a lot of interesting moments in this.
Meet.
There was a look at that.
You know, I love coaches.
I'm looking at the referees.
I just saw its capital and it could hit each other.
And he just said, I'm going to get you the stuff.
And they were like, look at this person right here, Utah, Come up, catch it.
It's all about possession catches Jamie Cutler out of position He was heads up enough to do it.
He had enough energy to do it and just settled in and settled in.
He knew he had the win.
He knew he was not going to get away, that Cutler was going to be there forever.
But almost a dark one of the he wanted to fall look.
And that's cable.
Yeah.
He's happy.
Don't tell him he won't want the job.
He can't deny it.
We've got it on camera.
Well, 29 to 8, that's the final score there.
A disappointed Jamie Cutler after a heck of a heavyweight match.
We hope you enjoy it and we hope you enjoy it.
