I have a unique perspective on it that comes from being a mixed race child raised in the only black family of an all-white town in northern Iowa.
And so even though Juneteenth was not something that my community celebrated, I know that it was in the hearts of my very own family members.

That is why I'm wearing roses in his honor tonight.

A good selection for Juneteenth because I think for us as black people especially with our relationship with Christianity and our relationship with the religion, that conversation will w God is a constant part of our struggle in regards to our relationship with America and the other song is "Fight on."
Which is really dear to me because I'm from St. Louis, and spend a lot of time with the protests during the Michael And I spent a decent amount of time here especially last summer in Des Moines when there was a bunch of protests happening over the George Floyd murder.
And I just wanted to take a song and really channel all of that energy and that anger, pain, and just overall emotion and give the people something to look back on and go, this is what I was feeling.
This is what was going through my mind as we were outside, as we were standing in front.
The police officers with their shields and their teargas.
This is what my feeling was, this song right here.
