Hello, Iowa.
Davies: Thanks so much for being here.
Can you tell me a little bit about the band and how you all got started?
Yeah, so The Foxies started in Phoenix, Arizona.
Um, I started it as, like, a solo project, but I always knew that I wanted it to be a band.
And then I found myself in Nashville, found these guys, and we started playing together since, like, 2016.
But back in 2020 was when we finally really got kind of like the chance to find our sound.
So it's been years, but good years.
How would you describe that sound to someone who maybe hasn't heard you before?
So many things.
Yeah.
I've been sort of coming to, um -- Like we are the intersection of dance music, rock music, punk music, and pop music.
Okay.
And I think, when we're really on our stuff and we hit that combo, it feels amazing.
And then there are some songs and records we've made where we kind of have to do one after the other to get that balance, but I think when we're really at our best, we're we're a pretty even split between those things started.
Started coining it as glitter punk or bubble grunge.
Right.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I like that.
I like that.
It's always tough, especially in the modern day when music, like, there's so many different genres that people are interested in and we are all from different backgrounds, so it kind of just always meshes into this thing that we are, you know, it's hard to put your finger on it.
Yeah, can you each talk about kind of your own musical background and the influences you feel like you bring to the -- to this band?
Um, well, I grew up on like, Stone Temple Pilots and Blondie and Billy Idol, The Smiths and The Cure.
So I love a lot of like, I love a lot of punk, grunge and new wave.
That was my big thing that dad kind of got me hooked on, for sure.
[ Laughs ] I pretty much grew up with a father that just flicked the radio and said, if you can't play this, then you're never going to be a good musician.
Um, but I grew up in the '90s.
I'm a -- I'm a millennial.
And that era of radio was just anything that was good.
You know, there was Metallica, Blink, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, all on the pop radio.
So you had that like crazy amounts of pop "music," and you were like, wow, this is awesome, but.
My first concert at 13, my mom took me to see Rush.
Oh, yeah!
I had no idea what was going on, but, uh, that kind of set the tone for me as a musician.
Just the bands I stuck to.
Yeah, I just had such a wide, like, all around exposure to so much music, and I played a lot of different genres and different instruments and different settings that I feel like in this band, a lot of times I feel like my job is to fill in whatever the blanks are.
Um, but I feel really lucky, like a lot of us here, like, I grew up in a family where so much music was played.
I mean, I grew up on the Beatles and I grew up on The Clash, and I grew up on Joni Mitchell.
It just spreads out so much.
And, um, yeah.
So I feel like when we get together, we sort of put on different hats from all these different influences that we've got.
And on any given day you roll it up and it's it's that combo we were talking about.

For me, it's -- it's the latter.

But for me, it's like as soon as we hit, it's -- it's you either get on the train or you're off.
Yeah, it's really interesting.
So like the earlier EPs that we had some of the physical like movement energy wasn't the same.
Um, like even when I first joined the band, there was just a lot of this dancey thing that kept me from doing more of the headbanging, rocking out, breaking my neck kind of stuff.
And then as the time went on where we just -- our influences kind of shifted in different ways and the sonic elements changed.
Um, and then also how we approach some of the pop songs anyway.
We do give them a little bit more oomph live, so you can still kind of get that thrash in there.
I want to commend you though, because like, yes, like, I think that like, just, I think it's years of practice, truly.

That is a really good question.
Um, I think we constantly try to ask ourselves that.
It could be something as simple as what happened that day.
It could be something as simple as what the collaborator said...
Yes.
...the day we got there.
and then it's like, "Oh my God, that's a song!"
I also find it's a lot harder to write, just personally when I'm not angry or sad about something.
Davis: Yeah.
You know, happy songs are the hardest songs to write and you could get some really good ones.
But usually if you're really in despair and your soul is crying, people are going to feel that, too.
And it's just going to write itself.
Yeah, and you know something that a lot of the artists on the show talk about, too, is like the relationship of a song once you play it in front of people.
Right?
Yeah.
Because then at that point it's the thing that you write and you create, but then it doesn't really belong to you.
And I'm sure you get feedback from the audience.
You see how the audience responds to it, Yeah.
And it changes your own relationship with the song as well.
It really does.
And you really don't have that song settle into your system until you play it live, you know, and until you see people react to it.
Mm-hmm.
Um, and that's usually a tall -- like a telling factor for us is when we see people react and we're like, "Do they like it?"
Yeah.
[ Laughing ] Yeah.
"Are they vibing with it?"
So that's a really good point.
