>> Tim: COLLEGE WRESTLING FROM DAMONE, IOWA, THE FIFTH AND FINAL MATCHUP, AS conference foes, William Penn take on Grand View.
I am Kim Johnson along with legendary coach, Tim Miller.
The recently announced wrestling journalist of the year, KYLE KLINGMAN .
>> Kyle: this will be a fun duel.
>> Tim: what a way to cross the television finish line, number two, number three going at it in the middle of February.
It does not get better than that.
Grand View leads the series 4-0 and won last year in Oskaloosa.
And the coach really hasn't going on, starting to build something special, and it has a lot to do with bringing in reinforcements like these Nigerian Olympians.
>> Jim: the only program , with Christianah Ogunsanya and Esther Kolawole, they were at the Paris games, this is special.
That very first one, Lily Zapata and Judy Sandoval, you always want to win the first match of the duel.
At 131, you have Devin Patton and Maya Davis, both two-time all Americans.
>> Kyle: and at 160, Caitlyn Davis, an NIH transfer, and she is coming in and she will make a difference.
>> Tim: now let's pause for our national anthem.
>> Announcer: Ladies and gentleman, direct your attention to the flag as we honor our nation with a performance of the national anthem.
Tonight, we are honored to have a very special guest performing for us.
â™á O SAY, CAN YOU SEE BY THE DAWN'S EARLY LIGHT WHAT SO PROUDLY WE HAILED AT THE TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING?
WHOSE BROAD STRIPES AND BRIGHT STARS THROUGH THE PERILOUS FIGHT O'ER THE RAMPARTS WE WATCHED WERE SO GALLANTLY STREAMING?
AND THE ROCKETS' RED GLARE the bombs bursting in air gave proof through the night that our flag was still there oh, say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave over the land of the free and the home of the brave ?
â™á >> Tim: beautifully sung.
His brother plays football for Grandview, undefeated, now let's take a look at the contrasting rules .
>> Jim: men wrestle folk style, women, the international style.
No riding time , these matches will not go into overtime either, two three-minute periods, ties are decided by criteria, let's break it down , technical superiority, 10 or more points, a decision is worth three.
If you score a point during the match, you will score for your team if you do not get tend .
That is crucial, if you win 10 to 1, that is crucial.
>> Tim: We are getting ready to start, at 103 pounds , different weight classes, William Penn, as Lily Zapata, and she is from flower mound high school, her sister wrestles at Texas Western, going up against Judy Sandoval, also a Texan.
A Texan state champ out of El Paso.
At Heston Hanks high school.
>> Kyle: some hand fighting going on, you will notice there is no rule on headgear .
They changed it , no three-point takedown, you can get a two-point takedown, we will be watching for that, in freestyle, there is a step out, if you are not grounded, you will give up the point.
>> Tim: William Penn, they really want to stay in contention in the first half they are very strong in the second half, and they need to hopefully take advantage at home with the crowd , they need to be leading at halftime if they are to win this meet.
So, Zapata, that is why you see one point, they went out of bounds.
1-0 Zapata with two minutes to go.
>> Kyle: it will be crucial, this is big-time right here, you said it in the keys to the meet, 100%.
>> Tim: For Grandview, her only loss .
And then, that took her to her back.
Big lift , Sandoval, with the reversal.
That was four points , and one point for the reversal, might now 5-1 in favor of Zapata.
A big start coming in favor of Zapata.
And he will notice how high she lifts on this takedown.
>> Tim: The number 15 -ranked wrestler, 5-1 early in the first period.
>> Jim: A lot of times, when you get in the hole like this, when you are the first matchup, that is a little hard to come back from, we will see if Sandoval can get back into this match.
>> Tim: Sandoval tried to step around .
And Zapata gets the takedown.
>> Jim: We saw the four-point takedown with Zapata.
They are really giving us the rules tutorial right now.
>> Tim: Trying to drive Sandoval over, nothing yet.
7-1.
>> Jim: We have Angelo Crinzi, the head coach , with the assistant , side by side.
Big point for Zapata.
Now, it looks like that is how it will end that first period, 7-1.
It ends , 103, Lily Zapata, out in front , 7-1.
Talk to us about the pack.
>> Kyle: we are going to get a replay here.
>> Jim: This was a big takedown .
Establishing her dominance in the first period.
We are getting started here with the second period.
To map a good look at the coaching staff , that is Jake Kadel and Cash Wilcke, Midlands champion for Iowa, Jake Kadel , the New London native.
He has had quite a high school career.
Never lower than third place, four years in a row.
>> Jim: Sandoval, nice takedown, 7-3.
So, when you are in a situation like this, you need to get back into it.
Did not there are .
>> Tim: If she could do it again, that is another two.
That goes out of bounds, and six points , on three exposures, different than folk style .
You do not have to hold on to the back, that is the two-point takedown, turns it, turns it .
>> Tim: Now 9-7 with Sandoval ahead.
After being behind .
Beautiful job.
And that is another four -point takedown, now it is 11 -9, Zapata.
>> Kyle: big-time, 132 to go, you give up six points, get the takedown here.
Did not across the line, on her back, that is a four-point takedown, 1:20 left.
>> Jim: Great effort , what a way to start.
>> Tim: Two-on-one , nothing yet , goes around, and man, this is scrappy .
And Sandoval, trying to get both arms locked up, takes a shot , trying to go around.
35 seconds.
And now, Sandoval gets the takedown , if it ended this way, it would be four-points , so right now, on criteria, Zapata leads 11-11, this is not going to overtime.
There is no replay.
Tying it up, essentially Lily Zapata has the criteria lead.
>> Tim: 25 seconds left.
Both stepping in front.
Nothing yet, short time , 15 seconds in the match.
It will not go to overtime.
The criteria right now, being held by Lily Zapata, because of the four-point move .
>> Jim: She did not want to be in space right now.
>> Tim: And Emma Villa --Lily Zapata will get the victory for William Penn , over number five, Zapata.
Huge.
That will be three points for William Penn, one for Grand View, they scored technical points in the match .
That is how you get that freestyle tutorial.
That is how freestyle scoring works and how it is different than folk style.
>> Kyle: we had the experts sitting with us, Jim.
>> Jim: What kind of action was that?
>> Tim: This is a forfeit.
William Penn forfeits.
Their wrestler is injured right now.
So Tristan Nitta gets the win right there.
Tristan Nitta, all the way from Hawaii, number 7, gaining five points for that forfeit.
6-3 after two matches in favor of Grand View.
Here we are with the Olympian at 117, ranked number one, Christianah Ogunsanya, 10-0, from Nigeria.
Rustled in Paris.
Going up against Mayangelie Colon .
Ranked number nine, Wilbur E, Florida, sophomore .
Jim, this is interesting because Ogunsanya was brought up in the freestyle system.
She was not looking for it as much, but they have been working on it this week, this is good, if William Penn is going to stay in, they need a big win and they can get one out of Ogunsanya.
>> Jim: Like, in Iowa, the girls Russell folk style.
In Nigeria, they wrestle freestyle.
She is not looking for the big turn.
>> Tim: Colon with the surprise takedown, and Christianah Ogunsanya comes back for the takedown, 2-2.
>> Jim: If Ogunsanya does not get the fall, she will earn two points in this.
>> Tim: Ogunsanya, across her back, and then Christianah Ogunsanya gets the reversal.
>> Jim: Colon from Moberly , Florida, on the Puerto Rican senior team .
Has not been in the sport very long.
Ogunsanya, wrestling and two college tournaments, this is close to a fall .
>> Tim: Wow, that is how fast it can happen.
Christianah Ogunsanya remains undefeated , big fall.
Five Points on the board for William Penn, they will go back out in front, 8-6.
Element that is big-time, that is what they needed, they needed big points out of their Olympian.
They got the maximum points.
Ogunsanya gets five key points for William Penn.
>> Tim: There is your winner.
Christianah Ogunsanya.
>> Kyle: right to her back, and petals in , gets the fall.
>> Tim: It looks like something happened to the knee.
It collapsed.
Now we are getting ready for 124 pounds, Joanna Vanderwood for William Penn going up against Catie Campbell for Grandview.
>> Jim: Vanderwood rated fourth , and Campbell, 14.
>> Tim: She was fourth, Vanderwood, All-American in '24, scholar athlete and award winner, out of Washington, a transfer from Iowa wrestling .
>> Jim: The fascinating part of the story, Iowa closed down their school , five of the girls transferred to William Penn, this is one of the transfers.
And that they are really building something special at William Penn, as Grandview has been near the top.
Another shot.
Vanderwood, nice block.
Comes back up.
Campbell is a two-time All-American, finished eighth at the championship, has an identical twin sister , not wrestling tonight, and that twin sister, Cailin Campbell, won the Grand View open, sitting out tonight, getting ready for the end of the year push.
And we have talked a lot about twins.
>> Tim: We really have, it has been the year of the twins.
Catie Campbell , freshman of the year, and a pre-veterinary student here at Grand View out of North Montgomery high school >> Jim: 1:20 left , there are only two periods in college women's wrestling.
We have not seen the activity clock, if the referee determines that one wrestler is not active, vacant put them on the clock.
The wrestler that is put on the clock does not score by the tundra time runs out, that will be critical down the home stretch.
It may be critical in a close match like this.
Anytime you have a match, a lot of times you see this, you are feeling each other out, the shot right now, by Vanderwood, we will see if she can off this.
>> Tim: Trying to push the hand off of her legs so that she can make an attempt to go around, nothing doing.
Both on their feet, 30 seconds left, first period and a lot of action but no scoring yet.
Found the corner , Joe Joe Vanderwood, binding the angle with no score yet.
Trying to stay up , she will get the takedown, and there is the two.
>> Jim: Right at the end of the first period.
Two points.
>> Jim: In favor of JoJo Vanderwood, they put the points of differently.
>> Jim: It takes a little getting used to.
You saw that and you did not know what was going on, that was the activity clock point, so, JoJo Vanderwood, she was not able to score in the 30 seconds.
>> Tim: It gave them the score .
>> Jim: Kind of like a star call.
>> Tim: Correct.
Puts you on the clock.
Then, if it comes, they will put you on a 30-second activity clock.
>> Jim: Two -on-one , with Vanderwood.
And we can see the officials, making the call .
>> Tim: Vita Garber.
They have called Vanderwood the most disciplined wrestler on the team.
That is important to what she means to the program.
Now, Campbell, by Campbell, great defense, Vanderwood squares up immediately , now in front and lock, two minutes to go, second period.
nice shot, off the whistle.
>> Jim: Vanderwood, another two-point takedown, upfront, 4-1 with 1:40 left in the match.
>> Tim: You can see this, the leg lift, trying to take it over , there she goes , that is two.
She can do it as many times as she wants, that is another two.
Holy cow, things can change quickly.
Again, that is just the difference.
The replay, this is a leg lift, does not get the turn on this one, closure, and then she is able to get two more exposures and that is why she has the 9-1 lead.
>> Tim: If you are joining your coverage via Facebook or YouTube, tell us where you are watching in the comments.
Thank you to all of our viewers tuning in.
Campbell comes right back for the takedown to make it 9-3.
Time to get the wrench, one minute left, on the clock.
Kyle, in men's college, they get every bit out.
If your toe is out in women's freestyle , it is a push out.
>> Kyle: you have the step out, it does not take much.
The out of bounds rule is different.
After a certain amount of time they will bring them back to their feet.
In that short time, 35 seconds left in the match, can William Penn pull out another victory here ?
Really good job by Vanderwood, very hard to shoot on her, but she has not two-on-one, under 20 seconds.
Nice shot, by Vanderwood.
>> Tim: Your best defense is offense.
And JoJo just drops in and it looks like she will secure the big victory, 9-3, three more points on the board for William Penn, one for Grand View, makes the score 11-7.
>> Jim: William Penn, when you look at what they have coming up, their best wrestlers are in the second half of their lineup.
To be able to get that win a 124, that is setting up William Penn nicely for the second half.
>> Jim: Strong athletes in the second half, they are on a roll right now.
>> Tim: Coming up at 131, it is going to be Maya Davis from Chatham, Illinois, Glenwood high school.
And Devin Patton, for William Penn, from Plano, Texas.
She was a state champion at Plano high school, she is a transfer from Wesleyan , where she was an All-American, and she was a defending All-American last year as well.
Looking forward to this match.
See what happens here , with Grandview really needing a win to get back in.
>> Jim: My goodness, Devin Patton, right off the whistle.
Two-point takedown, trying to get that, it looks like she is getting the arm bar tied up, they are wasting no time in any of these .
And I think that Maya Davis hurt her knee a little bit.
I'll not it has not been funded to go through the injuries, but , Devin Patton knows that she can move up, especially against a quality opponent like Devin Patton.
Data 14 really has to take the Matt Stewart and cannot right number two, Davis, stepping up a weight class.
>> Jim: That was big , that big , lateral drop by Maya Davis.
Over two minutes to go.
Plenty of time.
She's got to settle in here.
>> Jim: Coming off the back.
That was a four-point throw.
Beat the back.
>> Referee: Play continues.
>> Jim: Davis , that was tough coming up.
Check this out.
Comes in, but Maya Davis just goes with it and throws that lateral jab.
Cannot she knows her great moves and she is now in the lead, 4-2.
We do not have escape points.
They are not going to let you stay on the mat very long if something is going on.
>> Jim: You don't have the near-fall points, it is all about exposure points.
It is a little different, you'd can lay flat on the MAT.
That is the nuance between old-style and freestyle.
Jim Mack her brother Russell's .
-- Wrestles .
>> Jim: She tried to throw the lateral, and now Patton has her on her back.
She is in trouble.
Got both legs in , lifting up on the head , she has 44 seconds.
>> Tim: Both wrestlers , that is not easy.
Not easy at all.
>> Jim: Especially when she is able to get to the base.
Now she is behind, 6-4.
What fireworks, we saw it at 103.
They go to their feet.
>> Tim: 6-4, Patton in front of Maya Davis.
>> Jim: That is ripple action that we have had, now we have 18 seconds left in the first period.
6 Ivan 4, Devin Patton over Maya Davis at this point.
Devin Patton really got some nice leg attacks.
Here it is, quick.
We are going to get to the break, 6 Ivan 4, 30-second break.
What do you think , Kyle?
You saw that opening takedown from Patton.
Got up 2- 0, a great counter for Maya Davis, looked like she was taking control.
Then you can see, that Patton , getting 24-point throws that we have a 6 Ivan 4 score.
This is going to be fun.
>> Kyle: I think that she felt the lateral drop, she got caught the second time.
Held up , anticipated it coming .
That helped her , the second time.
Both, coming up their back.
In danger of getting pinned.
Really great effort there.
And areas that snatch , this single.
Oh my goodness.
>> Tim: There she goes, Davis, the fall.
And this match has been amazing.
Oh.
Wow.
Five Points on the board, one point for William Penn.
That makes the score 12-12 at intermission.
>> Jim: Amazing match, great first half.
Here we go, a double , and then, that lateral again, Davis, right to her back and finishes it off this time for the fall.
Maya Davis over Devin Patton.
Here we go .
Jake Kadel.
The team scorer , the team scorer right now is 12-11.
We got coach Jake Kadel from William Penn with us.
That was a crazy match, Jake , what did you think?
>> Our girls came out with pretty good fight.
We knew the last girl would be pretty tough.
So, I think , a couple of times, maybe eight out of 10 times, the match ends up in our favor.
We are getting there.
>> Tim: The girls are putting up a show.
What is the message at halftime?
>> We need to stay disciplined.
We cannot wrestle where they want us to wrestle.
Our girls did not stay in those tieups, in the last match, we kind of fell into where that girl wanted to be.
>> Tim: Thanks, Coach, we will be back with intermission.

Tim that we are back at Grandview University, where William Penn and Grand View are in a dogfight in the first half.
I am joined by coach Angelo Crinzi, the head coach at the University.
>> They are fighting.
That is what we talk about, it has been a good duel so far.
>> Tim: I know there is a lot of investment in this, it must be really rewarding, coach, to see that women's wrestling is the fastest growing college sport in America.
>> No, when I started, there were about seven states sanctioned and now it is growing.
I think just about every state has it.
It has come along way.
>> Tim: You wrestled for Nick Mitchell at Grand View, of course, part of the national championship team, that had to have a lot of influence you, as far as how you coached.
>> For sure, just being part of the culture, being in his program, definitely shaped me as a coach, and gave us a blueprint of what to do to be successful.
>> Tim: We could probably spend a seminar on this.
But what is different about coaching women than men?
>> You know what?
I think you need to be there, a lot of coaches are in the MAT, and having conversations with these girls and keeping their minds in the right spot is what the differences.
>> Tim: How important is culture?
>> Culture is everything.
You need a hard workers, people who will put their heads down, be reliable, be consistent, and I think that is kind of like what sets the tone.
But I think that you have to have those people who also step up on the team.
And, you know, shall those correct characteristics that make them successful, so that it passes down to the new girls that are coming into the program.
>> Tim: It is evident at Grand View that there is a culture that is working in football, men's and women's wrestling , we want to thank you for what you are doing at Grand View.
Thank you for joining us.
We will come back to look at the highlights of the first half, after this.

We are now going to take a little look at some of those exciting matches.
And every one was.
It started right at 103 pounds with some tremendous takedowns in MAT wrestling.
>> Jim: This was a four-point take down.
>> Tim: She got the win.
>> Jim: Nice takedown, single leg up.
What happens, that was a scramble .
>> Tim: Coming out with the big fall .
>> Jim: Does not get that one, but here comes the heel.
Another two points.
There is that lateral drop.
Oh my goodness, beautiful job wrestling for the fall.
>> Tim: And here are the results, Zapata defeated Sandoval.
Then Grand View got a win by default.
And then the Olympian, Ogunsanya, defeating Colon with a fall.
Campbell came back and won .
And then Davis, after both of them shared time on either one is back and Grand View got the fall.
We will take another break and be back with women 's college wrestling.

>> That is absolutely perfect.
>> Tim: Back at Grandview University, ready for the next , and we know that we will see another Olympian from William Penn, Esther Kolawole, up against Krista Warren.
And then Davis versus Spurgeon.
And we don't know who will be at 180 and 207, but we will let you know.
We are getting ready for the second half at 138.
And out of Napoleon Ohio, Wyoming seminary, the Fargo All-American, and a world champ, she started at North Central, and now she is at grand view.
>> Jim: She transferred from North Central, part of the 2023 championship team.
In the NCAA Division I , Division II, Division III, they wrestle at the same national tournament for now.
Good news, the NCAA is sanctioning women's wrestling , this is NAIA, they have had a sanctioned championship for a couple of years now.
The big wrestler for William Penn and we have that step out point.
>> Tim: Turner , 17-12, she was an All-American three years ago, redshirt sophomore out of Sacramento, California, Davis high school.
Sixth in 2022.
She is in with a single.
>> Jim: And there is the whizzer.
There will be two points on that exposure.
And there is a 2-1 lead, for Bostelman.
There are two right there.
She is trying to hold on, she gets another two.
And another two.
Might go out of bounds.
>> Tim: If they don't go out of bounds?
Davis, leaving it right there.
And now, 10-1.
Look at how fast it happens.
Bostelman, 1-0, gets the takedown.
Up 10-1, halfway through the period.
She is going to get the tech .
That is a big, big takedown possibly for Kendall Bostelman to score.
She will get the tech.
She gets the dues.
It will be 12-1, it is a tech fall.
Four points for William Penn.
One point for Grand View, because she scored a technical point.
>> Jim: Getting that step up point really helped her team even if you score points and lose, you can help your team.
>> Tim: 15-13, William Penn, back out in front.
They will host Grand View as we head to 145, getting the opportunity to see the other William Penn Olympian, Naida Abdijanovic , and she is going to be wrestling against Krista Warren, out of Vancouver Washington .
A two-time junior college at community college.
Krista Warren, a senior, going up against the normal 138, wrestling up today, no problem there.
Lightning quick .
>> Kyle: Kolawole , looking at the arm bar here.
Yeah, she wrestled in the Paris Olympics, 2024.
>> Jim: Got a bronze medal, she was in the U-23 championships.
Nice shot, take down there.
Leg lace , another one, and here we go, that top pick is getting in there.
>> Tim: Getting that 14 points for William Penn .
Big win for the Statesmen.
>> Jim: Wow that was wild.
And we know Krista Warren ranks sixth .
>> Tim: Kolawole, pound-for-pound the best, her credentials speak for themselves.
A big-time win, for Jake Kadel and his program.
>> Jim: 19-13.
19-13, coming up two 160, returning national champ, Caitlyn Davis, she won last year, transferred in, had her first tournament at the Grand View open.
And I think we are going to see , they are sending out Emmalee Spurgeon.
>> Tim: From Iowa, fourth last year in the state tournament.
She grew up in combat sports , all her life, with a martial arts background.
Tae kwon do is what she did, and she started wrestling in high school.
>> Jim: Let's see what she can do, right off the whistle.
>> Tim: Spurgeon, right away with the step up point, get on the board first.
And Davis , the national champion , getting good defense so far.
you have got to give Spurgeon credit, she is taking the action to the national champ.
That is how you win big matches.
We are looking for the upside, you have to go at them that is what she is doing.
Somebody is going.
Oh.
Oh.
>> Tim: Four points to Spurgeon, 5-0 lead over Davis .
>> Jim: Man, somebody was going, there is no fear, Emmalee Spurgeon , great defense.
And got the big , four-point takedown, this could be a big upset.
>> Tim: Hold right now for Davis.
>> Kyle: she started at Central Methodist, and she is out of Hilton head, South Carolina.
>> Tim: 1:30 left in the first period.
Looking for that throw , it looks like.
Spurgeon, coming back, trying to get the underhook.
>> Jim: Oh, wow.
Nice throw.
But Spurgeon comes back , with the underhook.
Beginning to step outside the line, that is a point , too.
You need to stay within the edge of the MAT, you do not want to get the step out.
>> Kyle: we have not seen any legitimate shot so far from Davis.
Just a takedown gets you back in the match but I think that is crucial, as time winds down in the first period.
Maya Davis has to get on the board.
>> Tim: 30 seconds left, 5-0, Spurgeon, great period .
It went well.
Double underhook, there it is.
>> Jim: Getting fired up , they are pumped up.
>> Tim: Getting behind her, 6-0 lead.
I did not see this coming, this is shocking.
>> Kyle: as we found out , anything can happen.
And it can happen fast.
>> Tim: 6-0 , the lead, as time expires.
Emmalee Spurgeon with the two step up points, and one to finish it with that big four-point throw.
Into the second period, we will see how Caitlyn Davis response.
William Penn out in front, 19-13.
>> Kyle: what a cool story, fourth in state and 155, coming in against the national champions, first full need -- meet , unbelievable.
>> Tim: First women's duel , on Iowa PBS .
Speaking of excitement, relive the excitement, share these moments, visit IowaPBS.
org for the archives of college wrestling meets any time .
>> Kyle: they are giving attention to Davis, if she gets one more, she will be on the activity clock.
So crucial right now for Davis to just get on the board, she has not made any offensive attacks.
She has been passive.
It has been Spurgeon taking the action to Davis.
Davis has to get on the board.
>> Tim: Davis had some good takes but did not follow up with the shot.
There is the throw by .
Now, over and under.
Already off the MAT.
And Davis circles back in.
Tick-tock , tick-tock , as Davis has to get something started.
She loves the approach, out of bounds.
>> Kyle: two points.
>> Jim: Oh, wow!
>> Tim: Davis does snatch the leg , drives out of bounds, she had the leg lace locked up, 6-2, Davis, with 1:30 left, Davis, trying to get the single.
Let's break this down, 6-2, Davis needs two two-point takedown, if she has them, she will end on criteria.
It is on her to push the action.
>> Kyle: has not taken a whole lot of shots.
A single and a throw -by attempt, there it is , there are the two points.
>> Tim: Davis, O man, trying to get something going, but nothing on the edge.
44 seconds left.
Still trying , there is the throw-by, takedown, 6-4, with 45 seconds left in the match.
As Kyle said, the two-point takedown would give her the victory by criteria.
>> Kyle: if she is able to hold on, it would be a criteria win, just because she scored last.
Scoring with two points.
>> Tim: Nice, beautiful.
Two points.
Now, that is a come back.
>> Jim: Look at this , right to her back, that was outstanding .
That was outstanding.
And she had the hand lock .
>> Tim: The reigning national champion , out in front now, Davis, with 11 seconds left.
>> Kyle: Spurgeon needs to score here.
>> Jim: What a match.
Unbelievable .
8-6.
Davis, with the comeback win.
>> Tim: Really great.
For William Penn, wow, what a show that was.
Great job.
Really a lot of hard-fought effort.
And here is the drive, the double bars are active , and Davis took it right to her back, four-point throw.
>> Tim: 22-14 lead white now.
And now, America Lopez for William Penn, Eureka.
And Yarissa Gallo , going up against America Lopez.
>> Jim: Lopez, ranked number nine, two-on-one.
Obviously, William Penn needs a win here.
>> Kyle: you need to win, because you have a great closer at 207 .
The number one -ranked heavyweight.
>> Tim: If they were to win, granted, very much the favorite .
This match is everything for Grand View.
>> Jim: Grand View has certainly got to have it.
If you get close enough with the number one heavyweight, you have a chance.
>> Tim: You are exactly right, Jim.
Coach Kadel is over there at the table saying, we have got to have it this way.
And America Lopez, she was sixth two at Iowa Wesleyan , one of the transfers and the number three recruit out of high school, she is a junior.
Going up against Yarissa Gallo.
The senior .
>> Kyle: here we go, we have a scrap going on here.
William Penn, up on top .
Now, looking for -- got a leg in, nothing doing.
A little over one minute left, first period.
And looking for the gutwrench.
There is the gutwrench, two points.
Anytime you throw them to their back, it is two points, going to try it again, here it goes, another two points.
6-0 now.
And Lopez.
here is the takedown here.
Kind of getting the scramble.
Lopez comes up on top, and then gets the gutwrench for the 6-0 lead.
>> Tim: Less than 30 seconds left in the first period that it can happen so fast.
The headlock tie up.
10 seconds left.
And that one with the chance.
That is called a slip.
>> Kyle: would you make the attempt and you start back up, no points.
And giving them the 30- second break and I tell you what, for William Penn, if they get this win, it absolutely puts it out of reach.
>> Tim: That is where you want to be when you are going up against the number one 207-pounder.
>> Kyle: as we have seen in previous matches, you cannot feel too good, anything is possible, right now, William Penn, certainly in the driver seat.
Going back to that 150, how incredible was Davis, not in the best shape of her life right now.
Just coming in, and she comes in with a big time duel, getting the comeback win, that is special, that is a national championship mentality.
She comes back, and she scored eight unanswered, gets the big four-point throw out of bounds and that is why William Penn has this lead.
>> Tim: Grand View has established themselves as the perennial program right near the top.
And but what Jake Kadel is doing with William Penn is really special.
>> Jim: Making a hard charge , Grand View got second at the national duels , William Penn did not have its best lineup but with the addition of the Olympians , and you have Caitlyn Davis in the lineup, they are making a surge.
It is really showing right now against the number-two team in the nation.
>> Kyle: another slip, that is another headlock.
>> Jim: That is another difference .
If you attempt a throw in international wrestling, they like attempt.
It is not as much about control as execution and style.
>> Kyle: the only thing we have not seen is a five-point bomb.
Everything else, I think we have seen tonight.
>> Jim: You are right.
That was a nice shot.
And Lopez drags her out of bounds.
>> Tim: One lawyer -- more point, 7-0.
>> Jim: Nice come back, with Gallo with a nice single.
Lopez tries to lift Gallo.
Has a chance, picks up the single.
Nice takedown .
>> Kyle: oh my goodness.
>> Jim: Might come up with a headlock.
She needs a headlock.
>> Tim: That was the reversal.
You are not the only one going oh Wu .
>> Jim: Trying that gutwrench again , nothing doing yet and she scored in that first period with the gutwrench.
>> Kyle: they are not holding back, no fear in any one of these ladies.
Nice shot again, foul it up.
Gallo, no single.
Missed on that.
>> Tim: Good effort by Gallo.
>> Kyle: there is a takedown.
>> Jim: 8-4 right now, with one minute to go in the match.
Trying to get the leg lace.
We have seen how easy that can go.
50 -- 56 seconds, maybe Gallo with a little more momentum here.
That led to the takedown for Gallo.
50 seconds left.
8-4, Lopez, but Yarissa Gallo gains a little momentum here.
>> Tim: It is on Gallo, she has got to push the pace.
She is the one behind.
Nice job I Lopez, getting close to the edge, two-on-one.
Pushes her out, no.
Nice takedown, Gallo with a last-ditch effort down to the ground and Lopez scored.
Probably sealed the deal for the William Penn wrestler and for the team, 10-4, 15 seconds left.
>> Kyle: Lopez is ranked number nine in the nation, doing her job here.
10-4.
It looks like it is going to end like this.
There it is.
>> Tim: A great win for the first time in history, of this series, William Penn seals the deal , 25-15 , they go up with one weight class left.
An historic win for William Penn.
>> Kyle: now, at 207 , Phoebe Burt and Olivia Brown, the number one -ranked athlete in NAIA.
>> Tim: Out of Iowa city West, Phoebe Burt , also a thrower, she set the school record in the discus, and she is on the track and field team, going up against Olivia Brown from broken arrow, Oklahoma, the four-time All-American in high school.
She broke her ankle in a four wheeler accident and has been working her way back.
>> Kyle: in 2024 , and 2023, ranked number one.
I am sure her goal is to win it all, that is the first takedown for Olivia Brown, 2 -0.
>> Tim: Brown had a huge win against Isaac, and Savannah Isaac had looked good and dominated in that match.
So, expect the takedown from Olivia Brown, she is special.
Redshirt junior .
>> Kyle: she really likes that two-on-one.
Does it again here.
This crowd loves it, man, they have come out to support.
>> Tim: Olivia with another takedown.
Another takedown.
, good effort by Phoebe Burt.
>> Kyle: good headlock , she likes it.
She is good here.
Going around again.
There is the firm takedown.
This time, she is really on the beaten path here.
Phoebe Burt, not going over, but it is 6-0.
>> Tim: A little past the halfway mark of the first period.
With Coach Crinzi looking on at the number one -ranked wrestler.
Brown, undefeated last year, fifth the year before ad 191.
>> Jim: Done a great job with the takedown game.
But Brown, controlling the center, controlling that two-on-one, owning the MAT.
It looks like she will get another unforced takedown.
>> Tim: She will go up 8-0 in this match, two more points and a turn to end this.
>> Referee: Play continues.
>> Tim: Bringing them back to their feet, with seconds to go in the first period.
>> Kyle: one more takedown will end it, for Olivia Brown.
>> Jim: Vicious on that two-on-one .
>> Kyle: that puts the pressure down.
>> Tim: Going to try to finish it right here.
She gets the two and that is the tech fall, the score is 19 for Grand View, but 25 points for William Penn .
Their first-ever victory over Grand View, coming into the series.
Now it is 4-1 , with Grand View and William Penn , the number two and three-ranked teams in the nation.
Here is one of the five takedowns by Brown, the number one-ranked wrestler in the nation .
Proves her ranking.
>> Kyle: just controls everything in that match, does not fall behind.
She will be gearing up for the NAIA championship in March.
>> Tim: Final score, William Penn 25, Grand View 19.
Guys, that was some exciting wrestling.
>> Jim: That was fun, that was really fun.
These girls let it go.
>> Tim: Our next sports broadcast is these --the girls state basketball championship in March.
